There will be times in the RPG when you may need to send out your pokemon to fight. After each fight, your pokemon will usually gain experience points (EXP) and lose health.

Health

Health is always displayed as a percentage. During battles, the player will not know exactly how much health is lost per round, but the moderator will let the player know if the pokemon was hit especially hard or if the pokemon is getting weak. Only at the conclusion of the battle will the moderator actually state the pokemon's health. Health can be recovered with items (such as Potions), recovery moves (such as Absorb), or by letting your pokemon rest. Keep in mind that resting won't ever fully restore a Pokemon's health, and the more your pokemon rest, the more health they will recover.

Critical Hits

Critical Hits basically take place depending on where the move hits the opponent. For instance, say your Pikachu uses quick attack on a Charmander. If Pikachu hits Charmander in the gut, it will obviously wind it or do more damage than if it was hit in the hand. Also, assuming a pokemon gets hit hard in the leg, it will find it difficult to walk around, making it an easier target.

Restaurants
Throughout Kutho, you will find restaurants. These various establishments vary in price, but the more expensive ones are better. If you go to eat in one of these restaurants, your pokemon gain some experience points. The amount of points they gain change depending on the quality of the restaurant.

Experience Points and Leveling Up

Pokemon level up and grow stronger by getting experience points (EXP). To get to the next level, pokemon need:

Levels 1-5: 5 EXP
Levels 6-10: 10 EXP
Levels 11-15: 15 EXP
Levels 16-20: 20 EXP
etc.

You can get a pokemon EXP by training it*, letting it eat at a restaurant, or by battling it against other pokemon. Battling is the most common and fastest way to gain EXP. If your pokemon wins a fight, it automatically receives EXP equal to the opponent's level.

Example: Your pokemon has defeated a wild Lv. 10 Mareep. Your pokemon gains +10 EXP.

You can even battle other members, done by temporarily joining up threads and then initiating a battle. Doing this gives you EXP equal to the opponent's level multiplied by 1.5.

Example: Your pokemon has defeated another player's Lv. 10 Mareep. Your pokemon receives +10 EXP plus an additional 1.5x multiplier (10 * 1.5 = 15 EXP). Total EXP Gain is 15 EXP.

Special opponents, such evolved pokemon, give an EXP bonus. To find out what the EXP bonuses are, please scroll down to the next post. All gained EXP is announced by the mod after the battle has ended.

* Training includes practicing various maneuvres with your pokemon. E.g. Sprinting, shoot flames, shooting water, aiming, etc. Requires adequate role playing detail.

Order of Turns

The battle systems are turn-based and work like this:

Wild Battle

Member: Orders pokemon.*
Moderator: Wild pokemon attacks and damage is calculated.
Member: Orders pokemon.

Trainer Battle

Moderator: Issues orders for enemy pokemon.
Member: Orders pokemon.
Moderator: Calculates damage.
Member: Orders pokemon.

Member vs. Member Battle

Member 1: Orders Pokemon
Member 2: Orders Pokemon
Moderator: Calculates damage.
Member 2: Orders Pokemon
Member 1: Orders Pokemon
Moderator: Calculates damage.

You are allowed to give your pokemon a maximum of three different orders when it is your turn. Any more than that, and your pokemon won't be able to follow in such a stressful situation like battling.

* In this game, no one is allowed to post in a pokemon's battle movements except for the moderator. No one except the moderator can decide if a pokemon's move hits or misses, or if the move defeats the other pokemon. That is considered godmodding, and is therefore not allowed. Trainers may only tell pokemon what to do.

Winning Battles

If you win a battle, the opponent is required to give you any money wagered on the fight. If more than one of your pokemon fights, all of the pokemon who participate in the battle receive EXP--even if they faint--as long as you win the battle.

Losing Battles

Do not feel disheartened if you lose a battle and run out of pokemon to use. If you lose in a trainer battle, you are required to give up any money that you wagered on the battle, (unless you can get away from the person before they can catch you or something.) If your pokemon manages to faint something, however, it can still receive EXP (see EXP Bonus - Losing).

