Rai stood on the edge of the 25 meter length pool, staring straight down into the deep end, some 4 meters below. How this dare started, she couldn't exactly recall. It had something to do with comparative lung capacity, and some random remark that one of the students was superior to the other. However it started, it had progressed into a rather interesting challenge.

Quickly slipping on the dive goggles, Rai pinched her nose and yawned, clearing her ear drums in preparation. On the maintenance cart beside her sat two fragmentation hand grenades. Dressed solely in her black one-piece PE swimsuit, she cradled one of the hand grenades against her chest, squeezing down on the spoon.

It was a simple enough contest: send two students to the bottom of the pool, each with a training hand grenade. The first person to drop their grenade to swim to the surface loses. Of course, that didn't comfort Rai any, as she looked down at the details of the device in her hands.

"These are dummy rounds, ri-?" she started to ask, before being pushed over the edge into the water.

Standing on the opposite side of Rai was Aoi, only a tiny bit taller then his upperclassmen Aoi's attire was basically the same as Rai's aside from the addition of swim trunks. It wasn't Aoi's choice, but rather the group request from his 'comrades' that Aoi wear them along with the one piece. The task as Aoi understood it was simple enough, hold your breath and stay underwater as long as possible while holding the explosive device, very simple.

Well that was the idea at least, Aoi had never held a grenade underwater before and once the teen's goggles were in places Aoi grabbed the remaining grenade before taking up his own position.

With a firm grip on the grenade and the spoon in particular Aoi waited for a sign to start, only to get it in the form of Rai smacking into the water. Using that, Aoi cannon balled into the pool before the person who pushed Rai in could do the same to Aoi. With a quick glance around Aoi tracked the competition before the teen's head cocked to the side, it didn't seem like she'd jumped in on her own. Never the less the time was on and Aoi stared at Rai given that she was the only indication if he'd fail or succeed.

Rai had two options, since they were not clearly defined by the crowd. She could either release all her air and submerge to the bottom of the pool, or float in a prone position, bobbing in the water with her full lung capacity. The latter seemed the better approach, so she held her full breath, and simply floated, staring down at the bottom of the pool.

She had done this before many times to meet the swim test requirements for the military. If they ever were at sea, and not the vacuum of space (though theoretically, jumping ship was the same in either event) it might pay off. However, she never did do this drill while holding a grenade. As she slowly inspected the device, keeping the rest of her body still, a terrible thought ran through her mind.

The serial numbers engraved on the smooth canister of the fragmentation grenade were authentic. This wasn't a dummy model, drilled hollow and often used in the "Customer Complaints: Please Take a Number" gag signs popular amongst small store owners. This was the real deal.

Of course, the pin was pulled. Since her hair was released from the sock bun, she had no pins to insert into the spoon. This would prove... problematic. It was then she looked over at Aoi, the guy who jumped in to represent the Coordinators. He didn't look like he was going to give up, either.

Only if there was a way to explain these were real...

Aoi lingered half way between the bottom and the surface only for a second or two before physics started to work it's magic and Aoi began to float up. Fighting against that however Aoi stayed semi in control as the teen glanced around to find something to focus on. There wasn't much in the pool aside from the device in Aoi's hands and Rai.

Looking over the grenade, Aoi was fairly certain that it shouldn't be trifled with, although the lack of a safety pit was disheartening should Aoi's hand get tired the teen was relatively sure it'd be fine.

Turning his attention towards Rai, Aoi wondered what the natural was thinking about and made the quick trip towards the girl. Aoi was thus positioned vertically for the moment, but low enough to see the grenade in her hand. With a slight nod, Aoi looked up slightly towards Rai's face with his slightly puffed out cheeks denoting Aoi had made sure to get as much air as possible before jumping in.

In classic Aoi fashion however, the teen stared blankly towards Rai, well as blankly as one could with puffed out cheeks.

Rai stared back at the boy, raising an eyebrow. Slowly, she let out one small air bubble every ten seconds to reduce the strain on her lungs. Over a minute had past, and neither seemed to be giving in. Of course, they each held a live grenade in their hands, which made surrender a death sentence.

That was, until she thought back to her necklace. If they could just guide the necklace through the gap for the arming pin of both grenades, she could try disarming and disassembling the grenades. The aqueous environment would help avoid ignition once the air-tight seal was broken, even with the magnesium-based detonator.

Gripping her grenade in her left hand and her knees, Watanabe slowly unclasped the necklace around her neck. It was a difficult procedure, and her air was quickly running out. However, as she unfastened the necklace and bit the rattlesnake tail between her teeth, the process of feeding the simple metal chain through the hole was nearly impossible.

Finally, holding the spoon and grenade between her knees, Rai was able to feed the chain through the arming pin hole, and holding the chain firmly in place, released the spoon of the grenade.

It held.

Aoi watched Rai go through the rather awkward process with her necklace, which was amusing just to watch. While the teen wasn't entirely sure, it had certainly taken long enough to do. For all her effort, Rai as not able to not worry about the grenade's spoon, which seemed like a reasonable trade off.

