|Haven Of Wiidom > Sports News > Yankees out of control?|
|Posted by: granobulax Dec 26 2008, 04:48 PM|
| This year, the Yankees have signed three free agents and have invested nearly half a billion dollars in these three players. Yes, I said BILLION. The payroll of the yankees this season will be over 222 million dollars and is almost 100 million more than the next team.
Is this bad or good for baseball?

| I would say it's bad for baseball. The smaller market teams are thrown to the wolves here when they can't afford to keep up with a large market team such as the Yankees.
I think a salary cap is needed in baseball to promote parody in the league.

The yanks have always had a lot of money, and apparently it made baseball more popular during the 1920's, and 30's when they dominated. While the rest of the nation was struggling with the great depression New York was able to draw large crowds, thus making huge sums of money which allowed them to buy off some of the best players in the league.
So I think that its good for baseball. However, your question seems to be, Should the Yankees be spending this much money when we are experiencing a national financial crisis? Well, on one hand you could criticize them for being greedy, but on the other hand you have to realize that MLB is a corporation. I think that this type of money generated by the Yankees because they consistently harvest star players that people want to pay money to see is what the economy needs. The people of America are begging each other to start spending more money to try to get businesses to start a boom which in turn would stop them from making huge job cuts ( 2.4 million jobs lost this year not including December which is estimated to be over 500,000)

|I dont see a pomblemwith what the Yankees are doing. It is within the rules and shows why baseball needs asalary cap.ALso if they lose it shows that money cant buy championships so it works in different ways.|
