1…2…3…4… Each step taken was meticulously counted as the young man approached the infirmary. 5. Well, that’s good. One hundred and fifty-five steps from my rooms to here. He let out a sigh of relief that he had been holding the entire walk. After all, if it hadn’t added up right, he would have…well, he wouldn’t need to worry about that now, seeing as things had worked out quite nicely after all.
Nervously, he reached out to open the door to the infirmary, wincing at the loud creak that emitted from little-used hinges. Clearly this room had been untouched for a while which boded both ill and well for the healer. On the bright side, the event of something missing was quite low, seeing as no one had been meddling around in here, sticking their nose where it didn’t belong. On the down side, many tonics, roots and herbs had more-than-likely gone bad, been eaten, or evaporated away into nothing. And seeing as there was an unfortunate lack of hands around, he would need to do much of the collecting of things himself.
“Well…let’s see, shall we?” He murmured, stepping inside. 1. The place looked fairly clean. They would need to replace the glows in the baskets, for the room was quite dim. He would need to make a mental note of the. Another step. 2. The place was dusty, upon further examination. It would need a thorough dusting at some point, he wasn’t sure when.
A step toward the first cabinet. 3. He swung open the doors, letting out a rather feminine shriek as a rather large creature flew out at him, angry at being disrupted. It quickly disappeared, probably off to look for some other, safer haven. Holden stood there, waiting for his heart beat to settle. He had jumped back in the process. 4. Apparently, this would need more fixing up than he had originally expected. Oh well, no matter. He could do it.

((I hope you don't mind me intruding. )) “Slow down Seiryuth!” The fael dragonet flicking ahead of her rider slowed down to a steady walk and waited for the woman to catch up. The dragonet snorted loudly and wrapped her long tail around her riders ankle when she decided to walk next to the woman. Raevn smiled softly, “there, now that’s not too hard is it?” She asked her dragon as she walked down the hall with her fingers running lightly on the cold and rough wall. She still didn’t know the Weyr in its entirety, and she was looking forward to learning the halls with her dragon by her side. But this is slow! I can’t wait ‘till we fly, then I can show you how fast I can move. Seiryuth said to hers, moaning at it because she couldn’t chase it without losing hers in the hall. Oohhh, who’s in there? The fael dragonet led her rider to the right into a room that felt old and unused to Raevn. The woman paused as she heard movement and stayed by the door, unsure of what was in the room. It’s a person! Oh, talk to him, please? You need to talk more.Reavn looked down at the pulsing light she saw as her dragon, what do you mean I need to talk more? I talk more than you do. Raevn said, resisting her dragon pulling her forward by leaning against the door frame. Liar! Seiryuth said loudly as she made a noise somewhere between a bellow and a bugle to get the man’s attention directed over to her rider.

((Not at all. ^^ Holden would love company))
While mildly surprised to find that he was no longer alone, the young man was not nearly so startled as he had been when he opened the cabinet. Still, the rather loud sound that erupted from the hatchling was still rather shocking considering he had been imagining a much larger creature than the dragon that stood there. It’s –her?- rider stood leaning against the door frame, clearly looking unwilling to be here.
“Ah…well, hello there,” he stammered, reaching up with one hand to run fingers through shaggy locks and scratch at the back of his neck out of awkwardness. Uncomfortably, he shifted from side to side, not quite sure what to say to them. Just how did one speak to a dragon? Should he at all? “I don’t suppose that this would be your room that I’m looking through. No, of course not. Silly of me. It is, after all, rather unused.” He was babbling.
Realizing precisely what his new position as the weyrhealer entailed, he suddenly straightened, taking on a more authoritative role. After all, perhaps she had come searching for him specifically and needed his help. Not that there was much he could do in the way of medicines at the moment. Everything was sadly understocked or simply not there at all.
“Can I help you with anything? A remedy? Healing salve possibly?” After the words were said, he realized that it was probably quite foolish of him to have said that. Neither looked in the least bit ill. In fact, they were the epitome of health, aside from a blindfold wrapped around the young woman’s eyes. Was she blind then? Well, hopefully she wasn’t expecting him to have a cure.
She must have thought him completely incompetent by this point. First going on and on about something or other, and then assuming that she was here for some sort of injury. Most probably didn’t know who he was and what he did and there had hardly been time enough for someone to get hurt.
“Let me try all of that again. I’m Holden, the very recently appointed resident Weyrhealer, available for all your healing needs. I’m also very pleased to make your acquaintance.” He addressed both of them, still unsure of how to treat the dragon. Letting out a deep breath, he relaxed. Finally, he seemed to have gotten it right.

