Well, some of my favorite quotes:

Revolution, but civilization.

There are some who observe the rules of honor as we observe the stars - from far off. (I understand this is a famous Vic Hugo one)

--------------------
Fergus Lamus,
Attacked by a goose,
Insistently said he was fine.
But his breathing was tainted,
He finally fainted,
And dead he was by the night time.

"The water passed through his shoes and the stars through his soul"--that was the quote that first caught my attention for some reason
"To be free"
"By the big slippers of big slipperdom!" laugh.gif
And of course..."Revolution, but civilisation"

Revolution, but civilization.

The nineteenth century is great, but the twentieth will be happy. may sound sad from the perspective of twenty-first century

Once infected with the idea of liberty, the humanity will inevitably march towards progress, leaving traces of blood and suffering, but still staring with faith into the shining sun of perfection

"Something-or-rather to the matress that subdues the cannon!" winking0001.gif I lurved that quote.

--------------------
Who will wake them? No one ever will...

Too soon, too young to die.
Lamenting, we weep, cry:
Too soon, too young to die.

Someone used to cradle them and kiss them when they cried...

"But...what are you doing here?!" Woman Two exclaimed. "Or are you all Marius in disguise?"

"Glory to the mattress" I think it was.

And that comment about Marius being a man following a man.

That's right! If I ever get one of those boards you can pin quotes on, that is definitely going up. biggrin.gif
Can anyone quote the man-following-a-man part? I've never really seen it before.

These posts are days apart-don't shoot me ninja.gif <--- hiding behind barricade

But I love that quote about Napoleon's and Lamarque's last word:
"While Napoleon died uttering the word 'army', Lamarque died pronouncing the word 'country' "
It gets me somehow...

QUOTE
A few moments later, about three o'clock, Courfeyrac chanced
to be passing along the Rue Mouffetard in company with Bossuet.
The snow had redoubled in violence, and filled the air.  Bossuet was
just saying to Courfeyrac:--
"One would say, to see all these snow-flakes fall, that there
was a plague of white butterflies in heaven."
  All at once,
Bossuet caught sight of Marius coming up the street towards
the barrier with a peculiar air.
"Hold!" said Bossuet.  "There's Marius."
"I saw him," said Courfeyrac.  "Don't let's speak to him."
"Why?"
"He is busy."
"With what?"
"Don't you see his air?"
"What air?"
"He has the air of a man who is following some one."
"That's true," said Bossuet.
"Just see the eyes he is making!" said Courfeyrac.
"But who the deuce is he following?"
"Some fine, flowery bonneted wench!  He's in love."
"But," observed Bossuet, "I don't see any wench nor any flowery
bonnet in the street.  There's not a woman round."
Courfeyrac took a survey, and exclaimed:--
"He's following a man!"
A man, in fact, wearing a gray cap, and whose gray beard could
be distinguished, although they only saw his back, was walking
along about twenty paces in advance of Marius.
This man was dressed in a great-coat which was perfectly new and
too large for him, and in a frightful pair of trousers all hanging
in rags and black with mud.
Bossuet burst out laughing.
"Who is that man?"
"He?" retorted Courfeyrac, "he's a poet.  Poets are very fond of
wearing the trousers of dealers in rabbit skins and the overcoats
of peers of France."
"Let's see where Marius will go," said Bossuet; "let's see where
the man is going, let's follow them, hey?"
"Bossuet!" exclaimed Courfeyrac, "eagle of Meaux!  You are
a prodigious brute.  Follow a man who is following another man, indeed!"

Who Am I?

"Valjean’s baptismal name was Jean, and his mother’s maiden name was Mathieu. It would be quite natural for him, when he came out of prison, to try to conceal his identity by adopting his mother’s name and calling himself Jean Mathieu. He was in Auvergne, where the local accent turns Jean into Chan-Chan Mathieu- and from that it is a very short step to Champmathieu."

I always found that humerous...Javert went out of his way to find an explination for the name change.

"But there are other considerations. To the question, was it possible for Napoleon to win this battle, our answer is, No. Because of Wellington? No. Because of Blucher? No. Because of God."

This is one of my favorite quotes involving Blucher...although I like all quotes involving Blucher. Gebhard Leberecht von Blucher was my great-great-great-*insert accurate number of greats here*-grandfather.

"' Your father. You must promise-Eponine, you must swear to me that you'll never tell him where it is.'
She was gazing at him in astonishment.
'Eponine! How did you know that was my name?'
'Will you promise me?'
She seemed not to hear. 'But it's nice. I'm glad you've called me Eponine.'"

This sounds really dumb, but I reread that part a couple of times and still haven't figured out how he knew her name was Eponine. I'm pretty sure she didn't tell him; is it mentioned in the section when Patron-Minette kidnapped Valjean? Thanks to anyone who can help.

Has no one posted this yet?

"I have just met Marius' new hat and new coat, with Marius inside them. He was
going to pass an examination, no doubt. He looked utterly stupid."
