Title: In The Name Of Jazz - Take Two
Description: "Excuse me while I scream wordlessly."
Indigo - August 14, 2006 11:01 PM (GMT)
((Back to "In the Name of Jazz", Fleet Town, The Streets
Jazz could sense both irritation and confidence as Nicolai carried him out to Route 4. The trainer's spirits were not dashed as of yet; there were wild pokemon to be found outside of cities, and perhaps a little teamwork would be enough for Jazz to finally learn a new attack.
Meaning, Jazz would be Growling like no tomorrow while Woogie or Boogaloo kept him from passing out due to an attack.
"Here, wild pokemon...
" Nicolai said as he looked around.
Solidify - August 14, 2006 11:10 PM (GMT)
Route 4 was still oddly void of life. The wild pokemon around were:
- A Phanphy frolicking around and flopping its trunk everywhere.
- Two Spearow on the ground, pecking at a carcass.
- Also approaching the carcass was a Charmander.
Indigo - August 15, 2006 12:02 AM (GMT)
Nicolai might have tried to catch the Charmander, but he had enough pokemon to deal with. Also, he was vaguely aware that the whole Charmander evolution line depended on theirs tail flames for something or another, and the idea that the fate of a pokemon depended on keeping a fire going wasn't very appealing at all.
But the Spearows looked good. At least, they looked all right to fight, not capture. Nicolai put Jazz down, called out Boogaloo, and pointed to the Spearows. "Okay, you need to stay with me until Boogaloo takes care of the Spearows first, Jazz," Nicolai explained. "Boogaloo, a Thunder Wave for each Spearow. If the Charmander tries anything, try and Thunder Wave that too."
Solidify - August 15, 2006 12:45 AM (GMT)
The orders were carried out swiftly. The first Spearow went down with ease at the Thunderwave, and the second Spearow only managed to get a few feet into the air when it was paralyzed as well. Both birds dropped to the ground and were flailing their wings, trying to take command of their bodies that were otherwise unmoving.
The Charmander looked up curiously to see what had attacked the Spearow's, and stopped approaching the carcass.
Indigo - August 15, 2006 01:25 AM (GMT)
"Carry on with your corpse examining, we're only here for the birds," Nicolai said to the Charmander. And speaking of... "Boogaloo, Thundershock one of them into oblivion. Jazz, try out your Growls on them, why don't you? Watch out for the Spearows, now."
Solidify - August 15, 2006 01:39 AM (GMT)
The Charmander looked a little hesitant, took a testing step forward to see if it would get shocked, and then made its way slowly over to the carcass.
Nicolai's pokemon nodded. Boogaloo picked one of the Spearow's, and her cheeks cackled with electricity as she discharged a small burst of electricity at the Spearow. The Spearow cawed briefly and jerked slightly upon hitting the ground yet again.
The second Spearow had managed to take control of its body and launched itself into the air, aided by the wind. This was when Jazz decided to growl at them. His growl still wasn't on par with that of Boogaloo's or Woogie's, but it was improving. The Spearow that Boogaloo fried winced at the growl, but the airborne one was in too much of a fury to take heed to the growl as it sped towards Jazz.
It flapped its wings rigidly in an attempt to gain speed, and with the help of the wind, it had a good deal of momentum when it slammed its beak directly into Jazz's head. The Ralts cried out pain and fell back from the blow, a small trickle of blood drizzling from his head where the Spearow's beak had broken the skin.
Boogaloo growled at the Spearow as it soared past, and then began gathering electricity in her cheeks again as she prepared to fire a Thundershock at it. But she waited for Nicolai's order.
Indigo - August 15, 2006 01:48 AM (GMT)
"Right, take it down!" Nicolai told Boogaloo. "And when you're done with that one, take the other Spearow down as well."
He'd winced when Spearow made contact with Jazz's head, but hopefully the two Spearows would pay more attention to the Pikachu actively shooting lightning at them rather than worry about a Growling Ralts.
He hoped Jazz didn't have a conscussion or anything.
Solidify - August 15, 2006 02:01 AM (GMT)
Niether Jazz nor the first Spearow were moving. Not moving much anyway. Jazz clutched his head and seemed to be crying.
Boogaloo ignored him and took all but two seconds to aim before shooting down the second Spearow with a Thundershock. It plummeted to the ground and landed directly on its head with an audible crack. Its feathers were smoking slightly.
Boogaloo finished the other Spearow off with another Thundershock.
