This thread is for the discussion of chapter 1 only - please try not to get ahead of every one else in the discussion! It's not fun to follow along if you're not able to keep up, and we'd like a chance for everyone who wants to be included to be a part of this. smile.gif

Also - we're discussing the book and the characters of the book only. Talk about the non-fictional folks has a home in the "On The Road" thread in the "Future Projects" section.

QUOTE
The theme of ideas of the East--intellectual, stagnant, old, saddened, and critical--versus ideas of the West--passionate, young, exuberant and wild--starts here; characters are often described with the attributes of the places which they are from--or rather, Sal's idea of that place (See descriptions of Dean and Marylou). Both Dean, "Western kinsman of the sun," and the West, for Sal, are new horizons, wild, open and free.

So...I'm at the library now, with the book. I'm not sure how much I'm going to be able to participate though. My library's copy is a rendition of the original scroll, so I'm not sure how much variance it will have from the one you guys are reading, there are no divisions between chapters so I won't know how far I should read, and there's no ending laugh.gif
Apparently a dog ate the end of the scroll, so there's only a little blurb that says "...here's what the lost ending might have looked like." blink.gif

So...I guess I will just comment on what you guys have to say so I don't divulge anything if I end up ahead.

Elle is reading the same version, Lauren... hmm... you know, it might be cool if y'all started your own thread with the original scroll version and then we had one for the 'final' cut of it, so to speak, and then we could compare and contrast the versions.

Just for fun of course, and y'all are totally welcome to continue to post in this thread, it's just an idea smile.gif

I think now is just a bad time for a book club - I know a bunch of board members have finals right now, I manage a bookstore and am worn out when I am home, and the holidays are just eating up everyone's time. Maybe once January rolls around we'll give it another shot. Or maybe once the movie is official *fingers crossed* pray.gif

I figured I'd ask. I've just finished finals.. (I really hope I did well too), but I'm going to be really busy as January starts.. it's my last year at Uni.. and I'm up to my neck in classes so I don't think I'll be around much. I'd like to see what everyone else things, if this gets started up again though.

My copy of the original scroll finally came in the mail yesterday so I'm excited to start reading it but I won't have a chance to until after finals and my last day is the 15th
