Kat in general BSG merchandise

Books, comics, role-playing game etc.

While specific Kat merchandise - like action figures and minimates - shall be discussed in this thread (which is pretty long already), I'd like to have another thread for talks about more general BSG merchandise that just "happens" to feature Kat in one way or the other.

We know she is mentioned in the official role-playing game and in some of the books as well. Perhaps she appears in several issues of Dynamite's ever-expanding line of BSG comics, too.

I hope she appears in the comics.

Kat wasn’t featured much in the books, but a little bit is better than not at all. wink.gif I skimmed through the books again and marked every page in which she appeared, so I will give descriptions of her few "scenes" she appears in with the corresponding page numbers. (Hopefully I will get around to post it this weekend.) I don’t know if Luciana is aware about Kat’s appearance in the books, so I will tell her in a message about it, just in case.

Sagittarius is Bleeding

user posted image

In the novel "Sagittarius is Bleeding" by Peter David Kat is only mentioned twice. First Dualla mentions her on page 41 during a space battle. Kat, along with other pilots reported that the Cylon raiders were deliberately missing the colonial ships. It later turned out the Cylons had found out the emergency jump coordinates, the only intention of the attack was to threaten the fleet enough so it would jump, so the large Cylon fleet waiting at the emergency coordinates could ambush them.

Later, Kat is mentioned on pages 230 and 231. Starbuck has to report to the admiral’s quarters and she thinks it’s because she has been hitting the booze to much. Starbuck wonders how Adama might have found out about it and she considers the possibility that Kat had ratted her out. But since Kat wanted to show she was a better pilot than Starbuck, and she couldn’t do that when Starbuck was grounded, Kara came to the conclusion Kat had nothing to do with it.
The reason Kara was called to Adama’s quarters turned out to be a completely different one, of course.

Unfortunately, that’s all we hear about Kat in this book.

Unity

Steven Harper’s novel "Unity" is the only one in which Kat has something to say.

In the first chapter the Fleet is attacked by a Cylon Basestar. Kat fights, along with the other pilots, to defend the rag tag fugitive fleet. Kat’s name appears on the pages 10, 16, 18 and on page 23 (in the second chapter). She doesn’t say much, just the usual chatter between pilots during the battle, and she shoots down Cylon raiders, of course.

In chapter four she participates in a card game in the pilots’ quarters. Starbuck got a pair of tickets for a concert on Cloud Nine, which is completely sold out. The pilots (and Dualla) play for one of these tickets. Whoever wins gets the ticket (plus a backstage pass) and can accompany Kara to the Cloud Nine, if Starbuck is the winner, she can decide who to take with her to the concert. The conversation between Kat and Starbuck during the game is quite civilised for their standards. wink.gif The card game starts on page 74 and ends on page 79, with – not really a surprise - Starbuck as the winner. She chooses Lee as her companion, while Kat decides to watch the live broadcast of the event together with the others.

In chapter nine Kat participates in a space battle again, trying to defend the fleet against what appears to be a small Cylon attack. The Cylons infected practically the entire fleet with a disease which affects the brain, and the purpose of this small attack with only a few raiders is to determine whether the pilots already show signs of the infection. And Kat and Hotdog do. The disease impairs the areas of the brain which are responsible for language processing first. Kat and Hotdog begin to have difficulties forming proper sentences. On top of that, their ability to pilot the Vipers also decreases. The Cylons jump away when they have confirmation that the disease works as planned. By the time the pilots return to the Galactica, Kat is unable to form any sentence that makes sense, Hot Dog is off even worse, he can’t say any proper word.
Kat appears on pages 138 though 144. These are the last few lines of the chapter:
QUOTE (Unity @ page 144)

"Try not to talk." Kara ducked under one of Kat’s arms while the technician ducked under the other. They lifted Kat partly off her feet, "Let’s get you to sickbay along with Hot Dog."
"Bun in a refrigerator," Kat agreed.

This was the last appearance of Kat in "Unity", she spends the rest of the novel in Sickbay.

There is one more thing worth mentioning in "Unity". A member of a religious cult (who is in no way connected to Kat) is called Louanne. While I of course don’t know how common this name was on the Twelve Colonies, I find it a bit strange that there are two Louannes in the fleet. I wonder if Steven Harper knew Kat’s first name was Louanne when he wrote the novel.

Kat is only featured in these two books; she unfortunately is not in the other novels at all.

Like I said above, I will send Lucci a message Kat and the novels just in case she doesn’t already know.

Frosty, I'm grateful you gave such a comprehensive report on Kat's appearances in licensed BSG novels. kat_paws.gif dancingbunny.gif

Recalling all the pretty negative reviews I've read during the last moments (some of them being nothing but scorchers), I appreciate your sacrifice. wink.gif Hopefully, finding and marking the few Kat referenches/scenes wasn't the only thing that made you finish the books.

Generally, I'm disappointed Kat has such a minor role in all these novels, if at all. However, she probably shares this fate with most of the other minor characters, which in turn may be due to the authors' ignorance towards many of the aspects that make BSG work on the screen in the first place. Tellingly, one of the reviewers called the first novel a poorly rehashed "Star Trek" plot.

