Title: Strikes in the industry
Description: WGA in 2007/2008. SAG in 2008/2009?

Writers Strike:

The Guild membership authorized a general strike at 7PM yesterday evening....

I am sure they have very good reasons and Lucci went on public record to say she supported the strike, but it also means there will be no productions for her to audition for.

That makes me very sad. :(

FrostyJG - November 2, 2007 10:39 PM (GMT)
It makes me very sad, too. I hope the strike doesn’t last very long, but these disputes are not solved overnight. In Germany, the train drivers strike is going on for months, and there is no compromise in sight. As someone who uses the train every day, I’ve spent hours waiting at the stations during the last few weeks. If the writer’s guild’s negotiations are as slow as they are here in Germany, the strike might last for a while. It’s really sad, I want to see Luciana act again. Well, at least there is Snowglobe to look forward to.

Ron Moore’s wife Terry mad some comments about it in
this thread on skiffy.

hm as lucci said at utopia for some reasons its good that they strike... i also think that it could be good for the actors, but in a selfish way i hope it won't take to long to ends the strikes.

Frosty your experience with the train strike demonstrates the "hidden" damage done in any strike. So many innocent parties end up without jobs and the public at large, lives are disrupted. A lot more in your case with public transit than entertainment but it all still applies.

As an artist I can understand other artists wanting to profit from their "works" in the form of royalties. At the same time, I am a "work for hire" artist and have been for every company I ever worked for. I do not,nor can I ever fight for royalties.

I am not siding with the studio's just saying the right to collect royalties seemed to be for a select group of artists and industries only. If you don't make it part of your contract before hand, its gonna be hard to claim royalties later on. Thus I guess the good and bad of working in a field with a union.

Just to put this on topic, I wonder if Lucci gets royalties for the action figure based on her likeness? I think she should, but I wonder if that is under her contract as an actor on Battlestar Galactica?

It’s very unlikely, but we can ask her.

in case of that i'e known from orli shoshan ( a star wars actor who plays shaak ti) and ray park and some other actors that they didn't get there own figures by the company which produced it. they have to buy it on they're on. in case of lucas its just a term which says all names logos are trademark of. same will be for all other movies tv series....

Solium - November 2, 2007 11:35 PM (GMT)
I thought it was standard practice nowadays for actors to get royalties on anything there likeness is used on. The reason I say this is because I know Christopher Reeves, ( a then unknown actor) was given royalties on his likeness as Superman. (That includes action figures, posters, cups, t-shirts, lunch boxes, what ever.)

I am almost sure, but not positive that the original Star Trek cast have similar royalties.

Maybe the studio's have been rolling back royalty rights the last 30 years or its on a contract by contract basis? :scratchin:

Bit these are the main characters, with the secondary characters it’s probably different. Lucci would have deserved to have her name in the credit’s as a regular, like Kandyse or Nicki in the later seasons, or at least as guest star. Instead she was listed in the end credits, the only explanation is they didn’t want to pay her more money and knew she wasn’t in the position to ask for more. So I don’t think they will give her money for the action figure.

Solium - November 3, 2007 12:05 AM (GMT)
I'll ask for her! :D

The only episode Lucci's name was listed as guest star is "Passageway". She was only listed in the end credit in all other earlier episodes. :(

FrostyJG - November 5, 2007 08:11 PM (GMT)
Yes, it would have been criminal to put her name in the end credits in "The Passage", she was the star of the episode.
I see I'm not the only one who sometimes confuses the titles of the BSG episode "The Passage" and her short film "Passageway". ;)

Count me in!

Ha! I got my Season three soundtrack CD yesterday. Then I saw the music for "The Passage". At once I realized I screwed up the title. Well, as long as everyone is on the same page. :)

Back to the Strike. I feel really sorry for those people whose names are only on the end credits. The longer the strike, the more impact to their income. They are the ones who don't know if they will be on one episode or next. Very unpredictable income source.

