Orville smiled at the prospect. It wasn't quite the same as seeing Ivonette, Leontine, Helen, or Bertha, but it would still be pleasant to see Richard's daughter. From what he'd heard, she sounded like a delight.
He entered the car once more, watching as Richard fastened his seatbelt. This was a feature that Orville hadn't noticed before. Orville followed Richard's lead, but nonetheless grasped the part of the seatbelt that crossed his chest and turned it over in his hands, studying it. He realized how silly it probably looked to Richard, but he couldn't help but be curious! "Automobiles don't have these where...or shall I say, when, I come from." He chuckled, letting the seatbelt go before shaking his head. "Nice idea, though. Sure beats crashing through the front."
Orville nodded when Richard asked if he would hold the pie. "I would be glad to." Richard was busy with driving, after all. Setting the pie on his lap, he let out another chuckle as Richard asked him if he had any more questions. "Chief Warren, if I were to voice all of the questions that I have about this time we'd be here for a week. Let us head out, and if I think of any questions while we're driving, I'll ask them. How does that sound?" He grinned a little. |

The smile on his face widened and he nodded at Orville "Alright, it's set." He said "Let's go see Cat then." His daughter would be ecstatic to see him. If only because he hadn't seen her in what felt like months. He knew there was no excuse for what he was doing but just seeing her made him think about her mother, about how she was growing up without a mom. Little girls shouldn't grow up without their moms. How was he supposed to raise her on his own?
Moving towards his car he unlocked the door and slipped in, setting the pie down so he could unlock the door for Orville and put his seatbelt on.
"Mind holding the pie? Don't want to loose it to the dashboard...the road home can be a bit bumpy." They lived just out of town on one of of the roads that was more dirt and hills then actual road. "The road ahead can get a bit bumpy. Especially in this car." As fancy as the new cop cars were they were built for citys not four wheel drive on dirt roads in a small town.
"So any more questions you want to ask while we're heading out?" |

Orville could not help but be amused as the two of them "snuck" out. He resisted commentary until the two of them reached the outside, and then took a deep breath. "Looks like we made it." He remarked with an amused smile, then looked purposely at the tucked away pie. "And with pie to spare."
The smile fell a tad at Richard's words. While Orville too realized that he would have to go back to the Academy eventually (and had every plan to...where else did he have to go in this time period?), but he wasn't quite sure that he was ready yet. Nevertheless, he wasn't going to put up a fuss if Richard decided to do his job.
The police chief's next words caused Orville's lips (or technically the lips of the man whose body he was inhabiting, but as he was inhabiting the body, those lips were for all intents and purposes his at this particularly point) to turn up into a grin. "My, that is a dilemma, isn't it?" The inventor muttered, playing along. He did note the tinge of pain in the other man's eyes but did not draw attention to it, as he didn't feel it would be right to do so. "Well, I have every intent of returning to the Academy at some point. I don't think a small detour would hurt anyone, especially when there is a delicious pie at stake." Orville wouldn't mind meeting Richard's daughter either. He missed his nieces and nephews almost as much as his adult relatives.

Richard nodded double checking that the pie for his daughter was safely tucked away.He made a somewhat exaggerated gesture for silence as he peeked out of the kitchen at the others gathered in the living room. The owner of the house was busy chatting up one of the local school teachers and so momentarily turned away from them. "Alright, lets slip out before she turns around and catches us." He turned his head back and winked. "I don't want to hear another lecture." Waving for Orville to follow behind he edged around the far end of the living room, past people who were too busy enjoying their food to notice their police chief acting like a child afraid to get scolded.
It was almost enough to make him laugh. If he thought about it too long.
Slipping out the front door he stretched in the sunlight that shined down on him. A soft breeze brushing by, still heavy with the smell of baked goods.
"So Orville. I'm supposed to get you back to the Academy as soon as I find you." Richard had closed his eyes and was taking a moment to enjoy the breeze. "But I have a bit of a dilemma. I have a pie that I'd like to deliver before it gets cold..." he opened his eyes and blinked at the sunlight. "I have a duty to follow orders from the people that bought me this nice car...but my daughter is a citizen of this town and I have a duty to her too. What do you think I should do?" He was smiling, and it was easy but there was just a tinge of pain in his eyes. His daughter tended to do that to him. Even when he was playing around. Truthfully this was the closest he'd been to his old self in ages.
Meeting someone who probably had it worse off then you tended to put things in perspective like that. Plus his daughter would be really upset if he 'd met someone famous and hadn't let her meet them. |

