Title: Currently Reading/ Book Thread
Description: Recommendations, etc
MaliceInWonderland - May 27, 2009 08:11 PM (GMT)
I thought we could start a book thread to discuss recommended reads, books to avoid, or similar points.
Currently I'm reading Fragile Eternity which is the third book in the Wicked Lovely series by Melissa Marr. It's quite good thus far, but I almost wish that I had reread the first book or two again before this one. There are many characters to keep track of and it's taking me longer than usual to catch up. :oh:

ferret14uk - May 27, 2009 09:14 PM (GMT)
curretnly reading Duma Key by stephen king...its weird. it was reconmended by my father in-law about a man who suffered an accident and movies away from his family and starts doing incrediable creepy drawings...something about shells talking to him, a weird ass doll and im at a point where he is draws a man that looks exactly like is future son in-law before he even saw a picture of him...
books i reconmend...
Maximum Ride Books...well at least the first two...the third book seem way too imature...about a girl who was genetically modified, had avian d.n.a into her causing her to hav wings also with five other children. though out the books they develop more unusual abilities...Max was created to save the world(this reminds me tooo much of Dark Angel...transgentic girl with the name MAX created to save the world)
Earth children series written by Jean Aual...1.st book called "Clan of the cave bear", 2nd "Valley of the horses", 3rd "The mammoth hunters", 4th "plains of passage" and 5th "shelter of stone" these are huge books so this isnt for light reading...oh and they can be quite graphic in a certain area...(i would reconmend these books to over 18)
the series is set in the ice age where a little girl loses her family and was found by some neth-an-dol clan...despite the speices difference she is taken in and raised as one...with major problems along the roads...overall its a love story which is worth reading thrown in with something mystical. The author is well accepted in the research of ancient man as she actually goes round and experience things for herself so she can give a highly knowledgeable story. but again warning about some content of it :P
Twilight series... :P i bet alot of you have already read it...vampires, shapeshifters go read it...but it can be frustrating at times as it feels like it has been written for a moderate okay fanfic...
harry potter...is there much point? magic wizards...if u havent read it yet...get off ur backside go to the bookshop and bye a copy...dont want to spend money? GO TO THE LIBRARY
The last vampire(six books) by christopher pike...one of the 1st books that got me hungering for books...i would reconmend it anyday
comic books :P
Hellboy: witty humor great stories and unique art style...read it
B.P.R.D: same thing...more of my favoute fish man
X23 innocent lost: good story and nice art work...i love reading it...
Buffy series 8: worth a look at see wat has happened to the scooby gang after wat happened on the t.v show...lots of laughter in it as it screams the directers work!!
Lenore: Random stories of a dead zoble girl and a little vampire turned into a doll
Xombie:Reanimated...a countiuation of the story that can be found here
xombiemanga:
Doll: interesting book about machines in human form and what happens to them...
Life: a girl going into either junior or senior high who gets bullied and is a cutter...makes me addictive to it!!
Qwan: follows some historic events in china and the art is amazing...mystical child that hungers for demons rather human food, with unusual weapon and supernatural strength...
Chunchu:A boy betrayed by his brother soon after birth, a prophesy that a child will be born with a devil soul...

I'm catching up on books I never read when Iwas little and should have...currently halfway through "The Neverending Story"....
If you like raunchy sex and Vampires werewolves demons and zombies read Laurell K Hamilton...she's my dirty little secret, i Love to read her but dont like to admit it lol.
BlackKat - June 27, 2009 04:06 AM (GMT)
Right now I'm re-reading Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (book 6) for the third or fourth time in preparation for the movie release next month. At the same time, I'm going back through Alice in Wonderland.
SparkDragon, I've been trying to get ahold of a copy of The Neverending Story for years but haven't managed to do it yet. I've always loved the movie. How is the book?
I recommend The Picture of Dorian Gray. it is a mystifying mind-bender that shows no matter how beautiful a person is, they are as ugly as can be.
Also, Pollyanna. It's just so sweet!
Yeah, I love classics.
SparkDragon - June 30, 2009 10:32 PM (GMT)
I got it on ebay...its good but its hard not to think of the movie when u read it (for me anyways)....the original move (i dont know about the sequels b/c i refuse to watch them) is only the first quarter of the book. there is a whole lot more about bastian, the story is mostly about him and not Atreyu

Such a Nice Idea, Malice. Books are my sense of life.
Unfortunately, I basically read hispanoamerican authors -since I'm studying hispanoamerican literature-, so I'm not very familiar with foreings books. Anyway, I'm currently reading Devil Guardian (original title: Diablo Guardián) By the mexican Xavier Velasco, who won the Alfaguara prize in 2003; such an amazing novel this is.
Once again, thank you for this topic, I'll be checking it out everytime.
MaliceInWonderland - July 7, 2009 08:20 PM (GMT)
No prob. I've been putting off full posts of books I've read recently due to time, but I'll try to catch up soon.
LadyChusei - August 10, 2009 08:26 PM (GMT)
I have just finished reading (tonight) Stephenie Meyer 'THE HOST'.
I thought it was brilliant and I really felt a lot of empathy towards the two main characters 'wanderer' and 'melanie', well written book and not what I was expecting after the twilight novels of the author.
I love books about Aliens so this was just what I was in the mood to read.
Highly recommended