The more I read about the reason for the strike, however, the more I support the writers.

FrostyJG - November 6, 2007 04:55 PM (GMT)
Yes, the writers have a good reason for the strike and I hope they will be able to work out a compromise on their terms. But I still hope the strike doesn't last very long.

Michael - November 6, 2007 07:12 PM (GMT)
oh yes... they've got very good reasons... but let's hope for all series junkies that the strike doesn't take to long

Solium - November 6, 2007 11:28 PM (GMT)
Yea, but I'm so sad I am almost in tears. Lucci needs some new gigs so she can entertain the world and pay her bills at the same time. :(

Solium - December 15, 2007 11:31 AM (GMT)
Lucci is very blessed to get a new gig during the writers strike. The latest as of this last Friday is that the studio's completely broke off all talks with the writers.

The writers claims the studio's are breaking union rules and have to make an attempt to negotiate.

Further more the writers want to unionize "animation writers" and I believe "reality show writers".

As of now everything has come to a grinding halt with no end in sight to the strike.

FrostyJG - December 15, 2007 12:07 PM (GMT)
That's what I feared. It really looks like the strike will go on for a long time. I'm glad Lucci has work again, but it's just a movie and after it's finished she has to look for new jobs again, which would be easier if there wasn't a strike. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there is the slightest chance the strike will be over when the movie is finished.

And of course, I want to see the final season of BSG, which has still about half the episodes to film. If the strike goes on for too long, one can't completely rule out that the series will never have a proper ending.

Solium - December 15, 2007 12:21 PM (GMT)
I think Lucci is able to audition because the studio's have a stock pile of scripts, (both television and film) already set for casting. In fact the studio's may even be considering thousands of scripts and pilots they initially turned down because there is nothing new to film.

Its an interesting paradox for the actor. Most actors support the strike, but need to work. While they walk the picket lines with striking writers, they do seem to be taking new projects that have already been written.

With Sci Fi's record I wouldn't be surprised if they never officially end Battlestar Galactica. However I think in this case they will sooner or later. It appears to be a good DVD seller and for that reason alone merits finishing the fourth season.

Oh boy, is it that time of year again? :(

Last Saturday, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the Alliance of Motion Picture Television Producers (AMPTP) and a federal negotiator adjourned their talks about a new contract governing work conditions, benefits and royalties. Once again, new media is, or was, at the heart of the negotiations.

As a result, the union now seeks a strike authorization vote. A strike doesn't seem inevitable at this point, but just like one year ago, my impression is that half the industry has been anticipating another dramatic strike for a long time anyway.

Well, I hope it won't disrupt Luciana's employment opportunities for too long a time.

at a time of historic economic crisis. The tone deafness of SAG is stunning."

Took the words right out of my mouth. It would not be a smart idea to stop productions and put thousands upon thousands of ordinary workers out of a job during this economic disaster we are facing. :(

I am honestly not totally on the actors side on this. They are hired workers and get paid very well. They are not stock holders or part owners of their work.I don't know of any other business where the workers get all these income related perks. When I do artwork for an employer I get paid to do the work. I don't get residuals based upon what the employer dose with the work. In fact other than sports and the music industry I don't know of anyone that gets residuals of any kind for previous works they did.

FrostyJG - November 24, 2008 07:09 PM (GMT)
I largely agree with you, Solium. I don't know what exactly their demands are, but so far I heard only of big star names getting residuals, and they are the ones who are way over-payed anyway. Do they want that generally now, or just higher normal wages?
Ron Moore or someone (his wife?) once mentioned he got residuals for the DVD releases of "Deep Space Nine". Only a few hundred Dollors.
So what would someone like Lucci get from that? Probably as good as nothing, so this would mainly benefit the big name stars who get much more money than there work is worth already.
Hopefully this strike won't impede Luciana's career too much, and hopefully something good for her will come out of that as well.