The Charmander seemed pleased that its rivals for the carcass had since been removed and hungirly dove into the rotting meat.
Boogaloo has gained 8 EXP. Jazz has gained .5 EXP. (lolz!!!11) Jazz is now at 80 health.
Indigo - August 15, 2006 02:33 AM (GMT)
((Boogaloo: *rolling her eyes at Jazz* STFU n00b, I'm trying to pwn these fools into nubsauce here.))
Nicolai flinched at Jazz and even stepped back for a moment at the sight of him. He was completely bewildered at the possibility that one of his pokemon might actually be crying as a result of battle. Well, there was that baby Abra he'd hunted down, beaten into submission, and inevitably ended up selling, but...
"Nice work Boogaloo. You can take a break now." Nicolai said.
He stared down at Jazz, hesitated, and then knelt down. "...er, there, there. Do you, uh, want a hug or something?" Jazz didn't look all that hurt, and Nicolai really didn't want to waste his Potion on it, so he'd try non-medical alternatives first. A little TLC never hurt...
Solidify - August 15, 2006 02:51 AM (GMT)
Boogaloo snorted and went to roll around in some dirt.
Jazz looked up at Nicolai and sniffled. He seemed to be doing alright now that the Spearow's were taken care of. He nodded and glided up into Nicolai's arms.
Indigo - August 15, 2006 03:20 AM (GMT)
((*staring at Boogaloo* What the hell? I think she's been around Woogie for waaay too long. XD))
Jazz didn't have a concussion, it seemed, and the Potion wasn't wasted.
But Jazz didn't look like he'd learned much about fighting at all. He hurt himself when he tackled a fluffy puppy, cried after one hit in battle, and couldn't even perform the attacks--well, attack--that he did know very well.
... at least his Growl was noticeably improving.
A little disappointed, Nicolai picked up the Ralts. Then, making sure his back was to Boogaloo so she couldn't see, Nicolai hesitantly gave Ralts a quick (but manly, dammit, manly!) hug. Then he turned back around to the prancing Phanpy and, after carefully shifting Jazz to one arm and getting out his PokeDEX, Nicolai pointed the device at the Phanpy to check its level.
Solidify - August 15, 2006 03:35 AM (GMT)
The Ralts seemed to perk up considerably after the... manly hug.
This Phanphy is Male and level 11.
Indigo - August 15, 2006 03:51 AM (GMT)
A little strong... But Woogie might be able to handle it. And if she fainted, Fandango could take it from there. "You're sitting this battle out, Jazz," Nicolai said and put away his PokeDEX.
Out came Woogie. "I want you to breathe Embers at that Phanpy. Try and keep your distance on him and just keep spraying him with fire, okay?"
Solidify - August 15, 2006 04:05 AM (GMT)
The Ralts seemed genuinely relieved it didn't have to battle.
Woogie, on the other hand, seemed delighted that she was getting the chance to battle. Not wasting any time, she breathed an Ember onto the backside of the Phanphy.
With more speed than expected, the Phanphy squeeled and without warning, charged Woogie. Woogie took an involuntary step backwards and only had time to blast a second, shortly lived Ember into the Phanphy's face before the elephant pokemon slammed right into her.
Woogie was tossed backwards and struggled to get to her feet. She shook her head and stared at the Phanphy, who was apparently a more worthy foe than she had first thought.
The Phanphy's thick hide had protected it from most of the pain from the Ember, but its skin was still charred slightly. It trumpeted and then charged forwards again.
Boogaloo stopped rolling around and watched the scene unfold. Ready to spring into action if Nicolai gave the word.
Indigo - August 15, 2006 04:16 AM (GMT)
This was officially a bad idea. And Boogaloo wasn't going to be much help... Or was she?
"Woogie, more Embers!" Not from any kind of attacking standpoint, at least, but Boogaloo might make some kind of distraction... "Boogaloo, try and distract it with a Growl. Or if you can jump on its back and give it hell, that's always another option."
Solidify - August 15, 2006 04:33 AM (GMT)
The Pikachu shot Nicolai a look that said, "Pssh. Yeah right, moron," before finally deciding to growl at the Phanphy.
The Phanphy's attention was suddenly drawn to the Pikachu now growling at it and he abruptly changed course and began charging towards Boogaloo.
Not quite expecting the Phanphy to start attacking her, Boogaloo was caught in slight surprise and was rewarded with her falter by being bashed heavily in the gut by a charging momentum powered Phanphy. She too was hurled backwards as Woogie had been, but her light and more fragile frame didn't stand up to the brunt force nearly as well as Woogie and she was tossed back a good deal further.
