can someone explain to me how in the fuck im supposed to use linux? i feel like a first-time parent

I don't know:

- how to install downloaded programs. it takes me to an archive... not sure how to just install the fuckin thing.

- how to use the general command or the synaptic package manager.

- how to use compatibility layers. for example, google tells me that i need "wine" to use windows/mac-only applications like itunes. where is wine? how do i use it?

- what program do you use for spriting?

In the same order as asked:

- Tutorial for downloading software on Linux. (This tutorial uses the terminal, so I suggest looking at this after familiarizing yourself with it).

There are usually some form of instructions within the downloaded archive, but they aren't always helpful.

- Synaptic Package Manager
Terminal/Command Line

- Download Wine - http://www.winehq.org/

- KolourPaint
KolourPaint is a simple program that is similar to ms paint, with some additional features such as transparency. On Ubuntu, this can be downloaded through the Ubuntu Software Center. It can be downloaded here as well: http://sourceforge.net/projects/kolourpaint/.


Hopefully this helps shed some light. I'll be lurking around if you have any more questions.

ya man it helped a lot. i get the basic picture of it now but goddamn its complicated as shit... and i thought i was ballin when i changed the wallpaper.

google told me that wine doesnt work well with itunes and it allows windows viruses to work on a linux machine. so i'll find a different way, i guess

[1] I used the link you provided for kolourpaint but it doesnt download at all; doesnt even appear in the download window. is it me, or them?
[2] my Dad is a cop and had his cop friend fix my computer (point being = he is very nosey). what are the chances he put tracking software in my linux?

It might be better to use something other than itunes, as it can't be installed without wine (as far as I know, anyway).

Those are instructions for ubuntu, so depending on the distribution of linux you have, it may or may not work. You may need to look for an alternative program if it doesn't work.

[2] - If he isn't familiar with linux, it would probably be difficult for him to do much to your computer, especially installing software that is meant for Windows or Macintosh computers.