Gothic_Redemption - August 10, 2009 11:21 PM (GMT)
Just yesterday I finished Lolita, and I think everyone ought to read it...
And, I reccomend anything by Neil Gaiman (especially The Sandman), and Stephen King's Dark Tower series.
BlackKat - August 12, 2009 04:17 AM (GMT)
I've been thirsting to read a certain book of Neil Gaiman's...like a mango milkshake... *wink*
My sister wants to read Meyers Host series too...
Right now I am re-reading The Wizard of Oz, and it really makes me want to see Tim Burton's version of it! hmmm... *starts writing screenplay*
BlackKat - August 17, 2009 01:53 AM (GMT)
Because of my sister, I've begun a series called 'The Vampire Diaries' which has a tv show based on it about to premier in the U.S. its kind of horrible :haha: then again I never was one for teen drama-o-rama novels.
a lot of people have been saying that Stephanie Meyer stole the story of these to make Twilight, which I can't really see, but if she did I can't blame her, as Twilight was a much better book than this...not to mention these books are about 100 pages apiece, and the Twilight series is a regular phone book.
BlackKat - August 19, 2009 03:43 AM (GMT)
Last night I re-read Jerry Spinelli's 'The Library Card' in about two hours since I couldn't sleep. definitely one of my favorite books from when I was a kid! but definitely not just a book for kids, lol. I adore Jerry Spinelli's stuff...he also wrote 'Maniac MacGee.'

Coraline, I take it?
Have you read The Graveyard Book yet? It's bloody wicked!
I lovedddd The Host. It's simply brilliant. I really love the moral and psychological themes involved, especially the underlying desire to define "human". Splendid read, indeed.
I recently read "Wake", and I'm reading the sequel entitled "Fade" by Lisa McMann. They're about a high school girl who never dreams on her own, but she gets sucked into others' dreams. She gets woken up, but all she can see is in the dreams, she starts to become numb, etc. Very good read.
BlackKat - August 22, 2009 05:04 AM (GMT)
If its really good then I will definitely check it out soon hehe  and yes, you're right, it's Coraline! sounds like my sis would really enjoy Wake, she loves 'dreamwalker' type stories.
Right now I'm dying for
this book! Look! That's David from The Lost Boys on the coverrrrrr!!!!!!
And
this one as well heehee! the only problem is that I ran aout of money for books :haha:
MaliceInWonderland - August 22, 2009 07:16 AM (GMT)
Do be forewarned that the book is quite different from the movie. There's no Wybie, she defeats the Other Mother in a different way, etc. So there are lots of changes. Just so you know before you read it. But I really loved both.
The Vampire book intrigues me.
Alas I've not purchased books in a very long time. But I work at a library, so I'm never for lack of reading, at least.
BlackKat - August 23, 2009 03:52 AM (GMT)
Yup, didja know Henry Selick just put Wybie in the movie so Coraline wouldn't be talking to herself all the time?
I'm very excited to see what kind of changes were made. its kind of like being able to explore a whole world that I love even further.
you work in a library?????? *quietly* AWESOME!!! lucky you!
MaliceInWonderland - August 23, 2009 07:39 AM (GMT)
Ooohhh that makes sense lol. I /still/ haven't watched the extras or commentary.
I get what you mean. I was certainly that way with everything Death Note.
lol I've been there ages. That's one of my jobs, anyhow. I love the job, but hateeeee my boss and some of the people. *sigh*
BlackKat - August 23, 2009 06:36 PM (GMT)
if they're bugging you that badly than just tel them 'shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! you're bothering me!'
The extras are super fun, the making of parts are uber trippy! you won't be able to stop thinking about how they MADE that WHOLE WORLD by hand! everything you saw in the movie (save for flame, which was cel-animated in later) actualy existed! and I will tell you something now that isn't mentioned and you will only notice it if you are a super fangirl wierdo like me. in the very beginning of the movie when someone hands the moving man a $1 bill, that's Henry Selick's picture on the bill!