Raevn’s lips curved into a soft smile at a small encouragement from her dragon. She flipped her long white hair over her shoulder easily and felt the air in the room run across her skin; there was a draft somewhere. The dragon however turned back to look at her rider and jerked lightly with her tail on the woman’s ankle again, she needed to talk! “Uh, Seiryuth. She was exploring, and she came in here.” Raevn said as a short explanation to why she and her dragonet were in the … the infirmary? Oh, that was luck! “I’m Raevn.” She offered in response to the man giving his own name, he didn’t seem to be too awkward with her blindness; he was more distressed at having Seiryuth there apparently. Tell him I am not some wild creature and can understand him like you can. He can talk to me normally. Seiryuth said to hers as she lightly unwrapped her tail from the woman’s ankle and decided to trot to the other end of the room to poke around in some more shelves. Raevn shook her head lightly, silly little beast. But non the less, she relayed the message to Holden with a small tone of amusement, though she wasn’t attempting to embarrass him any more if she already had. “But, Weyrhealer?” She asked, her curiosity getting the better of her for once; that blasted dragon was loosing her tongue on purpose! “What did you study before you came here?”

"Well then, Reavn, Seiryuth, it is a pleasure to meet the both of you." He smiled a crooked grin, feeling the unease in the room lighten. Or maybe that was just him. Either way, he was feeling much more comfortable at this point, and he hoped that she was as well. "Well, come in, come in. The place is a bit musty. Hasn't been used in Faranth knows how long, but the chairs still work fine. I'd be a horrible host not to make you as comfortable as possible."
So saying, he took a step toward the table in the center of the room and pulled out a chair for her. 5. Suddenly realizing his dilemma, he sighed and shuffled five mini-steps over toward the other chair before plopping down into it. There, mission accomplished. Hopefully she wouldn't find him too horribly odd for his behavior.
After hearing Seiryuth's response, told through Reavn, he watched the hatchling with curiousity as she explored the room. When she came upon a few cabinets that had yet to be unopened, he felt compelled to give a warning.
"Be careful with those shelves there. Some sort of nasty looking creature likes to make them it's home. It's a rather scary thing too." Hopefully the one he found was the last of them, for he didn't think that he could stand anymore surprises like he one he had suffered from earlier.
"Before I arrived here, I was a simply son of a holder who happened to be friends with the healer. He taught me most of what I know, though I have been experimenting a bit with different herbs and plants. What of yourself?" Surely there had to be an interesting story behind this young woman.

Raevn heard the chairs move as Holden pulled them out. She followed the noise slowly, hesitantly; somewhat afraid that she might run into something that was in her way. Her fingers found the back of the chair first, and then ran down to the seat so she could figure out where to place her backside. After reassuring herself that the chair was going to cave under her, Raevn sat easily and folded her hands in her lap lightly. The woman’s keen ears had heard him shuffle those five steps, and she wondered briefly on it, but put it aside to be a question or comment for later. Seiryuth snorted at Holdens’ warning, I am much more scarier, and faster. She said through Raevn, the mentioned woman smiling at her dragons comment. Raevn thought on the inquiry into her past. She often didn’t tell much of it, to any one. The only human that had gotten close enough to her to allow her to openly speak to him was a friend who had known her for turns. Though, she hadn’t had Seiryuth at the time, and the fael dragon was constantly prodding her to start talking more and make friends. “I was taken to a harper hall when I was 7, and grew under their teachings. Then I went over to the Healer hall and learned from the Master Healer what he knew. I would travel between the two constantly, but now it is not so easy.” She said, her small gesture taking in the exploring fael who had opened the cabinet doors to a lot of spiders and had crawled in after swatting the bugs away with her long tail.

