QUOTE (dbuel @ Nov 25 2009, 08:03 PM)
Hint: Raising taxes, putting a strain on people and businesses, causing unemployment to go up, and then inventing a handful of government jobs does not mean you lowered unemployment

but raising taxes isn't what they want to do. in fact, keynesian economics says specifically NOT to raise taxes during economic hard times; you lower them, deficit spend until you're out of it, then raise them during the boom times. no one is proposing raising taxes on anyone but those making over $250k right now, and even with his campaign promises to do so, he hasn't done so yet.

It's amazing to me how on the one hand, you can act like Obama's government takeover utopia doesn't have to involve tax increases, and then on the other hand fight tooth and nail whenever anyone tells you that you don't have to raise taxes to get more revenue.

the way Germany prevented massive unemployment was by legislation that makes it difficult to fire workers

FMM believes this

you ever heard of Kurzarbeit? it's kinda hard to fire a worker if the government is paying you not to fire him

wars are deficit neutral (because you can loot the other guy's oil)

Oh, so the president isn't responsible for that then. Thanks. It seems like you're willing to selectively ignore and not ignore the economy whenever it's convenient for you. That's nice.

It seems like this chart abandons your entire "lag" philosophy entirely, no?

lag is one or two years, not eight.

Okay, so we're almost allowed to blame Obama for the unemployment figures. Just a few more months to go!

and apparently this was a question!

Man, I don't get this. I used to be totally against all deficit spending, but one day arguing here or old misetings or somewhere, it was explained how it actually works in practice and I was like, ah, ok. Actual classes in college eventually backed that up, obv, but still.

I cannot help but think that person was dbuel. Maybe I am wrong, but I really remember dbuel at some point going to bat for deficit spending to build infra and ensure better revenues down the road.

I mean, it makes perfect sense. You put your emergency car repairs/medical bills/etc on the credit card and you pay it back when your car isn't broken anymore. Not deficit spending out of a recession is like sitting there insisting on missing work to fix it with a wrench on the side of the road because you can't stand the thought of paying interest to discover.

E: and if you look at it that way, most presidents have actually done this. Recession presidents spend like crazy, the president after them balances the budget. Reagan, Bush sr. and Clinton totally worked like a team toward that surplus.

In an era when you can fit many gigabytes onto a device small enough to be swallowed by a cat and even your local bait shop has a website, phone companies still want us to find phone numbers the same way we did 100 years ago: by dragging out a bulky, ten-pound list printed on dead trees.

No, he was actually just pretending that was a question. He was actually talking about slearch.

Right, there's nothing wrong with that kind of deficit spending. You just don't want to avoid getting rid of the deficit after the financial hard times are over. America just enjoys spending itself to death too damn much.
