Ironically Jonathan wouldn't have known what to say. Was he supposed to rely on Mark more often if the man came around again? Was he just the proverbial booty-call when the ex-drug dealer went through withdrawals? Jonathan didn't want to think he was just a piece of something he never wanted to be but it was possible. Any acceptance in a world against them would have been better than none. Eventually he knew the truth will out and of course he would have to survive long enough for that to even happen. If nothing developed between them there was no chance of him being anything but hurt, though he could learn to be good at hiding it. If Mark was still around what was stopping Jonathan from making the first move? Oh, that's right he was nervous when it came to men. He already had a hard time talking to Mark without feeling embarrassed and he doubted that was going to change. Given enough time he might have survived the long haul but he wasn't stable in his footing yet. In fact he was sure Mark wasn't going to come back. What had he said about virgins? Was there anything he'd said? Jonathan felt his mind slip a bit into that dark place when he was disheartened or disappointed. It wasn't fair to keep Mark dangling by the skin of his teeth.

Would it ever?

So as Mark went back up the stairs to get ready Jonathan had time to wait by the door, trying to find something to say, anything to say, and coming up with nothing. That is until Mark appeared at the doorway, all packed and ready to go. The detective felt he should have at least checked the other man's stitches to ensure they hadn't come loose and he was going to bleed again. Couldn't the walkers smell that? He really didn't want to think of it that way. Clearing his throat he straightened up as best he could, his smarted leg aching with the effort but making him seem capable of at least some kind of respect. "So when should I expect you back? Might have defenses up by that time and more people if I come across them." He knew he was going to make a wrong turn somewhere in there so he held up a hand, hopefully to stave off whatever protest Mark might have had. "I might be innocent but I'm not stupid. I know what to look for in people. Cop, remember?" A tap to the side of his head and a very awkward chuckle later, he was already feeling like he was killing the mood.

"I can't decide whether to shake your hand goodbye or to give you a kiss." Another joke in there, trying to keep the nervousness from coming out. His hands were shaking might have been beyond that at this point.

So why had he wanted Jonathan to stop him by the front door? This was just going to make the goodbye even harder. Mark had never been in a situation like this before. Forget about the walkers for a moment. He had never spent the night with anyone in the same bed as him, nor had he ever had to say a kind of goodbye like this one to anyone before. Mark was having just as much trouble as Jonathan was, and that was quite troubling to the former drug dealer. Caring for someone else wasn't new to him but caring about someone this much was.

Jonathan's comment about more people, however, gave Mark something to focus on that he knew damn sure how he felt about the matter. He was going to voice all sorts of objections to that one. Other people couldn't always be trusted. Other people meant more mouths to feed. Other people meant more noise and, therefore, more likelihood of attracting walkers to their new found abode. But then Jonathan tried to allay Mark's fears. "You do whatever you think is best," he said, giving a not so ringing endorsement to Jonathan's 'more people' plan. If things got out of hand, then it was no one's fault but Jonathan's.

The detective's first question had remained unanswered so Mark quickly took a mental scan of the Atlanta raiders situation. Merle wanted his revenge on the group that had left him behind to happen sooner rather than later. How soon? Well, that was the question. Mark didn't think it would happen within the next week but he couldn't be sure of anything. The best he could offer Jonathan was, "I should be back within the next four or five days. It all depends on how the others have been getting along without me." They hadn't really talked about the raiders that Mark was with, and Mark wanted to keep it that way for now.

Mark wouldn't admit it out loud but he was nervous too. At least he could hide that nervousness, unlike Jonathan. Mark had already taken something Jonathan had said the wrong way yesterday and that had led to their first kiss. It was time to take a joke the wrong way and act like Jonathan was throwing the choice in Mark's direction. Without thinking twice about it, Mark closed the distance between himself and Jonathan. He wrapped his free hand around the taller man's neck and brought their lips clashing together. It was the fervor of a man who wanted something that he wished he didn't want but couldn't stop himself from getting, nonetheless.

