Vardas: Land of Eternal Fire

Terrain type: Vardas spans the entire continent of Ethyria, forming one massive island. The northern portion, closed off by the Eldarin mountain range, is a barren land scattered with volcanoes and molten rock. Few strongholds are located in this vast wasteland, with most nearer to the sea. However, Vardas' capital, Höllentor, is situated near the middle of this wasteland, on the side of Vardas' largest volcano.

The eastern portion of Ethyria is covered by the Sarade desert, with the Nerimn river cutting it nearly in half. Most cities in this region are located along this river, and near the forested areas of this region. Once belonging to the country of Saradas, the desert is now mainly inhabited by bandit groups, and Saradas' old capital Hein Tu Gol serves as a base for one of the larger groups.

The southern portion of Ethyria is mainly dominated by the Aerid plains, a home to many nomad and hunter groups. While it is the most populated region of Vardas, the population is severely decreased from when it belonged to Éridor. Many Éridorians were killed in the Battle of 1090, while many others fled to Iskoshia or Nerane. Yet, in recent years, the area has begun to grow in population again, and much of Vardas' economy is found in the mining cities of this region.

Government: Dictatorship - Vardas has been controlled by one central leader since its founding, with rule passing usually through bloodline or bloodshed. All key decisions are made by Vardas' current Lord, Richard Carinthas, whose lineage can be traced to 617 AD, when the Carinthas family seized control of Vardas from the Asolioh family.

History: From the early 600s AD until very recently, the Asolioh clan and the Carinthas clan feuded over who would control the throne of Vardas. For hundreds of years, power shifted back and forth between the clans, and many on both sides died in the process. The feud ended however, in 1086, when the two clans collided within Höllentor for power. The Asolioh family took control of the capital, killing every last member of the Carinthas family, or so they though.

Shathe Asolioh was chosen as Vardas' newest lord; the first female leader in three centuries. She ruled for nearly five years, until a lone surviving member of the Carinthas family led a coup in Éridor, eventually taking over the country. The army of Sevarin Carinthas, amassed seemingly form nowhere, and no combined with the might of Éridor's army, was too much for the Asolioh clan. Shathe and her brother Kain were executed, and the last surviving member of the Carinthas-Asolioh feud remained victorious upon Vardas' throne.

Not soon after the country of Saradas also fell to the might of Vardas, and Sevarin Carinthas had succeeded in conquering the entire continent of Ethyria. The Carinthas family has not been challenged since, and Sevarin's great great grandson, Richard Carinthas, currently rules as High Lord of Vardas.

Welcome to the headquarters for the Vardasian Military.

Breakdown: The Vardasian Military is a large and intricate group of soldiers dedicated to protecting their country from invading forces, whether they be from within or without.

While the whole army serves as a whole, there are different titles that the most powerful and most intelligent soldiers hold. These elite soldiers are the Vulcan Generals of the Vardasian Military, and are hand picked by Lord Richard Carinthas himself. The Vulcan Generals are the best of the best, and form Lord Carinthas' personal War Council; some of the very few who can claim they have the ear of the lord of the most powerful nation in Ethyria.

• Morthic - This title is the highest title available under Lord, and is given to the commander of all of Vardas' military forces. Though technically of the same rank as the other Vulcan Generals, the Morthic is the de facto second-in-command of Vardas.
• Brimlode - This title is given to the person in charge of homeland defenses. The Brimlode is specifically charged with protecting Vardas, and especially its capital Höllentor. Only he knows the full intricacy of the defense of the capital city, the well-positioned siege weapons in Vardas' many ports, and the many traps within the dreaded Gu'hrack Salt Flats bordering Saradas.
• Bazthal - This title belongs to the most powerful magister in all of Ethyria. The Bazthal serves as Vardas' strategist, and also as a leader in magical offensive weapons. The power and cunning of Vardas' Bazthal is renowned across Ethyria, and few have ever even claimed to rival him.
• Zelthon - This title is the title replaced most often, because it is given to the mightiest of Vardas' wyvern forces. The Zelthon commands Vardas' elite wyvern forces, who form the bulk of the Vardasian offense. Few have ever rivaled the might of Vardas' wyverns, and as such the title of Zelthon is greatly revered. Whoever holds this title must constantly prove himself worthy of it, and any unable to defeat the challenges to his title is replaced.
• Tuletam - This title is the only title given to more than one person, who serve as the personal bodyguards of Lord Carinthas. These soldiers are the most trusted of any soldier in Vardas, and are hand-selected by Lord Carinthas. The Tuletam are the most proficient soldiers in combat, and the most highly trained, and must always be able to fight to the death in protecting their lord's life. Any Tuletam who allows any manner of harm to fall to their lord is immediately executed for treason.

Name: Lord Richard Carinthas

History: Richard is the son of the late Aldaric Carinthas, the previous Lord of Vardas. Born in Vardas' capital city of Höllentor, Richard was raised by his mother Deborah, and groomed to be the future Lord of Vardas. While his father ruled peacefully towards the end of his life, Richard was given most of the moral code of his mother. Deborah wanted to raise her son as a noble and just man, fit for ruling the largest country in Ethyria. Richard took the throne at age 29, after his father suddenly became ill and died. Richard's rule has been one of great peace and prosperity in Vardas, he likes of which hasn't been seen for many centuries.

Name: Lady Deborah Corton Carinthas

Age: 70
History: Born to Andrew and Elise Corton, Deborah was raised on Rangus Lake in a small village. Her family did not have very much money, but Deborah had dreams greater than her small village. When she was old enough, she packed her things, said goodbye to her family, and left for the capital city.

While scrounging a living there, Deborah happened to meet a tall brown-haired man in passing. The two soon became friends, and after a few weeks, the man proposed to her. She rejected him, but the man continued to come back day after day. After his continual attempts, Deborah began to fall in love with the man, and she eventually said yes. Only after this did she learn that the man she had agreed to marry was none other than Aldaric Carinthas, the Prince of Vardas. The two were wed, and not long after Deborah became the Queen of the most powerful country in Ethyria. Deborah has lived in the capital city ever since, and currently serves as an adviser to her son.

Age: 19
History: Sylvia is the daughter of Richard Carinthas and Melissa Gale, and has lived her whole life within the walls of Höllentor. Sylvia was raised by her mother, alongside her two brothers, until Melissa was killed when Sylvia was 17. Since that time, Sylvia has become quite reckless, and is often seen with one of the men of the castle guard.