MaliceInWonderland - August 24, 2009 05:09 AM (GMT)
lol I've already gone through that trippy thought process when the web site was put up. So I'm excited to see how they DID it.
OHHHHHHHH! Thanks for telling me! I'll keep an eye out.
SparkDragon - August 24, 2009 10:54 PM (GMT)
I'm reading Stephen Kings "The Stand" again. Its been a long long long time. But the movie was on a few months back and made me wanna read it agian, that and when I bought it I got the uncut version with like 400 added pages and I never read it so now I am.
Gothic_Redemption - August 27, 2009 08:40 PM (GMT)
I'd like to read The Stand, since it's part of The Dark Tower...
I'm about 100 pages from the end of the whole main series. What an empty feeling.
MaliceInWonderland - August 28, 2009 06:31 AM (GMT)
I've not yet read The Dark Tower series, but I knew not that the two were connected aside from sharing an author. Interesting.
And on the topic of Stephen King, the last one of his I read recently was Cell. Very, very good.
SparkDragon - August 31, 2009 01:43 AM (GMT)
I love zombies so therefore I loved Cell. I own ever Stephen King book in hard cover. A note of advise, if u ever wanna read the Dark Tower Series u should read everything else he has written first. And no I am not kidding, the majority of his books and characters tie into the story and make it much richer and fullfilling if u are familiar with their stories. But the Dark Towers series is amazing anyhow, everyone should read it...although I warn u, the first book is a little boring and may feel hard to get through, but trust me its worth the frustration.
MaliceInWonderland - August 31, 2009 02:16 AM (GMT)
Wicked! I love tie-in's like that.
I was amazed with how much he did with Cell. Normally zombie books that large drag, get boring, or get to the point where you want everyone to die. lol With all the twists and changes, it stayed fresh and exciting throughout the entire book.
Gothic_Redemption - September 1, 2009 06:28 PM (GMT)
I've actually only read a few of King's books, outside of the Towerr. I'm working on it, though.
Demo_Pulchrarum - September 9, 2009 01:29 AM (GMT)
King is excellent, he knows what he's doing.
I'm reading EVERYTHING right now, and that's why I couldn't keep in touch with all of you. I just entered in magister class (I don't know how to translate the post-grade to english :S) so I'm reading a lot.. a lot! Geeesh.
Last book read: Juan Carlos Onetti - Juntacadáveres

I remember liking that one alot...that one has alot of the dark tower stuff in it but u dont need to have read the dark tower to understand, actually you understand bag of bones better after u read the dark tower, but u should not read the dark tower books till u read everything else lol...did that make any sense? lol If u read all his stuff it makes sense i promise....anyway u should like it kat, and they are making a movie out of it
BlackKat - September 15, 2009 10:51 PM (GMT)
Ahhh, maybe a little bit of sense actualy :haha:
I am liking it already  I don't remember what chapter I'm on but Mike just finished talking with the caretaker of Sara Laughs about coming back. Whoooo, those dreams creeped me ouuuuut!!! :haha: I haven't felt that way about a book since I was seven years old and read The Hangman's Ghost Trick! (memory supplies me with a scene of myself flinging said book across the room and screaming in terror! XD)
I will look out for the movie, I'm so glad to be able to get into some Stephen King stuff now, seeing as when I was a little kid my parents tried to keep me away from horror movies so I wouldn't have nightmares and junk, so his name was practically a dirty word of sorts in our house :haha: now that doesn't make sense.

ha ha, Well I am a huge fan so anything u wanna know about his books or movies come to me. I own and have read all of his books in hard cover and I have seen almost every movie they have made out of his books. Plus I have been getting the SK desk calendar for the past 4 years which has lots of random facts about him and things related to him lol.
BlackKat - September 17, 2009 03:00 AM (GMT)
That's awesome! Wonder if I will be able to find any more of his books at the thrift store... I love it when I can get good books for a bargain so I can buy tons!
104 pages today, and stopped at chapter twelve. I was wondering, is there any signifigance that chapter 9 started with 'At nine o'clock the following morning' and chapter ten started with 'Around nine o'clock'?
SparkDragon - September 20, 2009 11:20 PM (GMT)
I have no idea lol. your gonna have to google that one lol
BlackKat - September 22, 2009 03:26 AM (GMT)

Which Stephen King book do you think I should read next?

Lol. old thread. :D
Since my first delve into the lovely world of SK, one of my uncle's friends has been picking up any Stephen King books he finds at Goodwill for me. It's so wonderful
So far I have read Duma Key, Cell, Hearts in Atlantis, Dolores Claiborne, Needful Things, Misery, Stephen King Goes to the Movies, From a Buick 8, Lisey's Story, and I just finished Insomnia and am 149 pages into The Talisman by Stephen King + Peter Straub.
I also own and am yet to read Dreamcatcher, the complete and uncut edition of The Stand, and three books from the Dark Tower series: II: The Drawing of the Three, III: The Waste Lands, and V: Wolves of the Calla. I have 2 copies of The Waste Lands, and one is filled with lovely full-color illustrations. I can't wait to read the series, as I've met a lot of elements from them in the other SK books I've read so far, but I will save them until I've gotten ahold of as many of the others as possible. ;)