He only broke the kiss off when he needed to take a breath. Mark did just that as he took a step back. "No need to decide anymore," he said with a slight chuckle. Mar knew that trying to pass off that kiss as nothing more than a continuation of Jonathan's joke like that wasn't going to work but joking was a whole hell of a lot easier than trying to have a serious conversation about what everything that had happened the past few days between them meant.

Everything in his past had to deal with either bad memories or none at all. His first real attempt at liking someone had failed because he failed to say anything to them, and he had never really gotten along well with his friends since they all got married and had children. Relationships with women failed, which led him to believe he was gay, and he had just confirmed it via Mark's need for sex. Jonathan knew how men like Mark could be he had come to accept this fact. Now he was starting to realize just how far in the hole he was. If Mark wanted more could he give it to him? If he just wanted to be casual acquaintances could he handle that whenever the ex-drug dealer came around? It was like a bad game of cat and mouse; or a game of cops and robbers. Jonathan wanted to say something to him, anything to make the awkwardness go away, but he was starting to feel like something was going to ruin it if he even tried. Though he didn't have to worry about it for long.

The taste of Mark, the feeling of his lips, it brought everything back; the night before, the day before that. His first kiss from a man, and even how he felt upon seeing a familiar face in the woods. Stalking wasn't a label Jonathan used but if he had no reason to be following the infamous Mark Edelman to the United States it would look increasingly more unappetizing. So he couldn't help himself when Mark's hand was upon his neck, reaching out with one hand on the man's hip and the other slowly ascending to grasp at Mark's shoulder. He was, once again, enjoying it far too much what did long talks do to him? He moved back just as Mark did, perhaps a little disappointed it had to end this way before he cleared his throat. The decision had been made.

Rubbing at the back of his neck Jonathan nodded in response. He wasn't going to voice his concerns just yet. Giving each other a few days to mull over what happened would give him an idea of what they were going to do; where they stood. He wanted to have that time to himself. Meeting new people, helping others, and fortifying his home away from home in the post-apocalyptic shit-hole they were living in seemed a grand and fortuitous idea. "Be careful Mark. You know how the world is. I don't have to tell you twice." There was no doubt in his mind Mark would take care of himself. It was just a matter of if the world would give him the opportunity to defend himself. Jonathan really wanted him to accept the supplies and extra weapon, but what did he know? He would expect the man back but, unfortunately, knew he shouldn't have held his breath.

Being wanted felt so good. The only people in the past who hadn't minded Mark's presence were his parents (who he had left for good when he was sixteen) and his brother Robert. The other people he hung around were generally people who didn't stick around longer than they needed to. They had been afraid of Mark, even though they should have clearly seen that his bark was a lot worse than his bite. He never raised a gun on anyone unless he really needed to, and, even then, he would have never shot anyone. The gun was always just a prop, something to make him look a lot tougher than he actually was.

Maybe if he had told Jonathan all of that earlier the detective wouldn't have been so worried about being stabbed in the back when he least expected it. But Mark didn't think Jonathan would believe it. Maybe in time he could convince the Scot that he was a decent fellow. But there was no way to know how much time was left for either of them. The old phrase 'all of the time in the world' didn't apply in the post-apocalyptic hell they were in. It was either try never to form connections with another human being again or be willing to risk getting to know someone without knowing what every new day was going to bring.

Mark wished he could stick with the former but he was already in too deep with Jonathan. Having sex with him, no big deal; sticking his neck out to help protect him, kind of hard to back away from. Mark offered up a smile. "Don't worry about me," he said, "I'll be back before you know it." With those words said, Mark opened up the front door and stepped outside. A quick look to his left and right showed that as much of the street as he could see was completely deserted. He headed off to the right at a brisk pace, not looking over his shoulder even though he was dying to know if Jonathan was watching him--if Jonathan was going to miss him as much as he was going to miss the detective.

OOC: We can consider this one officially finished! Feel free to PM me with whatever idea(s) you may have in mind for a more recent thread. I will be brainstorming too!
