Battlestar Q&A at Wizard World Philly

EJO, Lucci, Nicki and Hogan (June 2009)

With Nicki Clyne, Michael Hogan and Edward J. Olmos in attendance as well, Wizard World invited all BSG actors to come together for a Q&A on Saturday. The panel was hosted by Jim Gibbons, who just described this job as the "greatest nerd moment of my life".

I feel you, Jim. wink.gif

Well, on to the footage: YouTuber Frontis420 uploaded several parts of the panel! Among other things, he recorded Luciana's tale of how she learned of Kat's death back in summer 2006, shortly before shooting "Unfinished Business":

I have heard and read this emotional story many times, yet it doesn't fail to touch me, and I still very much enjoy seeing Luciana literally perform it. Plus, she added one or two bits we haven't heard before, I think: poor "brawny bitch"! laugh.gif And it's cute she half-jokingly asked the producers if they could choose someone else. biggrin.gif

Frontis420's other Q&A vids are interesting, too, of course (though Luciana doesn't answer a question in those parts).

Great videos, thanks for finding them. Especially then panel video.

Yes, I feel the same way. While the impact is even bigger when one is in the same room with her, sitting in the audience, watching this video and seeing her tell this story again is really wonderful and touching. And it looks like Nicki, Michael Hogan and EJO enjoyed it as well. smile.gif

Host Jim Gibbons posted an enthusiastic report on moderating this insightful panel and meeting those four lovely BSG stars:

QUOTE
[They] were extremely friendly and gracious, Olmos particularly so as he thanked me warmly for taking time to host, and I was amazed by how enthused they seemed just to be there since some con guests aren’t always as thrilled to see fans as their fans are to see them.

[...]

At this point, I could spend hours upon hours going into how impressed I was with the insight this cast had into their show and mention numerous reasons why each facet of every answer was a tasty nerd nugget for massive fans of the show like myself.

[...]

The two women of “BSG” on the panel also had to field the first two fan questions, which were not only directed specifically at them but were particularly in-depth and intellectual questions, and their answers proved that both women had done a lot of thinking about this show and their characters and could easily handle replying in relation to overarching themes like feminism.

[...]

At one point, I noticed Olmos had been talking a lot but had no water. He grabbed some water, but not wanting any “BSG” cast member to be without, I grabbed one of the extra bottles I brought, placed it in front of Olmos and he passed it to Carro who needed a fresh water.

Now doesn’t that sound amazing and truly special? What a great bunch of people. Make sure to read the full post on Jim’s blog. And here’s hoping we’ll get to read — or even watch — some of the other answers given by Luciana and Nicki, in particular. I adore that Nicki often addresses the topic of how women were portrayed in BSG, so I'd love to see some of those segments showing up on YouTube.

I read the blog post the day after he made it, it was very interesting. Hopefully more tidbits about this panel will surface, all four of the BSG guests are amongst my favorites.
And it's wonderful to hear they have such a great chemistry together.

Ask, and ye shall receive

Here's a tidbit from ANTiFanboy's panel report

QUOTE
Question to the women about how they saw their characters grow throughout the show:

Cally-”I had to dig deep for some scenes because Cally is such a different person by the end of her time then she was on the beginning. Sometimes I didn’t like her”.

Kat-”I had the opposite effect because my character was kind of a bitch and I wanted her and Starbuck to become friends” .

I don't know... Kara was certainly bitchier Kat, wasn't she? And sometimes people are just not meant to be hugging each other. But I agree the writers should have given Kat another storyline, one that is both positive and about some off-duty activity.

I completely agree, Starbuck was way bitchier than Kat. But like we often said, the conflict between them should have been toned down a bit.

I agree with Lucci (and you two) on this. Starbuck should have learned to respect Kat. But then again Starbuck didn't respect anyone. Its to negative for my taste. But that's RDM's style. rolleyes.gif

Edit: Surprised Nicki did not "like" Cally as much during the last season or two. Ive heard her mention this before. I dunno, compared to all the other characters I thought she wasn't quite as bitchy.

I found another tiny bit of info in a comment written in response to a video showing one of Eddie's answers.

QUOTE
The whole clip is really good, what it doesn't relay is that it was a response to who did you not get to work with that you would have liked to. I cannot recall who Nicki Clyne said. Luciana Carro said Mary McDonnell.

Interesting. Did Luciana mention this before? (I don't remember everything. wink.gif) I wonder what kind of dynamic those two actresses would have had.

To be perfectly honest, however, I wish even more we'd seen her in scenes with Baltar or Cain.

I think she hinted at it once or twice before. And yes, there are quite some characters who I would have loved to interact with Kat.