The Phanphy trumpeted in victory. But it was a short victory indeed as Woogie wasted no time in blasting another stream of Embers into the Phanphy's backside.
Indigo - August 15, 2006 04:58 AM (GMT)
Nicolai growled in irritation as Boogaloo was sent flying. Fandango would have gone for Phanpy's back and jumped , if only to prove that he could.
So far, it looked like Woogie was just pissing the Phanpy off, not actually hurting him. He considered having Woogie Roar, but... No, it wasn't good to waste time like that. Not when Phanpy was still near full health.
"Don't back down! Keep it up, Woogie!" Nicolai ordered. He mentally added, 'And try to get out of the way next time...'
Solidify - August 15, 2006 05:19 AM (GMT)
((That's because Fandango is cool. *nodnod*))
The Phanphy seemed infuriated now. Completely opposite than the joyous frolicking little Phanphy from before.
It charged at Woogie again, receiving another Ember directly to the face as it did so. A bit blinded by the flames, it shifted its direction slightly.
But this was enough to allow Woogie to dart out of the way of the full charge. She was still smacked right in the face by the Phanphy's flailing well-muscled trunk and yelped in pain. But at least she hadn't been smashed into by the entire package.
It was only now that Boogaloo had managed to wearily get to her feet. She shook her head as if to clear it and sat down.
Indigo - August 15, 2006 05:39 AM (GMT)
Wait, whoa! Something worked?!
"Hey, keep doing that, Woogie!" Nicolai said. "Keep up the Embers, aim for the eyes when he charges you, and do your best to get out of the way!"
Solidify - August 15, 2006 05:51 AM (GMT)
It appeared as if the exact same thing would happen.
The Phanpy charged Woogie again and ended up getting burned in the face, and eyes. And it appeared as though Woogie would be able to completely dodge this tackle.
But then the elephant pokemon's nose twitched and it locked onto the scent of Woogie. It now knew exactly where the Growlithe was.
But still, it didn't have enough time to completely change its direction, and only managed to whack Woogie on her hind legs with its trunk again.
Indigo - August 16, 2006 03:55 AM (GMT)
So far, so good... Kinda. Woogie was taking some abuse out there, but at least she'd taken care of Phanpy's eyes. "Aim your Embers at his trunk and try your best to get out of the way!"
Solidify - August 16, 2006 05:59 AM (GMT)
The Phanpy shook its head and blinked its eyes several times. Suddenly, his head turned in Woogie's direction and the elephant pokemon took off charging again.
Woogie held her ground and blew another stream of Embers into the Phanpy's face. And the Phanpy did the single worst thing it could have possibly done.
It took in a deep breath.
Relying mostly on its nose, the Phanpy inhaled deeply through its trunk to capture Woogie's scent and found itsself inhaling nothing but charred embers. The Phanpy snorted and cried out in pain and halted its charge, taking the time instead to shake its head vigorously as if to clear it.
Indigo - August 17, 2006 04:24 PM (GMT)
"Again! To the trunk and watch for the charge!" Nicolai said.
((...short post. Gyar.))
Solidify - August 17, 2006 06:38 PM (GMT)
The Phanpy had only managed a short trumpet of anger before it was blasted in the face again by the Ember. But this time, it didn't just sit there and take the full force of the flames. As soon as it felt the fire touch its face, it ran to the side to escape and then made a be-line for Woogie.
But the Growlithe had no trouble shifting its head and aiming so that the Phanpy was running directly into the blast of Embers.
Overwhelmed by the constant onslaught of the ember assault, the Phanpy's legs caught each other and the elephant pokemon crashed to the ground, its momentum carrying it right into Woogie as well.
Although it wasn't a properly executed tackle, it still hurt being bashed into by a falling elephant pokemon and Woogie yelped as she was knocked over as well.
The Phanpy continued to roll past her until it finally came to a halt. It lay on the ground and let out a hurt trumpet.
Indigo - August 18, 2006 12:08 AM (GMT)
"Atta' girl, Woogie!" Nicolai cheered. "You've just about won it! Pour on those Embers while it's down!"
'And don't faint. Pretty please don't faint,' Nicolai thought. If a trainer's willpower was enough to give a pokemon strength, Woogie would be able to fly and use Hyper Beam right about now.
