Steve Yzerman all the way. He's scored more points than Joe, and was the captain of the Wings for nearly 20 years. Sakic is close, but not in the "legends" category that Yzerman is in... yet.

Yzerman was the third greatest player of the 80's and 90's time. But sadly, his legacy was overshadowed by Gretzky and Lemieux.

Next.

Nicklas Lidstrom vs. Rob Blake.

BTW, super_wolvie, thanks a million for posting such a cool topic. Hockey is near and dear to my heart, showing once and for all that Canadians aren't they only ones who enjoy ice hockey. They invented it, but it's spread beyond mere borders. ;)

Super_wolvie, you'd never mentioned before that you had an interest in hockey. I'm intrigued to see that you have an interest in the subject. B)

ok now it's my turn

Jaomir Jagr (when he was with the Pens) v.s nickalaus lindstrom

Darn you darn you darn you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm a Red Wings fan for life, but my second favorite team is the Pens!!! Curse you for pitting my loyalties against each other!!!

OK, they're hard to compare one on one, because of their varied position. In a one on one skils battle, a good D can usually trump even the best forward, about 70% of the time. Lids is THE best defenseman, far and above, and has been for about the last 15 years. He is amazingly talented, a strong skater, reliable (before his knee injury this year, he only missed 15 regular season games during 15 years of skating), and dominant. He isn't physical, but he doesn't have to be: he's so smart, and can read the plays so well, that you uses positioning to deny a skater a chance to score, or pass, for that matter. Some are saying that he is the greatest European trained player of our time, simply because he is still consistently playing and scoring at 38, while Jagr has tapered off a bit, I think. Winning the Norris Trophy 5 times in the last 6 years says something as well, and he's nominated for it, and projected as the clear winner, again this year. My pick goes to Nick.

Next:

The battle of the Russian phenoms: Alexander Ovechkin vs. Evgeni Malkin. Both are amazing forwards, both won the Calder Trophy as rookies, both have scored over one hundred points in a season, and both are big (Alex: 6-2, 220, Malkin: 6-3, 225) and strong enough to lay crushing hits onto any defenseman unfortunate enough to get in their way.

super_wolverine_Man - May 14, 2008 01:56 PM (GMT)
that's tough, i mean both players are very talented, darn YOU wingy, but malkin has my vote, i just think he's a better team player.

Ha, it seems we both know just what players to match up so that we infuriate the other. B)

Maurice Richards v.s Gordie Howe

Hmm, Maurice revolutionized the game during his day, and was the first to score 50 goals in a season. And he's got a trophy named after him. But Gordie played longer than any other player. He is one of the all-time greats, but I think Maurice added more to the game than Gordie. Gordie's highest goal total for a season was 47. Now, he amassed a great number of points by playing for 30 years, but those aren't Gretzky or Lemieux numbers.

"The Rocket" for the win.

Next: Dion Phaneuf vs. Niklas Kronwall.

Good to know, although Kronwall's been making a name for himself. During the playoffs, he's been catching players skating with their heads down, then hammering them. He got two great hits like that in one game versus Colorado. The announcers calling those kinds of hits "Kronwallian" hits.

And that goalie choice is tough. They're close, but I'll go for the Dominator, partly since he's played for the Wings (yeah, I'm biased. Sue me.), and partly because he's the only goaltender in history to win the Hart Trophy for season MVP more than once. That is a serious award to give him, and it reflects his dominant play in Buffalo.

It's OK, I can take it. You have to remember, I live in central PA, about thirty minutes from Penn State, so I get this from everyone I meet. My dad, my pastor, the guys who work at the place I eat all the time, my entire church, all my friends, are Pens fans. I'm the only Wings fan in a state evenly split between Flyers and Pens fans. This time of year, it's almost as dangerous as an Ohio State fan living in Michigan. ;)
