Title: Pokemon - It's been 10 years.

Phalanx - November 8, 2008 06:40 PM (GMT)
Well the reason I made this topic is so I could tell you that it's been a 10-year anniversary since I have gotten myself hooked on Pokemon in its glory year, right before I moved onto to digimon for several years and back. So here's my approximately mapped out history of my fandom and experience with Pokemon and briefly Nintendo fandom.

It all started in the Fall of 1998 where the only anime I barely have heard of before/during such time were Doraemon, Totoro, Dragon Ball Z, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Speed Racer, and Sailor moon. When I went into my friend's house, I saw a little bit of Pokemon on TV and it got me really interested. So basically every saturday morning, I decided to record Pokemon on my tape. It was my best watched show ever.

From 1998-1999, I had tons of fun every morning in the Cafeteria roleplaying Pokemon with my classmates and when it was time to go, we all head up to our class and just got back to regular studying. From those two years, it seems as if not talking about Pokemon was to not live a fun and meaningful life. Almost everyday, it's as if there's nothing else important or interesting to talk about other than Pokemon. Pokemon was the state fandom of my life back then. And because of the overwhelming popularity and fanwanking to the craze, I proudly thought that there was no opponent that the Pokemon themselves couldn't take on.

During the time of the fandom of course, there had been several controversial cases when the adults of my years had got into contact with the franchise. A few of my teachers thought that Pokemon was extremely violent, when they were clearly ignorant of how anime typically functions and that there are more violent anime out there. They even possible went as far to equate the level of violence in Pokemon to that of real-life violence such as bombings and fire.

Then there was the first Pokemon movie. From then on, I saw how badass Mewtwo was in there and in fact it kinda struck me how invincible the movie portrayed him. Not too long after, there was this new generation of pokemon. I was puzzled at its newness and kinda preferred the first generation pokemon more.

It wasn't until sometime in late 1999 that I switched from Pokemon to Digimon. From that year on until late 2002, Digimon was the succeeding state fandom of my life. The magical obsession I had for Digimon was just like Pokemon, only with a little more spark and excitement to it. It wasn't until the end of 2002 that I had bought a Gamecube for Christmas and had started to enter the absolute peak level of my Nintendo fanboyism for 4 years. Which had to do with the reason that my fanwank for Digimon declined and slowly returned to Pokemon, though with a lot less excitement than 1998-1999. Pokemon during the early years of the new millenium had faced outgrowth of it audience just like DBZ and Naruto.

2004 was the year I had officially became a regular Internet user talking to people other than in real life for the first time. I was at an anti-pokemon site called Pokemonsux.com and in the guestbook I had felt the need to defend pokemon and during this year, I had several flame wars with both pokehaters and pokefans alike. I was extremely defensive of Pokemon for its fanbase (not power), though I didn't feel much true enthusiastic love for the series, but only for the fact that it was a fellow Nintendo franchise, which I felt the unparalleled need to defend and praise. It is also the year where I had began to develop a strong anti-Digimon sentiment.

From 2005-2006, my concern for and attitude towards Pokemon seemed relatively static, inactive, and quiet for the most part, despite being a part of the final two years in which my Nintendo fanboyism was at its all-time highest. The junior high school years (2004-2006) was in fact the darkest age of a social fanboy environment for me as of yet. I had to tirelessly face Sony and Microsoft fanboys from every corner alone and I led an infuriated and persecuted life as a Nintendo fanboy. During Summer 2006, I had heard of a new nintendo console coming out called the Wii. I felt the Wii was the sign of great redemption and salvation to Nintendo and its loyal fans like me. Also on gamefaqs in 2006, I had enjoyed seeing Link, Samus, Mario, and other Nintendo characters gaining top dog status in the popularity tournaments and that was probably the only prouder moments of being a nintendo fanboy.

From the end of January 2007, my absolute fanwanking to Nintendo had started to decline gradually. Even my historically long and unconditional faith for the abilities/power of Nintendo characters had also started to fizzle once I had found there were people who could beat Link easily and that was the most painful transition for me in all my fanboy years. From January to May that year, the Looney Tunes as well as several other toons like the animaniacs enjoyed their status as my top fandoms.