Orville frowned at Richard's words. Overpopulation? Stretched resources? My how the world had changed even in the century that passed between the time Orville was stripped from and this time. It was discussed in Orville's time, mind, but only vaguely, and it certainly wasn't a real worry. It sounded as though, before this so called 'sickness', it was in the 21st century.
"I'd have to agree with that assessment." It was indeed true that you couldn't please everyone, no matter what time period you were from...and the more people there were the harder it was to even try.
Orville let out a small chuckle at Richard's words. "Now I truly am wondering if she's a descendent of Carrie. She tried to stuff me so much that I was afraid I would be too heavy to fly." Fortunately, that proved not to be the case, and Orville was joking anyway, but Orville did notice similarities between the two women. In a good way, though. This little place felt more like home than any other place he'd been in this time, and while Orville wasn't sure how often he would be able to stop out here, he'd probably make the journey as often as he could. That said, Orville finished up his last bit of pie (that didn't meet it's doom against the wall) then nodded. "I think I have to agree with you on that." |

Richard chuckled slightly finding Orville's words a tad ironic. "In his day and age it's a bit of a stretch to find a scientist with faith for anything other then his checkbook." Pushing his plate back he gestured that he'd like some slice of the pie to go then got to his feet. Stretching he yawned, suddenly feeling all the exhaustion from the morning weighing down on him again. There was still a dull ache just behind his eyes and his mouth felt dry and despite the sweet pie and drinks offered. He found himself wanting alcohol again. Didn't really matter what type as long as it numbed the headache and made Rose go away.
"I hope that if he does have faith in you that it's rewarded. We could sure use the help right about now. Then again before all this had started they'd been complaining about overpopulation and stretched resources. Seem you can never please people." He said and smiled despite the somewhat dark humor. Sometimes dark humor was the best humor, especially for someone recovering from a pretty nasty hangover. "I think we were getting close to ten billion people. China seems to spit them out like rabbits...then again they've always had the record for most population." Now they held the record for the most deaths and sickness. "It must be nice living in a time where it's not quite so crowded."
Watching Orville play with the plastic fork. "We should probably go before she comes back into this kitchen and finds you playing with your food" He said returning the others grin with one of his own. "She might make you clean the house from top to bottom...or stuff you so full of pie you can't use your lungs." Gesturing towards the door he picked up his packaged pie "I for one can't take any more pie."

The entire situation was confusing. He liked Richard, the few Clock Crashers that he had met, as well as the few scientists that he'd met. It didn't feel as though he were trapped in a prison or anything. It was just...confusing, and no one seemed able to provide any answers. He had yet to speak to the lead scientist (who he'd heard referred to as Dr. Fields), but surely he, if anyone, had to have the answers that everyone sought, didn't he? Or maybe the simple truth of the matter was that no one had all the answers to what was happening. Sometimes the world worked like that.
"Well...I suppose I should be flattered that whoever is in charge has faith in us." Orville commented, still unsure of what in the world he was supposed to do to find a cure for some deadly epidemic 107 years from the time he hailed from. He was an inventor, not an epidemiologist. "One billion. How many are left? That's most of the population where I come from." That was a haunting thought, and Orville didn't like it at all. He definitely had the idea from Richard's words that the population of the world had grown since 1908, but...one billion people was almost inconceivable.
To try to settle his mind, Orville played around with his plastic fork, twisting it this way and that. He placed a chunk of pie on the end of his fork, bending it back slightly before releasing it, watching as it hit the wall across from them. "S'pose there are added advantages to it's flexibility..." Orville commented with a wry grin, in an attempt to lighten the mood a bit. |