Cocking his head to the side slightly Aoi stared at Rai's grenade curious about what she had done to it before holding out his own grenade towards Rai so she could do the same. After all they came as a pair so it should be matching. It just wouldn't sit right with Aoi if the two were different.

Raising an eyebrow, her eyes twitching in understanding as the boy held out the grenade, Rai clamped her hand tightly down on his to hold the spoon in place. As she tried to feed the necklace chain into the arming pin hole, however, their grip must have slipped.

The grenade started to sink towards the bottom of the pool, passing just beyond Rai's grip. Exhaling all her air in surprise, the brunette started towards the surface, hauling at Aoi to move. Water was a more efficient medium for explosions than air, and if they were caught under the surface, the shock to their bodies even at a safe distance from the shrapnel would kill them instantly.

Hauling herself over the side of the pool, she had just enough time to drag Aoi's upper body out of the water as the grenade went off, causing a violent shockwave, and a reverberation through the concrete surrounding the pool.

As a new drain hole depleted the water from the pool slowly, Rai panted for breath, rolling onto her back along the pool deck, looking up at the upper classmen in frustration. "Who's idea was it to use LIVE grenades?"

Aoi watched with mixed interest as Rai tried to redo the process of making the grenades safe. Of course something just had to go wrong as the grenade slipped out of Rai's hand. Aoi's eyes tracked the spoon being sent through the water although the bubbles from Rai's mouth was quick to get Aoi's attention.

The teen didn't get much time to stare however as Rai went into overdrive and hauled Aoi along with her escape. Aoi quickly moved into action as well and began swimming along to not be dead weight. Although by the time they reached the edge Aoi flailed slightly as he was hauled up and grabbed at the ledge to pull himself out completely as the explosion went off.

Out of harms way Aoi slumped down next to Rai, although Aoi was laying face down instead of Rai laying on her back. The position however was uncomfortable for a number of reasons and Aoi eventually rolled over towards Rai, before rubbing at his chest.

The explosion however had not detured Aoi's faithful comrades as a few of them hurried over towards their boss towels in hand, one of which Aoi took to dry off before taking one and laying it on Rai.

Rai sighed as the towel fell loosely over her face. Taking it and wiping herself down gently, she grunted as an MP approached, hauling her to her feet. Instantly there was a ton of shouting, lots of accusations being thrown around, and a rather sheepish Redcoat walking away.

"Hey!" Rai barked. "This bonehead was the one who used live grenades! I didn't know they were the real deal until I was underwater, and then I tried to safely defuse them!"

Frustrated, and quite annoyed, Rai fumbled for one of the grenade pins on the ground, pulling her necklace out and reinserting the pin while her other hand clamped down on the spoon. Once the pin was inserted, Watanabe started to unscrew the grenade, the cylindrical aluminum canister coming apart easily after the gentle persuasion of being rapped rather harshly against the cement.

Pulling apart the grenade slowly, Rai disconnected the pressure release detonator, and handed the various assemblies to the MP. "Now you don't have to call Demolitions."

Aoi watched as while drying off as Rai did her thing with the poor grenade, it was over rather quickly and she'd successfully freed her necklace in the process. Since the teen personally avoided most of the argument and Rai had also provided some new experiences.

Once the grenade was dealt with Aoi walked next to Rai and reached out to pat Rai's shoulder in as much of an approving way as possible. All the while Aoi's entourage of misfits and delinquents trailed after him. "This was fun and you helped me." The deadpan teenager spoke with an equally monotone voice which was hardly deep, although he paused as he seemed to think over something. "If you ever need something just ask me, or one of them." Aoi motioned towards his underlings as he said 'them', which they all bowed their heads as they were mentioned by their boss. It all reeked of a Yakuza mentality, although wasn't exactly a shining example of what a said Yakuza might look like.

Aoi then removed his hand and wrapped the towel around his waist, ignoring the MP's existence for right now, for whatever Rai's answer would be.

Rai nodded politely, smirking slightly. "Well... I could use some influence on the Academy's part to let me carry while on campus... Need more guns."

She watched as the MPs and the remaining students shrank back.

The request to have a gun struck Aoi as odd, although the teen glanced up slightly and scratched his chin in thought as he seemed to contemplate the request. "Open carry or concealed...." Aoi then shifted his gaze to the ground going deeper into thought "Need to talk to people...."

Aoi nodded quickly to confirm things in his head before looking back up at Rai and then just turned to head to the locker room to get changed without a second though. There were too many things going on in Aoi's head, he'd likely need to come back later when he figured things out.

"Open carry, preferably something with plenty of stopping power," Rai specified. "Ideally, though it would be rather difficult to find, a sniper rifle or DMR semi-auto equivalent."

Rai had plenty of ancestors in her line who had been killed in various pre-CE wars, and she was not going to be one of them. The main factor in surviving any war as infantry or any officer on the front lines was to keep your head, be highly-observant of the situation, and always have weapons on you at all times. There was never such a thing as "too much ammo."

Watching the boy start to walk off, carrying himself in a semi-aloof fashion, Rai raised an eyebrow.
