Haven Of Wiidom > Members' Zones > Ask a Brit

Posted by: treacherous Apr 23 2009, 01:55 AM
Since we have like 30 Brits on here now. I figure everybody can bug them with questions since most of us are across the pond or whatever expressions those wacky Brits use.

So, without further ado...

Ask a Brit...

WTF does "Chuffed to bits" mean?

Posted by: Marvel Man Apr 23 2009, 02:24 AM
Are you secretely trained to speak with that awsome accent?

Cause I highly doubt it's natural....

Posted by: Granobulax Apr 23 2009, 05:05 AM
Is a "Fag" really concidered a cigarette?

Posted by: L Bison Apr 23 2009, 04:33 PM
No we don't have multiple 'tea times' tea time is an evening meal unless you're posh in which case you may well have time set aside for a cup of tea, lots of people drink it but we don't have specific times.

Chuffed to bits means really pleased or happy.

We have many accents, we don't train to have any of them though, we just have them (or don't in some cases, our area has lost its broad accent now).

Yes a fag is a cigarette.

Anything else?

1: Probably some obscure one I forgot about.

2: Italian. I couldn't even name any German food, but Brits eat pizza.

3: It exists. They don't even debate it in politics.

4: The Brit and the American would tag team if they were politicians. If not, then the Scott wins, because Scotts are bad-ass.

Over-patriotic idiots that see America as the best thing ever and think that their big heroes and run in blindly into danger without thinking, often making things worse. These characters generally tend to die, but are seen as decent people that only wanted to do the right thing.

OR

Americans are seen as fat slobs. They also die a lot.

You're calling us crazy for having a religion over here? Heck, %71 of your population is Christian. And maybe some other branches go overboard. But why can you blame them? The politically-correct human does everything he can to remove God from the picture! For instance, why was Christopher Columbus credited as he first white man to set-foot on American soil. He was not white, he was Hispanic. Leif Erikson was the first white-man to set foot on American soil (in 1,000 A.D.), and was a Christian.
BC, and AD have also been changed. There are also many other things that have been changed to totally remove God from the picture.
The Politically Correct figure is doing 2 times as much as any of those guys

Following on from the British Empire, there are quite a few descendants from different parts of the world in Britain. Hence there are White British, Asian British, African British etc, all mixes from different backgrounds but still British.

To quote a fellow Brit on here earlier... "Meh". The books are OK to read and the films entertaining, but waaaay too much hype! It's not that good!

Funny story about from one of our top comedians who's a fan though.. he was standing in the line waiting to get the new Harry Potter book along with a bunch of other fans. It's about 10PM and the stores are opening at midnight just for the new book.
A drunken homeless guy walks by, stinking of booze and starts shouting in a slurred voice:
"He dies you know! Harry Potter dies!"
He carries on down the line until at one point this kid, can't be more than eight or nine, bravely steps out of the line dressed in his full Potter outfit and waving a toy wand...
..He goes up to the drunk and with a serious look on his face waves the wand and shouts:
"Expelliarmus!"

Brilliant story and apparantly true! What a kid!

Also, to answer a question earlier about taxes... my last one was about 15% of the total. Harsh....

Never seen it, but will try and watch it online sometime soon. They're showing an American show now on one of our main channels called the Mentalist and I think it's brilliant!

The mentalist sucks, it is a failure and you should have your head checked.
House is an American show, a good one (sure the main character is actually a British actor but still) so to sum up: mentalist=fail.

Out opinions may differ dry.gif

2. Celtic mythology?

Celtic mythology is great, although not quite a colorful as the Norse or Greek stories. You have stories such as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%C3%BAchulainn (Ireland), or as mentioned previously, King Arthur and the knights. Otherwise there are many ancient Gods etc, but the Druids weren't keen on written texts (as the Greek poets or the Viking bards were) and so much has been lost. Examples of Gods include the Dagda, Lugg and Morrigan (only ones I can remember off the top of my head).

What did you think of the Merlin and Demons series (if you managed to catch them). Also, if you watch it, have you seen the new Dr Who?

Hallmark is a little behind, the latest series is only shown in America thanks to the mentalist.
I haven't seen those series because I forget they're on and I don't get a chance to watch them anyway. Did see the Doctor Who episode over easter though, love the Doctor lol.

Yes I saw it! Brilliant, and agreed, love that show. What did you think of Michelle Ryan? I reckon there was something going on there in real life....

Also... Lee Evans too. He was funny.

Sorry to everyone, but Dr Who could take on Justice League and Avengers and win!

Is Sherlock Holmes cool or what?

Yes, 10,000,000,000 years ago.
