*** Please do not make your character related to any character already established in canon. Meaning, no brother/wife/father of Ash, Flannery, Lance, etc.

About Rivals

What is a rival?

If you've played any of the Pokemon games, you're probably well aware of what a rival is. Typically, he or she is a person that journeys at the same time you do, and although the two of you travel separately, there would be occasions where you run into each other. A pokemon battle would follow and the victor would get bragging rights.

In Kutho Region RPG, your rival is a character that you have full say in creating. The name, gender, personality, and history are all completely up to you, and you submit your rival alongside your actual character when you first sign up. However, your rival doesn't have to be just an enemy trainer that you run into every so often. He or she can have different goals and dreams, such as being a pokemon breeder or an aspiring scientist, and can even be a friend of your character instead of an antagonist. For all intents and purposes, your rival is your second character, the twist being that he or she will be controlled by the mod.

What are the requirements for making a rival?

The rules you use to create your character also apply to making your rival, such as being over eighteen. However, there are additional rules that are fairly obvious, but are worth mentioning:

- Your rival must have some sort of relationship with your character. Be it your character's worst enemy, a creepy stalker, an older brother, or a criminal your character is trying to track down, your rival needs to have some sort of significance. The purpose of the rival is to enhance your journey by having an NPC that can tie into your character's backstory. That can't happen if your rival doesn't know who your character is.

- Your rival cannot be controlled by you. You may be the one to create your rival, but once your journey begins, that rival is controlled by a mod from then on. Make sure you write enough of a personality in your sign-up that the mod can roleplay your rival the way you envision him or her.

- You rival has to have a reason to travel to Kutho. Just like your character, your rival also needs some sort of motivation to come to this region. This can be as simple as wanting to follow your character.

Do I have to have a rival?

No, you don't. If it's impossible for your character to have a rival or having one would somehow conflict with your character's story, then you don't have to submit a rival. Having one is encouraged though, and you will have to give us reason why you don't want one.

If I don't have a rival now, can I get one later?

You certainly can. Ask your mod about it.

Can I have other recurring NPCs in my journey and/or discover new rivals in Kutho?

Yes, though how often you'll find characters like that and how they behave are entirely dependent on your mod. What makes the rival in your sign-up so special is that you have full control over his or her motivations and backstory.

Can I kill my rival?

If you can manage it.

About RP Samples

Your RP sample should cover your character's arrival in Kutho. It's up to you how you want to do this, so long as you adhere to the descriptions of Kutho's different areas and common sense. You also need to make sure that your character somehow manages to do the following:

1. Receive their starting items. All trainers in Kutho start with two potions and a PokéNav. These are given away for free at Kutho's airport and at other points of entry into the region, but your character may already possess them (so long as their existence is somehow acknowledged) or received through some other means.

2. Receive their starting money. If coming from another region, your character might exchange their currency for Kuts; they might receive a monetary gift from their parents; or they might simply draw down their bank account.

If you're stumped for ways to execute your starting scene, you can fall back on having your character arrive at the airport outside of Willow Town. This used to be how everyone was required to start their journey in Kutho, and reviewing the Airport archives should give you plenty of ideas for how your arrival scene might unfold.

The quality of your RP sample determines the amount of money you receive to start your journey with. When a moderator approves your application, they will also let you know how many Kuts you get. Thus, although there is no length requirement for RP samples, it is in your best interest to put in the time and wordcount necessary to showcase your RP ability in its best light.
