Here is some work I did regarding advertisements. Only a small part of the coursework as a hole, but it's what's on my computor:

Advertisement Annotation

The advertisement for the video game “Viking: Battle for Asgard”, has a number of important features that it uses to attract its intended audience. This audience would be male teenagers and young adults, and it has things that would be interesting to them.

An important part of the advertisement is the title of the product. Situated in the centre of it, the logo for the game is in a font that would be associated with the theme of the game (In this case, Vikings). It stands out, coloured white against a darker background, with pattering in the letters.

The central, foreground image is of a Viking warrior, stood in a battle position. He is bathed in white light from the sky behind, creating a striking visual, instantly noticeable to a reader. Around him are bodies, creating the stereotypical “Viking savage”. For a teenager, this would be attractive.

In the background, at the top of the advertisement, is a close-up image of the Vikings eyes can be seen. This helps to create an atmosphere for the game before it is even played, aiming to make people want to play the game.

Below the logo, there are more images, this time of game play itself. These are smaller, as they cannot create the same kind of visualisation as the main image can, and the graphical quality is not up to the same standard. They do, however, give more reasons to persuade a potential buyer to purchase the product, by explaining some of the in game features.

Three short sentences are featured in the advertisement, in front of the image (Note that they do not cover the Viking warrior himself, however). These increase the atmosphere further, and add to the stereotype of what a Viking is, by mentioning “the Gods”, “A Hero”, and “Show No Mercy”.

Near the bottom, below the as yet unreleased release date, the product website is shown, in order to attract people to find out more about the game.

At the very bottom, the age rating of the game is given. This is legally required. Trademarks are also shown here, as well as the company logo (SEGA).

Advertising Standards Authority

The ASA ensures the standard of advertisement in the UK is kept at a high level, using the advertising standards codes. They ensure the legality of advertisements, making sure that promotions are run fairly, and help to remove offensive or misleading advertisements.

They listen to complaints made about advertisements, and then they investigate the advertisements in question. They also regulate advertisements themselves, and deal with problems that arise.

The advertising standards codes deal with what is and what isn’t legal in British advertising. The main principles deal with misleading, harmful or offensive advertisements. Some advertisements, dealing with alcohol, health, motoring, and prize promotions, are special cases, with their own specific rules.

If a complaint is looked into by the ASA, and seen as breaching the rules, then most companies will change or remove the offending material. However, The Office of Fair Trading and Ofcom can be trusted to deal with repeat offenders.
