Name (or Nickname): Kait
Age: 21
RP Experience: ~8 or 9 years.

In Character

Full Name: Marina El-Yavem
Gender: Female
Faction: Worker
Occupation: Laundress
Race: (We are currently accepting only humans)
Age: 23
Allegiance: Apathetic

Appearance: Marina has a smooth-contoured oval face, the features seemingly sculpted with a loose, casual hand. Her nose is straight, if perhaps just a smidge too long. Her dark eyes seem to hint at mischief and happiness. Even if they didn't, her mouth is framed by laugh lines already, despite her young age. Her dark, shoulder length hair has subtle mahogany tones in certain lights.

Despite her rather unimpressive height of 5'4" her form is fit, distinctly female. Her curves are smoothly rounded and just enough padding over the support of her muscle. Her skin tone is surprisingly even, tinted with a sun-kissed glow for the most part. Looking at her, one is hard pressed to guess that she's sick, and the fact that she's careful to never go out when she's caught an infection helps.

History/Background:
Marina wasn't always poor. Or, rather, she wasn't always as poor as she is now. Her father had been successful enough to keep his family comfortable and fed, if not in a luxurious house or in fancy clothes. Simple, that was always how her life was. The middle child, she has one elder brother and one younger. She was the apple of her father's eye, his only daughter and such a cheerful one at that. He had incredibly high hopes for her, taking in consideration her agreeable personality and beauty both. Only the best would do for his beloved Marina.

Her mother taught her everything she needed to know to be a good wife. By the time she was ten she was helping her mother with all the chores, and even doing some on her own while her brothers helped her father.

By the age of nineteen she was betrothed to the son of a merchant of far better means than her own family. Unfortunately her betrothal was cancelled when she was twenty and fell ill. The mages informed them that it was a disease of the blood, that they weren't sure what exactly was wrong with her but the outlook wasn't positive. Not wanting his son to be a widower, the other family dropped the betrothal immediately.

Her father, determined to find a way to cure his daughter, has paid mages what money they did have, an attempt to cure her. When they couldn't, it became a matter of controlling this disease she had. But three years of spending money they could hardly afford to lose took it's toll. Her mother fell ill, and as much as Marina wants to help care for her mother, she isn't permitted near her, for fear what her mother has would infect her as well.

And then...the war came. As if enough grief had not hit her family, both her father and elder brother were drafted into the military. Marina has taken a job as a laundress, visiting her brother and father whenever she can, and working her hardest to keep their spirits up.

Now, without the funds to keep paying mages to help her stave off the disease, it's uncertain how long she'll live.

Personality:
Marina is the kind of girl that most people just cannot hate. She's bright, cheerful, and innocent. It's hard to find her in a sour mood, and even rarer to see her angry. Intelligent, her intellect unfortunately spreads only to street smart. While she can certainly recognize the letters, she has issues putting them together when they're on paper. Unable to read or write anything beyond her name, she doesn't let that get her down. She's an observer, excellent at listening to those around her. This also means she's excellent at empathizing with others. Sometimes too good, and can at times get wrapped up in the problems of others.

But she's not cheerful all the time. There are times where she'll be moody and depressed. She'll be withdrawn and tends to snap at those who prod too much. During these times she's more likely to seek time on her own, whether it be walking or sitting at home knitting or sewing. Her favorite place, however, has always been the park, watching small children play, even during these dangerous times.

She's really just a loyal, gentle sort of young woman, working to keep her optimism despite it all. She's all too aware of her situation, the hopelessness of it. Perhaps it's because of the hopelessness that she has her defiant, stubborn optimism.

Other: Marina is terminally ill with a disease of the blood. The mages have yet to be able to cure her, instead her family relies entirely on putting off the disease, staving it off for a few more months, or years. After three years, both Marina and her family have learned to take what time they can get.

Scenario 1:
"Well, how's Marina today?" The guard asked with a grin as he kneeled to her level, offering her a candy. A sweet old man, she had fast come to consider him a grandfather of a sort, as she didn't have one of her own.

"I'm okay. Daddy let me help in the field!" Marina told the old man happily, beaming up at him.

"Did he now? Exciting day. Explains all the dirt on your knees then." Standing up, he grinned at her father. "She's going to be a pretty thing one of these days. Makes me wish I were forty years younger." He joked with a wink. "Go on, your wife is going to get scared I finally made good on my word to kidnap your daughter."

This time Marina was alone, save for her thirteen year old brother and their horse. She was laden with what vegetables they had managed to grow and harvest. It was harder now without her father and brother around to help, but they were managing alright.

There were no teases as they got to and then past the guards. No offers of candies nor joking remarks of kidnapping her or wishing they were forty years younger. That guard was long since passed away. The guards now let her pass by with a bored look, and Marina hardly acknowledged them.
