Got my S3 soundtrack today!!! LOVING IT!!! And ESPECIALLY Lucci's very own piece ( ), "Kat's Sacrifice"... I can't help but LOVE that her character has one of the most heroic sounding of anybody else on the show... I'm always overcome in the moment in that episode by her portrayal of Kat's last mission to feel anything but sadness for her, but the music itself really honors her in a spectacular way. The way that it's built on a fairly soft theme that builds in strength and power so perfectly conveys her own heroic journey... AND, I was OVERJOYED that the music used in the last moments of the Passage IS on the soundtrack!!! It's actually from "Admiral and Commander", Adama's suite, but I'll ALWAYS think of Kat when I hear it... And of course, all the other tracks are amazing, too... LOVING getting to relive Kat and the other pilot's finest hour in "Storming New Caprica"!!! THANKS BEAR!!!

I recently witnessed a very special rendition of "Kat's Sacrifice"... How did that happen? It's a looong story About a month ago, the spectacular ballet "Three Faces" premiered at the local theater in Hagen, Germany. The three-part ballet's third part, aptly titled "Prelude to War", features nine sets from Bear McCreary's BSG score. The respective choreography of the dances, however, is not modeled on Battlestar or its story. To assist the orchestra and taiko drummers in preparing for the live performances of his re-arranged music, Bear himself had been in Germany for two weeks. As editors in chief of Caprica City, Lex and I were granted permission to attend a rehearsal, as well as to talk to some theater staff, several days before the premiere. Most importantly, we got to spend some wonderful hours with Bear and his fiancée, Raya Yarbrough, at the theater and in downtown Hagen. (Raya is the woman who sang "Lords of Kobol" in "Pegasus" and the haunting "A Distant Sadness" at the beginning of "Occupation", among other songs.) Let me tell you, those two are wonderful people. As it happens, there was a piano in the room where we did the actual interview, and it proved irresistable for the composer. So he asked Lex and me what cues he should play. "Kat's Sacrifice" was one of the first cues I suggested. He played only a few beats, but believe me, it was gutting nonetheless! You don't forget that. And there was more: When we asked him to describe the music of Caprica (which is apparently very different from the BSG score), he suddenly sat down at the piano and played the main themes! Since we were allowed to record it, he basically gave us a world-exlusive preview. Later that day, Bear and Raya also volunteered to perform an unplugged version of "Lords of Kobol". By the way, the actual premiere was attended by Frosty, Lex, Michael and myself, as well as by dozens of other BSG fans from Germany and all over Europe. Everybody loved the ballet, and many of us stayed for the aftershow party where Bear and Raya chatted with all the fans, posed for pictures, and signed countless programs and CD covers. What a day! I know people who are going to see the ballet again. And Bear indicated there's a good chance the ballet will come to America! If that works out, I strongly suggest you go see it.

Oh yeah, meeting one of my fave composers, and someone who's so deeply involved with the production of BSG, was very special. There are only very few other moments in my "BSG fandom career" that felt as gratifying and insightful as that day in Hagen.
I also have to credit Bear (and the theater's dance company) with teaching me what a wonderful experience ballet can be. I hadn't been to a ballet in more than a decade, but not that I've seen what a marvelous form of art it can be, I'll probably go see another one this year.

He thinks so, too. Which is one of the reasons why most of the ballet's sets were from the first half of season four. I don't know if you heard the news already, but this time, he's gonna release a double-album. Btw, in case anyone is interested and hasn't done so yet, you may read the interview that Lex and I did. Bear talks about BSG and Caprica, as well as the ballet and other projects.