With Kat being such an edgy, strong woman with lots of potential for conflict and character-driven drama, I'm surprised not even celebrated genre writer Peter A. David bothered to use Lucci's character. Ah well, looks like we have to stick with fan fic.

I hate to admit it but I don't care to read. Im a totally visual person. (No surprise) So video, art, photography peek my interest a lot more.

Frosty I cannot believe you "suffered" through all those books just to find a few passages featuring Kat! Thats devotion!

I was very upset when the second series of BSG trading cards. (Not sure if they were game cards or trading cards) did not have the signed autograph Kat card as it was promised early on. But I must assume there is a Kat card, no? I never seen the cards so I have no idea if they show scenes from the episodes or if they are just character and hardware cards for gaming.

I used to know of a BSG autograph photo site where you could purchase signed autographs of your favorite BSG stars on a glossy photo. Not sure if it was an "official" site or if its still online. I remember a few Nicki Clyne glossies with Aaron. If its up, I bet theres a Lucci glossy on there too.

Luciana mentioned in Jo Storm's "Frak You"

About a year ago, ECW Press published Frak You, an inofficial companion to the new BSG, written by Jo Storm. She devotes the bulk of her book to recapping and examining all episodes up to season 3.

Weaving in actors' quotes throughout the companion, Storm chose to quote from Luciana's Galactica BS interview, as an introduction to the ep guide on "The Passage":

(Storm acknowledges the source of these quotes at the end of the book.)

Frak! Lucci could have been in 2 or 3 more episodes of BSG and couldn't because it conflicted with Dr. Dolittle?!?!

Now that's sad...... sad.gif

Thanks for finding this, Pedda. Is this your book? Is this a scan of the book and did you mark some words yellow??

@Solium: This interview is - as Pedda said - quite old, there is no new information there. We knew since then that she missed some BSG stuff. Her flying back to Vancouver for one day without having slept much, then shooting "Final Cut" and staying awake with Red Bull made her scenes in "Final Cut" even more realistic... wink.gif

Yeah, that's what I call method acting. wink.gif Her performance in "Final Cut" still ranks among my three favorites.

But no, I don't have that book. That's a screencap of a results page from Amazon's "Search inside the book", with me searching for the marked words.

Well, it's been a long time since this interview and no one can remember everything. Anyway, the interview this book quotes from is also archived here on our board. The post is from December 2006 and she mentions turning down BSG episodes in her answer to question number 19.

The BSG Season 4.0 DVD set was released in North America this week, including "Razor", the season's first ten episodes, more than an hour of cut scenes, and several bones feature. That's the normal edition.

An exclusive special edition of this DVD set is sold in Best Buy stores (not in Best Buy's online, though). This edition features a shiny packaging, a replica of Starbuck's dog tags - and a booklet that mostly consists of short character profiles.

Here's where it gets interesting for Kat fans: Louanne Katraine is mentioned on the page dedicated to the "Colonial Fleet Pilots", recalling the events of "Final Cut" and "The Passage". There could have been more emphasis on her unquestionable leadership, but I'm glad she's remembered. smile.gif

Nice! They could have said something positive about her, but at least they haven't forgotten Kat. And she is the first of the pilots to be mentioned in this little article! smile.gif

Do you know Join the Fight? It's SciFi.com's BSG-themed "social gaming experience". Although it has been around for several months, I have no idea what exactly is going on there.

Anyway, apparently JTF features a "BSG personality quiz", too, and here's the Kat-themed results card:

As always, it's nice to see Kat being featured somewhere. But... "You've always been bad"?? WTF? Seems like someone didn't really watch the show. dry.gif

huh.gif She hasn't always been bad! She had a bad past. I think of her as someone who has always been a good person, but was caught in something bad and then tried to escape when she had the chance. But what they write about her really sounds so negative, what a shame. This character deserves better.

Oh, and I'm glad there are other people besides myself who don't know what exactly this "Join the Fight" is about.

Yeah, ignorants. rolleyes.gif

Speaking of SciFi.com: Each week, the website presents the top five BSG moments, allowing you to vote on your favorite scenes ("Best Battle" etc). This is how they advertise this feature on the BSG site:

Oddly enough, you can vote for this particular scene "Scar" in any of the existing categories... but I fully expect a "Best cat fight" or "Best pilot banter" category in the coming weeks. wink.gif

Kat in the BSG Pen & Paper RPG

There is an officially licensed, pen-and-paper role playing game based on BSG. When I came across an electronic version of the rulebook today, I immediately looked for references to Kat. Indeed, Louanne is among the minor characters described and defined towards the end of the book:

user posted image

That's a surprisingly balanced description of the character, especially when compared to other summaries that made Kat look like she was a notorious, selfish troublemaker. I mean, obviously, she was a sexy notorious, selfish troublemaker.
Just kidding.

The selection of traits and skills, as well as their values, looks reasonable, too. The d8 for "Intimidate" made me laugh. So true. Also, it's interesting one of Kat's three top skills (d10) is being "streetwise" - I'm sure Lucci would be pleased to hear that. laugh.gif

Very nice, this description of her character is indeed better than what they usually print.

Though I'm not really familiar with all these numbers, I only played a role playing game once a long time ago.
