Well, some of my favorite quotes:
Revolution, but civilization. There are some who observe the rules of honor as we observe the stars - from far off. (I understand this is a famous Vic Hugo one) -------------------- Fergus Lamus,
Attacked by a goose, Insistently said he was fine. But his breathing was tainted, He finally fainted, And dead he was by the night time. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Moderator Alert! |

"The water passed through his shoes and the stars through his soul"--that was the quote that first caught my attention for some reason
"To be free" "By the big slippers of big slipperdom!" And of course..."Revolution, but civilisation" -------------------- "By the big slippers of big slipperdom!"--M. Gillenormand

Revolution, but civilization.
The nineteenth century is great, but the twentieth will be happy. may sound sad from the perspective of twenty-first century -------------------- Once infected with the idea of liberty, the humanity will inevitably march towards progress, leaving traces of blood and suffering, but still staring with faith into the shining sun of perfection

"Something-or-rather to the matress that subdues the cannon!"
I lurved that quote. -------------------- Who will wake them? No one ever will...
Too soon, too young to die. Lamenting, we weep, cry: Too soon, too young to die. Someone used to cradle them and kiss them when they cried... "But...what are you doing here?!" Woman Two exclaimed. "Or are you all Marius in disguise?" |

"Glory to the mattress" I think it was.
And that comment about Marius being a man following a man. -------------------- "By the big slippers of big slipperdom!"--M. Gillenormand

That's right! If I ever get one of those boards you can pin quotes on, that is definitely going up. Can anyone quote the man-following-a-man part? I've never really seen it before. -------------------- Who will wake them? No one ever will...

These posts are days apart-don't shoot me
But I love that quote about Napoleon's and Lamarque's last word: "While Napoleon died uttering the word 'army', Lamarque died pronouncing the word 'country' " It gets me somehow... -------------------- Who will wake them? No one ever will...

"Valjean’s baptismal name was Jean, and his mother’s maiden name was Mathieu. It would be quite natural for him, when he came out of prison, to try to conceal his identity by adopting his mother’s name and calling himself Jean Mathieu. He was in Auvergne, where the local accent turns Jean into Chan-Chan Mathieu- and from that it is a very short step to Champmathieu."
I always found that humerous...Javert went out of his way to find an explination for the name change. "But there are other considerations. To the question, was it possible for Napoleon to win this battle, our answer is, No. Because of Wellington? No. Because of Blucher? No. Because of God." This is one of my favorite quotes involving Blucher...although I like all quotes involving Blucher. Gebhard Leberecht von Blucher was my great-great-great-*insert accurate number of greats here*-grandfather. "' Your father. You must promise-Eponine, you must swear to me that you'll never tell him where it is.' She was gazing at him in astonishment. 'Eponine! How did you know that was my name?' 'Will you promise me?' She seemed not to hear. 'But it's nice. I'm glad you've called me Eponine.'" -------------------- ~The law is inside out, the world is upside down~

This sounds really dumb, but I reread that part a couple of times and still haven't figured out how he knew her name was Eponine. I'm pretty sure she didn't tell him; is it mentioned in the section when Patron-Minette kidnapped Valjean? Thanks to anyone who can help. -------------------- "By the big slippers of big slipperdom!"--M. Gillenormand

"I have just met Marius' new hat and new coat, with Marius inside them. He was going to pass an examination, no doubt. He looked utterly stupid." -------------------- God is behind everything, but everything hides God. Things are black, creatures are opaque. To love a being is to render that being transparent.
