Old Covent Garden market in the 1960s and '70s

The photographer Clive Boursnell took photos of the fruit, vegetable and flower markets found at Old Covent Garden from 1968 until their relocation in 1974. Frequently arriving at the market before 5am and documenting events taking place throughout the working day, Boursnell's photos provide perhaps the most comprehensive collection of images documenting this period in the market's history ...

Photos, article here, Telegraph, 29/06/12.

Excellent pics. It all looked a lot better than the mess that is there today

It's clear that central London used to welcome ordinary Londoners on ordinary budgets. You would be hard pushed to see that today.

As for the Nags Head pub, I know it well. Alas from a slightly later period.

Wonderful photos, a brilliant snapshot of life from the 60's & 70's.
I love the photo of the Nag's Head with the guys drinking tea out of wine glasses. biggrin.gif

I wonder if pubs like the Nags Head had unconventional opening hours. I suspect that they may have opened at about 9am as the market was closing. Hence the tea being served.

I love those 2 flower ladies!

It was probably something to do with that, licensing laws were much stricter than they are now of course. I wouldn't mind betting there was something mixed in with that tea. biggrin.gif

I wonder if that lady with the red hair out of a bottle and all the eye make up has the same look these days? ohmy.gif
