EDIT: After further reading in the 'Retiring' forums thread, a few of you have moved to the Mecha Guignol boards there, I would still like to know how everyone's been doing these days!
So I decide to pop over to the CBUB like I do sporadically and what do I find? The Ferret has finally closed up shop.
And I didn't even get to say goodbye!
It is this lack of closure, and perhaps the lateness of the hour, that I post here. Just wanted to give a big thank you for making those years spent at EF and here a positive experience. I hope everyone is doing well in their current lives (whatever that may be). It'd be really cool to get an update! You guys don't call, don't write. From brief lurking, I know ND4 has grown majestically since his time here but that's all I can gather.
I realize that it's likely this will be seen by people I may not know as well, and there's nothing wrong with that. Hope you guys are doing well as well! Hopefully with the closing of EF, people will stop by here and see this message. Granobulax, wherefore out thou? I would love to see how your life turned out. The last thing I remember is you getting that divorce. You can't leave me with such a negative cliffhanger!
So, if anyone happens to pop by, post a comment. Sure, it may take MONTHS for a reply from me and others but at least it's guaranteed to happen -eventually-. :)
With much mirth and well-wishing,
Your friend Bassetman
PS: I of course must go over my time at CBUB, but you don't have to read this part haha.
I stumbled upon the CBUB after a really big google search of a website to help me determine who would win against who in fictional fights; I was likely 11 or 12 at the time. My first match ever was Alucard vs. Master Roshi, after trying my best to wiki-search and find out not only how to write Alucard, but who he was as well! It was pretty crappy, probably like 4 lines long, and I got torn apart haha. The only person to be nice to me was Geomease, and I always remembered that. That kept me from quitting.
I eventually took up Freakazoid! as my go-to match guy, and I slowly was passable at writing set-ups. The people themselves though like Hamboy, Geomease, Shockwave, HellHound3, Alien King, and then the infamous folks at the forum like Ivan, Rhekarid, Landon, MMM, ThreeDark and Sir Exal sort of jumpstarted my maturity levels with the former through camaraderie and the latter folks terrifying me. Lil' me was regularly interacting with folks 17 years old and beyond, and it showed.
I don't remember many of my matches haha, but I remember I was proud of a few (Mainly this one involving the Muppets. I loved me some Muppets Still do!). I recall loving Jose Perez Acosta *last name foggy*'s Looney Tunes matches and thinking they were the epitome of writing (they were pretty damn good), being annoyed at Rei-Kai for trying to enforce the Feats system of judging matches; not knowing that later I would join CBR who uses that system for their Rumbles and find it passable. In the days of the mass RPing that went on with the Queen Jaretha plotline, I always looked forward to Shockwave's matches and their continuation of the big fight against...Callisto? The antagonist is fuzzy, I just remember all the users getting some spotlight in his set-ups fighting the good fight with their respective abilities. I had the Omnitrix, Shockwave was a Katana-wielding badass, and Geomease was that borderline-god 40 Dimensional being (Not very fair looking back haha). When I look at what I can recall sure there's some cringe worthy moments on my behalf, but all in all it was a positive experience.
Once I made my way to the forums I got to read the cynical hilarity that those guys dished out. I usually stuck to some fun RPs (quite a few done by Sharpshooter. Speaking of which, anyone heard from him!?). There was a Pokemon Trainer one, one involving the plotline of Gantz, probably some others. There was this HUGE RP fight in one, it was basically one big free free for all for poster personas. It's little things like that that will stick with me, say what you will about an internet forum being a cool memory, it's my late childhood! I remember Alien King lifted us all up BY OUR BODILY FLUIDS and the only way I got out was because I went Diamondhead using the Omnitrix who indeed had no bodily fluids haha. You can't just leave it to TELEVISION to think something up like that.
A little while later I was invited to this very website, an offshoot of CBUB due to disagreements of Phalanx and some members. His escape, indeed his haven, became this place, and equally fond memories were created here thanks to you fine people. I feel like I'm losing a precious childhood friend in the closing of EF, because it was such a large influence on my younger self. I had social problems as a young kid and I feel like EF grounded me through bonding through a mutual interest in fictional fights with internet folks and gave me that lighthouse to reach the shore. So of course I'm sentimental in its closing. But I know I'll take it with me, these seemingly innocuous or silly happenings, and defend them with the knowledge that I probably turned out a bit better than I would have if I hadn't followed through on that Google search.
Sorry for the giant post. You don't have to read all that. Needed to get it all out for posterity's sake! I hope you ALL are having and will HAVE lovely lives!