EXP Bonuses

Along with the standard EXP gain from winning battles, pokemon can also receive bonuses for defeating special opponents. When your pokemon defeats an evolved pokemon, a trained pokemon, a gym leader's pokemon, or another player's pokemon, the EXP gain will increase like so:

Evolved Pokemon
For defeating a pokemon that has evolved once (Vigoroth, Furret), your pokemon will receive an EXP bonus equal to 20% of the opponent's level cut in half.

Example: Your pokemon has defeated a wild Lv. 30 Nuzleaf. Your pokemon receives +30 EXP (standard reward) and the evolution bonus (.20 * 15 = +3 EXP). Total EXP Gain is +33 EXP.

For defeating a pokemon that has evolved twice (Venusaur, Slaking), your pokemon will receive an EXP bonus equal to 20% of the opponent's level.

Example: Your pokemon has defeated a wild Lv. 30 Shiftry. Your pokemon receives +30 EXP (standard reward) plus the evolution bonus (.20 * 30 = +6 EXP). Total EXP gain is +36 EXP.

-----------------

Trained Pokemon
For defeating a trained pokemon Lv. 20 or under, your pokemon will receive an EXP bonus of +2. Every ten levels this bonus will increase by one, so defeating a Lv. 30 trained pokemon gives a +3 EXP bonus, defeating a Lv. 40 pokemon gives a +4 EXP bonus, and so on.

Example: Your pokemon has defeated a trained Lv. 30 Shiftry. Your pokemon receives +30 EXP (standard reward), the evolution bonus (.20 * 30 = +6 EXP), and the trained bonus (+3 EXP). Total EXP gain is +39 EXP.

-----------------

Gym Leader's Pokemon
For defeating the first gym leader's pokemon, your pokemon will receive +2 EXP. For defeating the second gym leader's pokemon, your pokemon will receive +3 EXP. The third gym leader gives +4 EXP, and so on all the way to the eighth and final gym leader, who has a bonus of +9 EXP.

Example: Your pokemon has defeated a gym leader's trained Lv. 30 Shiftry. Your pokemon receives +30 EXP (standard reward), the evolution bonus (.20 * 30 = +6 EXP), the trained bonus (+3 EXP), and the fourth gym leader bonus (+5 EXP). Total EXP gain is +44 EXP.

-----------------

Player's Pokemon
For defeating another player's pokemon, your pokemon will receive EXP equal to the 150% of the opponent's level. This bonus overrides the trained pokemon bonus. Evolution bonuses and Gym Leader bonuses (if the opposing player is a Gym Leader) remain, however.

Example: Your pokemon has defeated another player's Lv. 30 Shiftry. Your pokemon receives +30 EXP (standard reward) plus an additional 1.5x multiplier (30 * 1.5 = 45 EXP) and the evolution bonus (.20 * 30 = +6 EXP). Total EXP gain is +51 EXP.

------------------

Impossible Victory
Kutho is not always a safest region to travel in, nor is it always friendly to the novice trainer. There may be situations where your pokemon faces an opponent drastically more powerful in level. Under normal circumstances, this would result in your pokemon losing (or even dying). But if, against all odds, your pokemon manages to eke out a win, it will receive the Impossible Victory bonus.

There is no set number or formula to use for this bonus. The tougher the opponent and the greater the risk, the more the EXP bonus will increase.

This bonus is reserved for truly dangerous situations and opponents, so those players who might intentionally seek out this reward may want to think twice about doing so.

-------------------

Losing
If you are unfortunate enough to lose a pokemon battle, there is a chance you can still get EXP. If your pokemon manages to faint another pokemon before getting KOed itself, and if you lose the battle, your pokemon still gain 2/3 of the EXP it would have gained if you had won the battle.

Example: Your pokemon has defeated another player's Lv. 30 Shiftry, but is fainted later on in the match. You go on to lose that pokemon battle. Your pokemon WOULD have received +51 EXP after all appropriate bonuses are applied, but because you lost the overall battle, your pokemon receives only 2/3 of that total EXP (51 * (2/3)) = 35.3). Total EXP gain is +35 EXP.

Note that if you had actually gone on to win that pokemon battle, no penalties would have been applied and your pokemon would have received the entire +51 EXP, even if it had fainted.

Happy battling, Kuthoers!