"Ah! So you know a bit about healing as well! I was afraid that I'd be the only one here. But now that I've got someone else who knows some things, the work won't nearly be so bad. And we can exchange information," he went on excitedly, truly happy to see that he would not be alone in this foray into the medicine involving dragons. And, since she was a dragonrider herself, if Seiryuth would be willing, perhaps they could test remedies on her.
Speaking of the hatchling, he eyed her with amusement. She certainly seemed to be doing a good job of cleaning out the cabinets and shelves for him. Well, that was good for it meant that there would be one less thing for him to do. He was fascinated by her, the way she moved, they way her body worked. How he would love to study the workings of the dragon body more closely.
"Say, you wouldn't happen to know if any unhatched eggs were left on the sands after your hatching? It may sound gruesome, but if I could get my hands on the corpse of a dragon, it might further my studies on the way their bodies work so that I can help them better. And perhaps I could discover why the hatchlings died in the egg so precautions could be made to prevent something like that from happening again." He did hope that she wouldn't think him crazy, babbling on like this, but he didn't want to frighten her away with his talk of dissecting dragons and the like. He hoped she would understand.

Another small smile tilted Raevn’s lips with amusement. The way Holden went on about what they both might know, and what the other might not know and how they could help each other sounded like a plan to her. Though she was still a little hesitant about being so close to another human, but wasn’t that usually just because people were normally weird about her being blind? Yes. That was it, her blindness. That always had people stepping on each others toes as they tried to make her comfortable. She was just fine without their help! Wow mine, you really don’t like that do you? Seiryuth asked as she listened to her riders’ thoughts. I don’t. Raevn replied curtly, her mood gone slightly sour by the idea of every one in the weyr trying to tend to her. Well, this boy won’t do that. Can’t you see he’s talking to you normally? The fael dragonet pointed out, finally bored of chasing the spiders and wandering back over to the two humans. She looked up at the counter they were sitting at and leapt up with feline grace onto the top and then settled down with her tail wrapped around her hind legs and her head resting on her front forearms. Her content blue whirling eyes were focused on Holden as he spoke. The man mentioned dissecting the eggs and Raevn was immediately interested in what he was looking for. She glanced at her dragonet and noticed that she was content with them talking of this too. Despite the fact that the eggs held her once clutch siblings; she wanted the humans to be able to care for her kind as best as they could. “There were two.” Raevn told Holden, her blindfold hiding her bright silver eyes as she looked at where the man’s voice was coming from. “I think Lylian was actually looking for you to examine them as well. She said something about having them sent to…the infirmary. Here, I think. I don’t know when though.” Raevn relayed, using most of the words the Weyrwoman had when she had had her Aeselyth relay the message throughout the Weyrlings. Oh! Tell him he can look at me until the eggs get here! Seiryuth said excitedly standing up and flairing her wings proudly as Raevn relayed the message with a soft smile.

“Two? Why, that is simply wonderful! I do hope they arrive here soon. It’ll give us more time to study them before they begin to go bad.” For some reason, Holden felt completely at ease with this young woman. Perhaps because she was imperfect, just has he was. She in her eyes and he in his brain. They were quite the pair, two defective healers. He only hoped that he could help others where he couldn’t help himself.
“Well little one. I might just take you up on that offer,” he said to Seiryuth with a smile. The hatchling was simply adorable in her youthful innocence and seemed to brighten the musty old room that they currently occupied. He did dearly hope that she and Reavn would visit often, for there weren’t many here and he found himself lonely, though he would never admit it.
He reached out to stroke the hatchlings hide gently, amazed at the soft texture of it. “Something so hardy, you would think it would be less delicate. This is absolutely amazing. And those wings, they are actually supposed to support you in the air?” How did that work? While a dragons’ wings were large, there was no conceivable way that they could actually support the massive weight of a dragon on their own. Unless… “Perhaps your bones are hollow, like that of a bird’s. That would lessen the weight and strain on the wings.”
“How long until she can fly, do you know?” Turning back to Reavn, he asked the question. He would have asked the hatchling herself, but he doubted she would know and he didn’t want her trying something absurd that might end up injuring her. If only those eggs would arrive; then they could know so much more.