Solidify - August 18, 2006 12:25 AM (GMT)
Woogie made it to her feet before the Phanpy. In fact, the Phanpy had only managed to position one of its back legs into a standing position before Woogie pelted it some more with a continuous burst of fire.
The Phanpy squealed in agony as the flames licked over its burned skin. When Woogie paused to take a breath, the Phanpy could be seen bravely trying to stand to its feet. But it was soon knocked down again when Woogie resumed her Ember, scorching the Phanpy's now tender skin.
As the second wave of embers ceased, Woogie could be seen panting and the Phanpy was laying on its side, just barely clinging to consciousness.
Indigo - August 18, 2006 12:48 AM (GMT)
"Just a little more Ember, Woogie, and it'll all be over! The faster you faint it, the quicker you can take a break!" Nicolai said.
Solidify - August 18, 2006 01:09 AM (GMT)
After a few more pants, Woogie mustered up one last Ember that ended the Phanpy, who gave out a pained squeal as it fainted.
Woogie has gained 6 EXP. Woogie is at 70 Health. Boogaloo is at 85 Health. Jazz became overwhelmed from the violence and fainted.
Woogie is now at level 11 (0/15).
((Notes: When a pokemon has an uneven level, I round it up. That okay? So a level 7 Pikachu would yeild 4 EXP. and a level 15 Hoothoot would yeild 8 EXP. And Jazz didn't really faint. I know, my sense of humor sucks.))
Indigo - August 18, 2006 01:47 AM (GMT)
((The round up thing is fine. As for Jazz... XD But a more serious question: it's all fine and good that he only has one non-damaging attack and is a bit fragile, as that's part of the Ralts package. But he can't use his one attack well at all, cries when he's hit, and also hates fighting?
I understand he must be a young Ralts and therefore fearful and addicted to positive thoughts because of it, and so he must work to master his Growl and get used to battling. But um, do you intend to have Jazz suck this much even if he does manage to learn Confusion, or will he start to mature the tiniest little bit? ^^; ))
Hot damn. Woogie beat the thing by herself! Nicolai knelt, placed Jazz down for a moment, and immediately called Woogie over for the mandatory belly rub. After distributing the heartfelt congratulations all around (and giving Boogaloo an apologetic ear scratch, which she accepted well enough), Nicolai thanked his two strongest pokemon one last time and then glanced around to see if anything had shown up besides the Charmander.
Actually... Hey, he could catch and sell that lizard for some easy cash and get Jazz to a restaurant, couldn't he?
His search for new pokemon also included checking to see if the Charmander was still there.
Solidify - August 18, 2006 01:56 AM (GMT)
((Of course he's going to mature. I actually thought it'd be fun to narrate out how he changes over time. And when I said he gained .5 EXP. I was semi-serious. Two growls to an EXP. And he'll be a lot better once he learns confusion.
A Jazz with Confusion = A Jazz with more confidence. Wee.))
The Charmander was still there, and was now eagerly digging into the rotting meat. There was only one new arrival to Route 4, and that was of a Rhyhorn that had appeared off the side of the road and was sniffing the ground.
Indigo - August 18, 2006 02:18 AM (GMT)
((Yeah, seeing Jazz mature over time is a cool idea. Shame on me for worrying that he was going to be a wuss forever. HELMET POWAH! *has Nicolai and Jazz pose together with their mighty helmets*))
He'd just glanced at the Rhyhorn when the image of Joy getting smashed by that Rhydon flashed back into Nicolai's mind. Although Nicolai remained calm looking, Jazz suddenly recoiled as he felt brief, sudden spike of horror that had gone through the trainer.
The emotion was gone as quickly as it had arrived. It was replaced with a much more pleasant image of Seedots and hamburgers. "Oh..." Nicolai grinned down at Jazz sheepishly and gave him a very, very light and playful nudge. "Hey, cheer up! Sorry about all that."
While reaching for his PokeDEX and pointing it at the Charmander, Nicolai realized he'd have to put a better lock on his own semi-repressed memories for the Ralts' sake.
Solidify - August 18, 2006 02:29 AM (GMT)
((Jazz has fainted from the nudge. [/lame]))
This Charmander is Male and level 12.
Indigo - August 18, 2006 02:40 AM (GMT)
Nicolai nodded approvingly at the Charmander.
'Hey man, sorry for screwing up your meal, but...'
"Woogie got her fight in, so Boogaloo, this one's yours. Thunder Wave it and Thundershock it. You know the drill."
