Title: Some covers for an audition
Description: Maroon 5 + Alicia Keys + Norah Jones

Amethist - April 10, 2011 02:29 PM (GMT)
Ok so my twinsister and I wanted to make a cover of "Misery" and "If I ain't got you" together to send in for an audition.

These both covers are just my part of the song, but (just like with the "Letters" cover in the j-pop thread) I really wanted some opinions on this, mainly if it sounds good enough to send in for audition or whether I should re-record it and work on [insert singing flaws].

And between these two, I also was wondering which one sounded better.

Alicia Keys - If I ain't got you (skip to 01:05).

Maroon 5 - Misery

[[update]]

I also recorded "Don't know why", since I thought it would be more suitable for my voice and thus sound better.

Norah Jones - Don't know why

What do you guys think, does this sound better than the other two, or just as good, or maybe even worse?!

I think they both sound pretty good, not sure if I prefer one of them over the other..

You have a very smooth voice. I think you're not using "middle voice" (mix of head and chest voice) enough though. I think if you used middle voice more in your singing, your singing would sound A LOT better. Also I noticed in the Alicia song, you pronounce "th" sounds as "t" sometimes.\

You still sound pretty good though in both of them! :D

Thanks for the feedback! yeah I'm still kinda learning how to use my "middle voice", I also have Singing Success which teaches about it, but I'm still not too far with that program >_<. And oh hmm I didn't notice the "t" sounds, but I'm not a native English speaker so maybe I pronounced it in a Dutch way by accident =x..

Oh, I see, heh. :P Yeah, if you're sending your audition in to a competition or wherever that isn't held by a native English speaker, then maybe the pronunciation isn't that important? ^_^

Hmm maybe, I hope so at least xd..
Btw I just recorded a new cover, maybe this sounds better though I still have difficulty with going from chest to head voice >_<..

Norah Jones cover is good. I think it's your best one out of these three since it seems like it matches your voice and vibrato best. Only thing is at the end of it, a few of the lines were kind of off key. So if you were to fix that, I'd rank these as:

1. Don't Know Why
2. I Ain't Got You
3. Misery

:)

Thanks a lot for your reply!

Erhm you mean the "I don't know why" sentences at the end of the song? Or the end before the long instrumental piece aka the "my heart is drenched in wine, but you'll be on my mind forever"?

Yeah sorry I forgot to mention about the long instrumental part btw, cause that's (again) a part that my twin sister will sing, and all the "I don't know why" parts are sung together that's why I sang it a couple of times at the end.

^ It's at the very end of the song, starting at 2:51, where your "I don't know why but I didn't comes" got off-pitch. That's the only part though, I think, where I noticed that.

Ok thanks, I'm gonna fix that part asap then!

*edit*

Lol I recorded the last part several times, and I ended up with two versions.
version 1
more soulful but maybe not so clear pronunciation?
version 2
better pronunciation but more boring?

Oh well please tell which one you like better!

I think the first one is better. The singing overall just sounds better to me, I think, in that one. :)