Seiryuth crooned as Holden stroked her hide and spread her wings as wide as they would go, turning her body so that her wings wouldn’t hit either Holden or her rider. Her neck was arched regally and her knees on her hind and front legs bent just slightly as she modeled for Holden on the high counter. Raevn watched the pulsing light that was her dragon. She still didn’t understand what she was seeing, only that every dragon she had seen so far had the same light in her world of black. “Her hide is actually rather delicate.” Raevn corrected the male examining her dragon. “It has already needed to be oiled once, and I’m assuming it will be again in a little bit by the feel of it.” She said, rubbing her bare arm lightly as if it were itchy and peeling. “But flight?” The Fael Weyrling reached up and ran her fingers lightly on the membrane of her dragon’s wing, then pinched it lightly between her fingers. “She’s already trying to jump off the ground and gliding; but no success yet. I think…I think that they will start flying around one turn, maybe less than that. But I can’t be sure.” She said, biting her lower lip for a moment as she thought and then laughing softly as Seiryuth pushed her head into her rider’s palm. Someone is coming! Seiryuth said excitedly, leaping off of the edge of the counter and managing to hold a careful glide for a moment before she fell to the floor with a surprised squeal. “Seir! Be careful!” Raevn said worriedly as she saw her dragonet roll and clamber up. I am careful. The dragonet replied as she trotted out into the hall and bugled to someone coming her way. It’s the eggs! “The eggs are here.” Raevn told Holden as she stood and straightened her robes as two men came into the Infirmary laboring under the weight of two lost eggs. They both murmured a small ‘hello’ and then set the eggs on two stands on the counter the fael dragonet had just left. They then quickly made their way out of the Infirmary and down the hall again, probably to do more chores set by Lylian for their punishment. “Hey, Holden. You don’t mind if I help, do you?” Raevn asked, facing the male as she spoke to him, she really didn’t know what she could do, but she wasn’t exactly squeamish, and she did want to learn more about dragons as well.

"The eggs? Wonderful!" He grinned brightly as the men brought in the eggs, watching carefully to make certain that not even the slightest damage should happen to them. As soon as the men left, he stood, taking an oddly circular path that ensured that he reached the counter five steps later. Wondrously, he stroked the shells, noting the firmness of them and the cold that had settled in, now that they had been removed from the warmth of the sands and nothing lived inside.
"Mind? Not at all! In fact, I would love the help and company," he replied, turning to face her and smiling happily, though it was futile due to the slight problem that Reavn couldn't see it. Still, the emotion was conveyed in his words. Eyes alighting upon the dragon, who would no doubt wish to help as well, he came up with a solution.
"Seiryuth, if you could be so kind as to search those drawers for some tools that we will need. I'm not sure which drawer they will be in, so just keep looking until you find something." Hopefully that would keep the hatchling busy, happy and out of the way of he and Reavn. While she might not mean any harm, an accidental swing of the tail, or an overzealous jump could send the eggs crashing down on the stony floor, rendering the specimens completely useless.
"We'll also need paper and some ink..." he muttered, fully intending to make sketches of the dragons' anatomy, both musculature and skeleton.

Seiryuth squealed excitedly and darted to the back of the Infirmary, choosing to start from back there and work her way up. She crouched before the first and lowest drawer, her keen eyes looking at the metal handle and how it was shaped for a human hand. She batted at it lightly with a claw, the unsheathed talons scraping the drawer around the handle with a loud, ear wrenching noise. Sorry. Seiryuth said to both her rider and Holden; she’d decided the male was worthy enough to hear her voice. He had actually gotten her rider to truly smile and almost enjoy human company! The dragonet tried again, this time using her long tail to grip the handle gently and pull the drawer open. She squealed again as a rat jumped out and running to a corner as it squeaked angrily at her. Seiryuth growled and stalked after it playfully, leaping at it and sliding until she hit the wall when she missed the creature. She watched it dash off with a hurt feeling to her then meandered back to the drawer she’d been first examining. Nothing. Well, there were many more drawers to look in! “Seir, love. Could you go and get paper and ink first?” Raevn asked her dragonet after watching the beast pounce at the rat. She could feel all the emotions running through the Fael, not to mention several other emotions that certainly didn’t belong to either of them… Seiryuth looked up for a moment to ponder where she could find what her rider was asking for, and then flickered out of site as she left the room faster than a human eye could follow. Raevn shook her head lightly and tossed her long hair behind her shoulders. “I just don’t get it. She has so much energy after eating, and she hasn’t slept yet. With all of the other dragonets sleeping you’d think that she’d be tired as well… And how fast she moves? Could you see her?” The woman asked Holden after the fael had left, a fond look to her features as she spoke of her dragonet. She thought about how they were going to go about cracking the eggs, and then moved away from the counter slowly to another counter on the wall. She found a handle and pulled lightly; her keen ears heard the scattering spiders as they ran from the sudden light. Raevn then dipped her delecate fingers in slowly and found a handle to…something. She pulled it out and felt the other end, and felt the sting of metal slicing her flesh. “Oh!” The woman pulled the knife away from her fingers and stuck the nicked finger into her mouth and sucked on it lightly to stop some of the bleeding. “Found a knife? I think.” She said to Holden, returning to the middle counter and setting the tool down gingerly.

