The "viewing area" in the first picture is actually nothing to do with reds at all

You can see diddly squat of the airfield, as Mark rightly says, it is actually an area to take in the view across the valley
Also, it is reputed that the "viewing area" is used for some dodgy goings on after the hours of darkness, so best avoided as the sun is going down.
Best thing to do is to park there, & walk up the field to the edge of the fence. Keep off the crops, stick to the side of the field, I think there is a track that runs up to the crash gate. Please respect the farmers land.
With regard to the viewing area in picture 2, this is also pants
Best to park your car in here, & walk up to the crash gate. Base security will generally leave you alone, but WILL ask you to move your vehicle, if you park by the crash gate, & quite rightly too.

Generally, the wind direction will cause the Reds to taxy past this gate, so lots of waves to the guys & gals, next time you are there.

Also, for info, the Reds air to air frequency is 243.450 They use this frequency from the moment they starting transmitting on the ground, so you will hear the Boss asking the team to call in, & asking for permission to taxi. You will also hear the immortal line...
"Reds..rolling...NOW!"