Since the direction of this topic has been kinda drifting off to nintendo fandom, let's get back to Pokemon shall we? From early to mid 2007, my concern for Pokemon was also very silent and distilled just like from 2005-2006. From May to July 2007, I had witnessed on another vs. forum how Link got underestimated and put down by a lot of fanboys, especially the anti-Nintendo ones. Aside from the Link vs. Cloud debate, I couldn't bear to see Link get slaughtered by god of war Kratos in arguments and such. Since god of war kratos was from sony, I felt extremely crushed and pessimistic about him and nintendo characters in general. During that month is where my revival of huge respect for Pokemon came into the picture. When a certain friend on another vs. forum (known as Godzilla_Addict on this forum, but doesn't come here anymore) told me about new legendary pokemon like Arceus, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, etc. and about their powers. I kept figuring if they could potentially rival the cosmic beings of Marvel, then they could take down Kratos for good.

In August 2007, after reconciling my fanboy hatred for Kratos (though still NOT for sony obviously), I had praised Pokemon as the "strongest" characters/universe in the Nintendo family. I currently saw them as sort of the ultimate last-minute savior for every character on Nintendo's side. When I heard from ZillaLord (aka Godzilla_Addict) via the PM about how Arceus, Dialga, and Palkia could take on the X-Men, Phoenix, Galactus, Eternity, Infinity, Thanos w/ IG, and even the Living Tribunal himself. From those words, I felt much pride and power coming from the pokemon and it was one of the happiest moments in my life. Despite knowing that they are typically underestimated in power, I felt really confident in them all the way.

However at the end of August 2007, someone posted a Pokemon vs. Digimon match under the guise of Pokemon vs. Renamon. This kinda brought me back to the days of where I defended Pokemon against Digimon many times out of fanbase. But this time, it was completely different. It was out of the arduous question of who could prevail in battle/who was stronger. When Pokemon had won, I felt temporarily calm and collected, but unfortunately this would only the prelude to a largely disastrous three months of pain and darkness that would soon envelope me.

Listen, I know this is the fricking past, but it's a sad story and I feel like retelling it for the umpteenth time anyways. When someone had added Digimon into the CBUB fanbase, someone had posted the Pokemon vs. Digimon match. I got into the match and I voted for Pokemon, however I was really surprised to find out that Digimon is winning in both votes and comments. From the posts above to down, I read about how uber destructively overpowered the whole Digimon race were and I was struck as really shocked and humiliated to know that Pokemon would get curbstomped by its "inferior" imitation for the greatest rival. However the match ended in a scratch and I temporarily felt calm and collected once again, but for only so shortly.

On another vs. forum, ZillaLord (aka Godzilla_Addict) posted a DBZ vs. Digimon match. I was also shocked to find out that Digimon had a multiverse buster and could wipe out DBZ in seconds. All this time until then, I thought Digimon wasn't really much of a threat to Pokemon when I thought pokemon could use their elemental attacks against the ones weak against the respective attacks of them and the fact that Mewtwo was on their side.

Oh and hamboy, just in case you're reading this, please know I no longer have the slightest grudge against you for this event (though I still can feel the pain from it), so just to let you know you're fine now. Ok onto the story, when someone (aka hamboy) on CBUB reposted the match, I was again surprised to find out that Pokemon was losing in both votes and comments by FAR and despite multi-accounting Pokemon still had suffered the most humiliating loss of 2007. From September 1st to November 16th 2007, I felt extremely depressed, sad, and rotten on the inside that Pokemon couldn't even beat a rip-off of themselves. I tried to defend pokemon as much as possible and I kept trying to think up arguments of how Pokemon could beat Digimon and after reading that pokemon vs. digimon topic on gamefaq's pokemon board, I felt even more depressed and angsty. This just proved how much of a dangerously disappointing folly it was to put all my faith in the Pokemon race's abilities and powers, even with arceus/dialga/palkia on their side. I kept wishing and hoping for Pokemon to be just as strong as Pokemon in the 5th Generation, let alone an overpowered version of the Pokemon universe. I started to think the power of the whole Nintendo side (apparently) wasn't all it was cracked up to be. All that time, I secretly kept the depression of pokemon losing to digimon to myself. When the pokemon vs. digimon match was reposted, I had revealed my true sentiments and thoughts from what happened when Pokemon lost and I had left CBUB for a week.

