Since term had started that year, Reta hadnt been up to see her owl once, and she thought it was due time to go spend some time with her. It wasnt like she was lonely up there. There were tons of other owls. She just missed having her near like she did over the summer. So Reta climbed the stairs and made her way over to the window of the owlery, carefully avoiding the splattered owl poop covering the floors as she did, and sat on the ledge, calling her owl down to her. She stared out the window, stroking her pet as she did so.

Lia slowly made her way up the staircase towards the owlery, clutching a letter in her left hand. She had written her parents and her younger sister finally, as she had promised she would do the moment she got to school. Of course, she'd been at school for a while and had already received at least three frantic letters from her mother hoping she had gotten there safe. She figured it was time to write back.

Lia's owl was temperamental and most of the time she didn't mind being away from her. She called her owl Dolce, and she didn't know why. The owl was nothing short of sweet. She contemplated this as she just missed a spot of owl poo on the floor. She hopped to the side, and peered into the owlery, calling her owl's name as she did so. "Dolce?" but paused when she realized that she wasn't alone. "Oh, hello," she said softly, looking down at the floor.

Reta turned as she heard someone call into the owlery. She stopped petting her owl and transferred Keela to her shoulder. She watched the girl until she noticed her, and offered a small wave when she called a hello to her. "Hey." she replied, standing up and brushing straw off of her robes. "I'm Reta Grace." she said. She motioned to her shoulder. "And this is Keela."

"I'm Reta Grace," the girl on the other end of the owlery responded. "And this is Keela," she said motioning to the owl on her shoulder. The girl was blonde, with blue eyes and she seemed nice enough. She was not in Lia's house, but she had seen her around - maybe she was in her year?

"I'm Lia," she responded, taking a step forward towards the girl. She glanced around the owlery, keeping her eyes peeled for Dolce. She proceeded to move closer towards Reta and stuck out her hand to shake hers. "Nice to meet you," she said with a smile. And as the words flew out of her mouth, a ruffle of feathers erupted on the far end of the room and Dolce came to sit on her shoulder.

Jake tripped on the last step.
Shoot...almost made it this time... he thought as he picked himself up and brushed the dirt off.
Every single time, he had tripped on one step or another. He had hit every single one, except for the nineteenth step. For some odd reason, he kept missing it. He'd even gone so far as to try to trip on it...but he always made it.
He wasn't quite expecting any other people anywhere near, let alone one of them to be a complete stranger. Ok...so not complete...but close to it.

"Nice to meet you, too." Reta responded, lifting her hand to shake Lia's. She watched an owl land on the girls shoulders, and reached out a hand to stroke the owl's feathers lightly. "Hey there." she said softly. She looked at Lia. "Whats its name?" she asked.

Reta looked past the girl as someone else entered the owlery. She raised her hand in greeting. "Jake!" she called. "Its been awile, huh?" she said, smiling.

Lia jumped slightly at the fact that Dolce had landed on her shoulder. "What's it's name?" Reta asked her.

"Her name is Dolce. It means 'sweet' in Italian, but she's not always the nicest bird," she said with a chuckle. As she answered her question, she heard Reta call another person's name. She spun around quickly (causing Dolce to dig her claws slightly into her shoulder, then fly away), as she heard another person enter the owlery - a boy, in her house she was quite sure - with light hair and blue eyes.

As Reta called out to him, it was clear that they knew each other and Lia was unsure of what to do, so she simply waved to him. So awkward.

"She seems nice enough to me." Reta replied. She pulled her hand back as the owl flew away, watching her fly away and then transferring Keela to her arm so that she could pet her. She grinned as the girl waved, awkwardly maybe, to Jake. "You know him?" she asked.

"You know him?" Reta asked Lia as she finished her wave. Lia shoved her hands in her pockets. "Well...yeah...I don't really...I mean...we're in the same house," Lia said, stumbling over her words, realizing how awkward she had sounded.

She quickly tried to focus her attention on something else, and realized that Dolce had flew away. She looked around the owlery for her dumb bird, found her and called her over. Dolce gave a hoot and landed on her shoulder once more, sticking out a leg to give Lia an opportunity to tie the letter around her leg.

She turned back towards the two people standing in the owlery, and watched as Dolce took flight throughout one of the windows. "So are you a fourth year as well?" Lia asked, turning towards Reta.

Reta smiled. "Oh." she said. She had assumed since they were in the same house that maybe they knew each other, but then again she didnt know everyone in her house either.
She watched Dolce fly out of the window, letter tied to her leg, and then shook her arm slightly, sending Keela flying back up to he shoulder. "Yea." she replied. "I take it you are, too?" she asked, stating the obvious. She grinned.

"Yup! Ravenclaw..."she said, realizing that Reta must have already known that since she knew Jake. "And how do you two know each other?" she asked, grinning back. It was hard not to like this girl - at least she hadn't backed away at Lia's awkwardness.

"Do you know him..." Jake mumbled to himself while sitting on the top step to dust himself off.
He heard a studdered reply form a somewhat familiar voice. he couldn't place a name or face to the voice, but he was certain he'd heard it from somewhere. But where?
Another riddle for another time. Now...to find the stupid birdbrained rent-an-owl.

Reta watched Jake, who appeared not to even notice the two girls. She shook her head slightly. Maybe he had forgotten her. She turned back to Lia. "We met back in first or second year." she said, coughing slightly to try and get his attention. She smiled at the girl. "So, how are classes?" she asked, making small talk.

As he passed the two he said, "I know you're there Reta. I'm busy at the moment though..."
Within five minutes he had found the bird and caught it. He was going to have to go to the Hospital Wing to get his hand fixed.
Jake attached the letter and sent the owl off. He then walked out and headed to the Hospital Wing.

Lia watched as Jake entered the room quickly, and left just as abruptly. She decided to ignore the awkward moment that she had created.

"So, how are classes?" Reta asked her.

Lia was surprised at her tendency to be friendly to this girl. "Class are alright," she replied with a shrug. "Ya know how classes are." She smiled. "Have you eaten yet?" she asked the girl suddenly.