There was a voice in the back of his mind that told him to watch his tongue -it sounded a lot like Rose- but he couldn't really stop once he'd started. Thinking of his wife, of the sickness, and of these people who'd been torn from their times. It caused a lot of feelings to mix inside of him. He should have been careful he guessed, tried to think of what should and shouldn't be said. He had no idea what the scientists were doing or if what he was saying would ruin some experiment they were planning. They had to have kept Orville in the dark for a reason right? Maybe saying all this would mess something up. But then again...they should have anticipated that people in strange places were bound to wander off. Chances were if Orville wasn't meant to know anything they would have kept him and the other escapees on a tighter leash.
No, what he supposed was making him regret his own words was the effect it was having. It was clear they were shocking even somewhat confusing. He could understand that. Personally he had no idea how one of the inventors of airplane could help in a situation like this. What could they possibly know about a disease that had been laying dormant beneath their feet?
Sighing he looked down at his hands. He'd been trying not to get depressed and yet here he was dragging them both down into the dumps. Looking up he flashed a sympathetic look in Orville's direction. "I wish I could answer that question. What I know is from the news, common knowledge. They haven't explained to us how you and the others are supposed to help. Just that they think you can and that we should support this whole thing cause it could save us."
Pushing the remainder of his pie back, having suddenly lost his appetite. "A billion..." including my Rose. "And I suppose it's still growin'." Turning his attention back to Orville he shrugged slightly "You'll have to ask the scientists if you want to know more. My bet is that the head knows whats what. Maybe then you can come back and explain it to me cause I sure as hell don't get it." |

The mention of Richard's Catherine made Orville think of his Katharine. He was trying not to dwell on the family that he left behind, as dwelling would not do him any good, but he could not help it. He'd been ripped away from everything that he knew and loved only to be placed in this strange new world. And to think, he was better off than many of the others. At least he could wrap his head around most of the technology, having used or seen much of it in it's infancy.
Orville didn't like the way Richard started his response, but he opted to reserve judgement until he heard Richard's explanation. The explanation was confusing at first. What did an archeological dig in the midwest have to do with finding a cure? His eyes went wide as Richard finished that tier of the explanation. What other response could Richard expect after telling someone that two states effectively were sucked into a hole in the ground?
Orville was surprised to learn that there was more. "Dropping..." He murmured quietly, noticing the look in Richard's eyes and closing his mouth immediately. Richard's mannerisms, as well as his next words, confirmed that Richard had lost someone to the sickness. The Time Sickness. What an ironic name for a disease that was supposed to be cured by men and women scattered throughout history. Orville suddenly looked contemplative. "How are we supposed to provide the answers? This sounds like some sort of plague, but I am no master at that subject...I don't know how much help a powered flying machine will provide to the cure. I suppose we can deliver it faster?" Orville would have chuckled at this point to lighten the mood, but he couldn't bring himself to do it. Especially at Richard's closing words, which, quite literally, caused Orville to drop his fork with a clang as it hit his place. "One billion?" That was more than half of the world's population in the time Orville hailed from...regardless of how populated the world had originally been in 2015, the impact was clear - and terrifying. |

He chuckled slightly at the fact that his sister shared the same name. Catherine always found it fascinating when someone had the same name as her. "She'd love hearing that. She thinks having the same name automatically makes you sisters." He said shaking his head slightly. "So she'd probably start considering you her brother too." Her daughter had made a point to find all the other girls named any variation of Catherine in town so she could tell them that they were 'related'.
Taking a moment to chew his pie he followed it down with a glass of milk that Mary had set down for him. When he'd swallowed he turned and gave Orville a studied look.
"They really haven't told you guys anything huh?" He said frowning. He could feel his regard for the scientists sinking another peg but ignored it. Chewing on his lip he tried to organize his thoughts into a suitable explanation.
"It started a while back. We were digging in the Midwest, just exploratory at first. No body really knows what they were looking for...but they'd made a big deal out of it." he shrugged and traced a circle on the table "What we didn't know is that the area was unstable. Not long after the digging started there was a cave in and jut like that we lost the area between Colorado and Utah. Half of both states just poof, gone."
He frowned "Of course a lot of people died. But that was nothing....apparently there was something in the crater. Because right after it opened people just started dropping dead. " Here his eyes seem to cloud and he focused his gaze on the pie. "The Time Sickness it's called, it just comes and goes without a warning. She wasn't sick or anything...maybe a little warm. And then she just didn't wake up again. " He sighed "No one can find a cure..."
He swallowed awkwardly "Then someone realized that it had happened before and that's where you guys come in. They're fishing your brains out of history to see if one of you knows whats what. Before we loose any more people. Last time they counted we'd lost a billion maybe more."
