My son just recently got his diagnosis. It came about after an 8 day illness and he could not get caught up at school. Now that we have this diagnosis I feel like the teachers do not understand what it really means for my son. Are there any guide lines or any protocol for schools with narcoleptic students? Is there any other help?
How do you educate school staff?

educating the educators. it can be difficult as they are often the most stubborn of students, a few others around here have mentioned conferencing with the school staff, sometimes setting up a place for your son to just take a nap in the middle of the day like in the nurses office is helpful. really depends on what you and the doc are able to work out what he will need to stay focused and functioning through the day.
If you do have a meeting with the staff try to bring some sort of basic informational pamphlets from the doctors office. it can be a helpful aid as it provides solid info for them to absorb.
