Title: Lincoln vs Obama

Guardian of Nesh - December 30, 2008 01:52 AM (GMT)
Abraham Lincoln vs Barack Obama in the elections of 1860, who wins more votes IN THE SOUTH? This one should be a little harder as historicly Lincoln wasn't on southern ballots and the south would not vote for a black man at this time.

Hmmm. Well I think Abe would take it by a landslide.

The south viewed him as an abolissionist and that's about the last ting they wanted.

Obama doesn't win. The Southerners would much rather vote for a white man, but seeings how he isn't on their ballot, they would vote for neither.

Yeah in reality neither would get any but Lincoln is more likely. The only reason obama won the recent elections is because of time and place. Put anywhere else in U.s. History and he'd lose, horribly.

You clearly aren't very good at history. Black people couldn't vote, which if Obama was that good of a speaker, wouldn't matter. He could get white people to vote, but they were all racists. And this is just in the South. NO ONE WINS PEOPLE. God, get that through your thick skulls.

Back then Presidents won because of their actual credintianls. How they were quoted in the newspapers is what people across the country saw. In todays superficial world, Lincoln wouldn't have stood a chance of winning the Presidency.

No, you were wrong. The reason Lincoln won was because he was a great speaker. The newspapers were the only communication for the vast majority of the country; no tv to see his face on. The fact that he was a very ugly man by today's standards would have made listening to him on the tv a difficult task for most non-educated people in todays world.

I was merely commenting on how Presidents won because of what they were about, not because of how they looked.Television has vastly changed how polititions are elected in this country today.

Here, to help prove my point, back in 1960, John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon squared off in some of the greatest debates this country has ever seen. When the votes for those who saw the debates on tv came in, Kennedy won handily. When the votes for those who listened to the debates on the radio came in, Nixon won handily.

Actually seeing the candidate makes a huge difference.

In this case here, Obama would have lost handily because the news of him being black would have reached every southerner. With it being a time of definate inequality, it would have been an ugly loss.