For the rest of 2007, I felt it was no longer fitting to put faith in the Pokemon as they get underestimated typically. I was extremely under immense pressure of the Pokemon being persecuted and underestimated in coolness and power. IT was in fact the darkest moments of that year for me. Everyone poked fun at Pokemon for being weak cause they can't do anything impressive while being restrained in video game mechanics. It became harder and harder to defend the pokemon and I felt too sad.

Then at the end of January 2008, I decided to detach my faith and fandom from Pokemon and had seeked new comfort and fandom by switching to Snk, Capcom, and Greco-Roman Mythology, thus replacing Pokemon and even Nintendo for the most part. For pretty much most of 2008, I was a fanboy of mythology, snk, capcom, and the wii of course and my concern for Pokemon was small at best (save for that time in March when Boston_Celtics posted the sony/microsoft vs. nintendo/sega match and I had temporarily brought back my faith in pokemon for that occasion). I also ended my hatred for Digimon seeing as they also get underestimated a lot on CBUB and that they also used to be a top fandom of mine.

During Summer 2008, Guardian of Nesh thought I was disrespecting Pokemon and Nintendo cause of how I treated my new fandoms with more respect and love. I told him all about why I had done this and he told me that it was stupid to detach Pokemon and go for other stuff that more people love/like to just feel better as that is not the true actions of a fan. Out of feeling regret for having "disrespecting" Nintendo in Nesh's eyes, I decided to support Nintendo again.

Recently in November 2008, I had felt a slight need to come back to supporting Pokemon again. When i had visited gamefaqs this morning and found Pokemon at first place on the top ten list of best franchises in the past ten years, I felt proud and nostalgic of Pokemon again. It was 10 years ago from this Fall that I had gotten wildly into the Pokemon craze and I shall never forget it, but I'm still shaky about the whole pokemon race's abilities/powers however.

Damn it took me at least three hours to write all this.

....sad story, dude, sory. Digimon is just way too over powered. They had a feaking multi universe buster? there was only on digiworld wasn't there? I still kinda like it though I don't watch or play it, my favorite will always be Charizard and Typhlosion.

E-Apple - November 8, 2008 06:46 PM (GMT)
but, I admit the truth, I like Digimon better since it was more realistic, you know? we could do that in the future.....make a world like that and inject our minds in it...that would be cool. maybe the same for the Pokemon..... I always thought that they would become great allies....

You don't have to tell me the news. I already admitted long ago (and painfully) digimon would stomp. But the real purpose of this topic was just to tell people on this forum that it's been 10 years from this Fall since I have been introduced into the wild Pokemon craze and nothing more.

Does anyone here still remember what life was like in Fall 1998 when the Pokemon Craze came? It was like the golden ages.

E-Apple - November 9, 2008 03:56 AM (GMT)

I use to defend Poke'mon against Digi'mon as well. I loved Poke'mon just like you did.

I don't know who would win now because the Poke'mon have the God Poke'mon who can bend time and space and such. Then their are the god Digimon....

I say it's a tie.

Well yeah I'd call it a tie out of some respect for both sides. But if Pokemon really wants to realistically defeat or even match Digimon, they're going to have to wait til Generation V and that's if the next generation of Pokemon brings them REALLY REALLY OVERPOWERED GODSMIC*-ORIENTED CREATURES. So in other words, unless Pokemon gets some new and more powerful creatures, they're going to stand a miniscule chance at best even with A/D/P.

Usually the only chance a character from one series has against another is if there was a sequel or any future installments made for the first character's series and made him stronger than ever.

*A mix of godly and cosmic.

well, the pokemons have more moves than the digi do so they could use protect repeateldly, regardless if the Digi is a god.......

Hey, I feel your pain Grano. Every time somebody comes up with a Mario vs Sonic match I lose all faith in my own fandoms.

Glad to see someone shares my sentiments, although the "losing faith in fandoms" things is just for the abilities/powers of your favorites, not their awesomeness/coolness/hotness/whatever other aesthetical qualities they have. However I hope my story does not affect your mood and view of everything. Ok?

Now let's not turn this into another pokemon vs. digimon debate just to shield out further fanboy disturbance.

Let's get back to the glory days of when Pokemon was the absolute best thing of our time.