Solidify - August 18, 2006 02:59 AM (GMT)
The Pikachu nodded and bounded over so it was in range with the Charmander.
The Charmander had looked up in Nicolai's direction when the Pokedex started speaking, and when it saw Boogaloo briefly charge up, and then launch a Thunderwave at it, it dove to the side to avoid it. It let out an angry snarl and wound up getting shocked by Boogaloo's Thundershock.
Recovering quickly, the Charmander blasted out an Ember of its own. Boogaloo managed to avoid the full force of the attack with a lunge to the side, but she was still singed slightly.
The Charmander hissed and then started running towards Boogaloo.
Indigo - August 18, 2006 05:13 AM (GMT)
Blast. That could've gone better.
"Try another Thunder Wave, quickly!" Nicolai said. "The goal here is paralysis first, then the Thundershock!"
Solidify - August 18, 2006 05:26 AM (GMT)
Boogaloo nodded and let loose another Thunderwave that hit the Charmander dead-on.
The running lizard flinched slightly but didn't stop running towards Boogaloo. Although its rigidness was apparent, the Charmander managed to follow through with a sort of diving tackle. Boogaloo was hit square in the face and cried out in pain as she fell backwards. The Charmander wasted little time in pouncing on the Pikachu and punching her in the jaw. The Charmander stayed on the attack and began rapidly, and quite viciously scratching at Boogaloo's face. The constant assault made it difficult for Boogaloo to counter attack, but eventually she landed a weak Thundershock that drove the Charmander off.
But it didn't stay back for long. Shaking its head from the jolt, the Charmander charged back in towards Boogaloo, who now had several nasty scratch marks on her face that were bleeding.
Indigo - August 18, 2006 05:35 AM (GMT)
"Crap. Woogie. Bite it repeatedly." Nicolai automatically said. His pokemon had just taken down a Phanpy. He'd be damned if they couldn't take on a paralyzed Charmander that was one level higher.
Even if it appeared to be the Charmander from Hell.
Solidify - August 18, 2006 05:49 AM (GMT)
((Get ready for some Matrix action...))
The Charmander abruptly stopped its charge and wheeled around to face Woogie, who had begun dashing towards it. Woogie leaped out to bite the Charmander, but the Charmander had ducked. Or rather, it seemed to fall backwards. Either way, Woogie's jaws snapped onto nothing but air as she landed behind the Charmander.
She spun around and attempted to bite him again but the Charmander foiled her attempts once more with a sharp open handed slap a cross her face. The Charmander's claws dug into Woogie's face and she yelped in pain as one claw came dangerously close to one of her eyes.
But Woogie pressed through the pain, eager to impress Nicolai, and chomped down onto the Charmanders arm, which made the fire lizard cry out. It seemed about to slash Woogie across the face with its other hand, but its body suddenly jerked once before ceasing to move all together as Boogaloo's paralysis took its hold.
Taking advantage of this, Woogie dug her teeth deeper into the Charmanders arm, shaking her head viciously every now and then to re-establish her grip and to cause more pain to the Charmander, who was trying to take command over his body.
Boogaloo seemed relieved to be able to take a short breather and was pawing at her face.
Indigo - August 19, 2006 12:29 AM (GMT)
...that Charmander had just bitchslapped his dog!
Suddenly Nicolai didn't feel so bad about interrupting the Charmander's meal. "Good girl! Knock him down and keep Biting!" Nicolai said. "No mercy!"
This Charmander was good. Disturbingly good. And it was getting annoying.
Solidify - August 19, 2006 02:18 AM (GMT)
Woogie shook her head again, making the Charmander fall to its knees, without releasing her grip on his arm. She dug her fangs deeper and blood was now gushing out from the wound and over her mouth.
The Charmander cried out in pain and suddenly found itself in control over its body again. Whipping its hand around, it scratched Woogie in the back of the neck, digging its small but very sharp claws into her flesh.
Woogie instinctively released his arm but then pounced on him and prepared to bite down on his neck. But the Charmander was one step ahead of her and as Woogie bent down to bite his neck, the Charmander blew an Ember directly in her face from point blank range.
Under normal circumstances, Woogie would have been hardly damaged by the Ember at all, but now, her face and eyes took the brunt of the blow and she reared back, yowling and pawing frantically at her eyes.
The Charmander didn't rush in to attack her though. The damage done to its arm had served its purpose and the Charmander stood and cradled its arm, which was still bleeding heavily.
((Charmander of freakin' powah!))