"You have impressed quite an amazing dragon," Holden told her. "The speed with which she moves, absolutely amazing. She is more like a blur at times, than an actual living creature. You are very fortunate." He felt sorry for Reavn and her inability to see Seiryuth with her own eyes, and at the same time very happy that she should get to experience the companionship that she was now. In his eyes, she was so strong for living the way she did, and deserved every moment of happiness she came across. He only hoped that there would not be many sad days ahead of her.
He continued to watch her as she moved about, shocked by the grace with which she walked, though she couldn't see a thing. When she sliced her finger on the knife, he started toward her, but within moments, she had reached him, placing the knife on the counter.
"Let me see you finger," he requested gently. Hopefully it wasn't too bad. If it was a shallow cut, he could clean the wound to keep infection from getting in and wrap a bit of cloth about it to staunch the bleeding. If it were anything worse, well, he'd have to hope that there was thread and a needle around for him to stitch it closed.
All the while, in the back of his mind, he was wondering how to open the eggs. Perhaps the knife, if it were sharp enough, could be used to chip at the shell or better yet, slice it open. If worse came to worse, he could always resort to his fist, but the shells seemed quite thick and would take quite a bit of pounding at before the cracked even the slightest. What an unexpected problem this was proving to be.
"Is it bleeding much?" Holden asked, his attentions focusing completely on Reavn once more.

Raevn hesitated only briefly when Holden had asked to see her finger. She knew she was perfectly capable of tending it herself, but she felt she might as well humor him. Even though she almost liked the idea of someone wanting to tend to her; there hadn’t been too many in her past that would have actually asked such a thing so quickly. And she had had much worse injuries where it took longer for a person to ask to tend to it. “It’s bleeding a bit,” she said as she felt the warmth of blood drip from the wound as she held it forward. It wasn’t too bad, she could tell that, but the extent of the bleeding made her wonder how deep the knife had cut into her skin. Honestly, how could a knife that old still be sharp? It was then that Seiryuth decided to saunter back into the room. She held a pouch wrapped around her thin shoulders that obviously held a notepad and a small ink bottle surrounded by a cloth. Then there was another bag held securely in her mouth that clinked with the sound of metal and bottles. Mine! What happened! Seiryuth asked quickly, her words still heard by both humans as she stopped next to her rider and looking at her hurt finger. She looked critically at Holden, as if he would save the woman’s life if he helped her. It was obvious that in her youth, Seiryuth took injuries seriously, and drastically out of proportion. “It’s just a small nick. I’m not going to die, Seir.” Raevn assured her dragonet, smiling at the creatures frantic worry.

"Don't worry Seiryuth, your rider will be patched up quicker than you can say 'By the first Egg'" Holden told the hatchling reassuringly. "In fact..." he continued, grabbing the knife, cutting a strip of cloth from his tunic and deftly wrapping it around Reavn's finger in one fluid motion, "I pronounce you healed."
He grinned widely at both dragon and rider, not even minding that his new tunic now had a lovely tear in it. The cut had been deep enough to need bandaging but not so deep that it would need stitches. That was, he supposed, a good thing, for she would have invariably ended up with too few or too many, what with his need to have things in multiples of five.
"Well, now that we've gotten that little thing taken care of, I think it's time that we begin, eh?" He rolled up the sleeves of his tunic, grabbed the knife, and tested its sharpness against the strength of the shell. Nothing. Sighing, he used the point to begin digging at the shell, small chips of eggshell flying off.
"Looks like this could take a while. Seiryuth, was your shell this difficult to break out of?" He questioned. Perhaps the hatchling could be of even more use. Her claws certainly had to be sharp, maybe even sharp enough to break the shell that seemed indestructible.
