Title: Character/Costume Design Competition
Description: Art Competition

frozendarkness - July 15, 2008 05:45 PM (GMT)
deadline is 12-08-2008 before midnight.

Final result should be a coloured piece
You should also include some sketches with different variations.

Its a character design topic but is based more around costume design.
So if you take a anonymous soldier as idea that is also cool.
You may also redesign characters, for example AK and the Merc have well established characters by now, but I would suggest not redoing your own character.

For style I was thinking in the direction of the GBA Fe's ,maybe even a bit more realistic. Big WoW shoulder pads are a big no no. Please also make sure that the outfit is practicle and can be made, you could include orthographic views.

If something is not clear just ask. And please post some WIPs of your work in this topic, this is great to get each other inspired it is a friendly competition afterall.

EDIT - Deadline Extended by 2 weeks

Aeorys Kirru - July 15, 2008 09:57 PM (GMT)
Sweet. I already know which character I'm doing. I've been revamping a lot of my old RoLaS OC designs lately, so I figured this would be a good time to finalize some of them.

Cool this exactly what I was talking about :)

I am taking a aproach. I don't what I am going to make so I just started to draw random characters that popped up in my head, I'll probably keep doing this untill I fiend something that works and then I'll start fleshing it out.

I made some costume designs with Asian and Eastern influences. And made a typical good guy and bad guy head.

At the moment I am taking a male mercenary kind of direction I guess.

Aeorys Kirru - July 16, 2008 08:35 AM (GMT)
Ooh, lots of detail. XD The evil face reminds me of the new Joker.

frozendarkness - July 16, 2008 08:43 AM (GMT)
I can inmagine that, I saw a picture of the new Joker yesterday. Think it stuck in my head or something. :P

aznswordmaster1 - July 16, 2008 06:10 PM (GMT)
Dang I better get started, I guess doing my request can wait a bit. *grabs something to doodle on*

frozendarkness - July 17, 2008 08:47 AM (GMT)
Here is a second batch still not happy with a base design, Although the old priest might be interesting.

The sword of the swordmaster guy looks a bit funky. _

I'll join this, I need more drawing practice anyway.

Aeorys Kirru - July 18, 2008 12:54 AM (GMT)
Meh, my pics were stretching the page, so I fixed them into links.

aznswordmaster1 - July 18, 2008 06:22 PM (GMT)
Alright here's my entry.
A pic of the face and part of the Design that goes with the next link.
Clothing design to go with the above link.

Aeorys Kirru - July 18, 2008 07:39 PM (GMT)
@ASM - Entry? You mean rough-draft, right? The contest rules state that the finished piece should be colored, with variable sketches on the side.

Eh, here's a spoiler WIP of my final image:

A lots of possible changes. Please don't mind the anatomical errors or lack of lower-body armor yet; I'd just like some feedback on the torso design so far.

aznswordmaster1 - July 18, 2008 08:33 PM (GMT)
Oh whoops, go me for not reading all the rules.

frozendarkness - July 19, 2008 11:36 AM (GMT)
Jup Aeo is correct, and you nailed the idea for the final sketch. Glad to see the guidelines where clear enough. Now I only need to decide what I want to make >:/

aznswordmaster1 - July 20, 2008 05:44 AM (GMT)
Ok Pencil version of the final draft, I'm gonna make it cleaner and color it once I can get to that point.

frozendarkness - July 20, 2008 08:58 AM (GMT)
Arg, I wanna start on my final piece too. But still don't have a sketch that like.
Here some new ideas. Some knights and I was experimenting with a plague mask.

Very close to a final design, now. This is another rough WIP. I'm trying my hardest to make it seem FE-styled.
As you'll notice, there are several differences. I like to add things to my WIPs, so what's seen here won't look identical to the finished product. I decided to make the breastplate visible and tried fixing the hand. It'll probably need more tweaking later, of course, but it's a WIP, so please bear with me. Her lower torso stuff has been scribbled in, though I realize now that her legs are FAR too long.
I'm thinking of keeping her nearer hand free and replacing the far hand with the sword.
Your thoughts?

@ FD - XD Your designs'll be the end of all of us. They're so damn detailed, and you STILL aren't happy?

frozendarkness - July 20, 2008 12:57 PM (GMT)
Just finished a new batch. Still searching.
And Aeo your right about the legs they need to be shorter, same might also be true for the neck. Love the whole elegant armour think you have going on.
I would also try the sword. A lance mightbe a bit too typical for this character design.

All that life drawing screwed my manga style so I am trying to do a bit more realistic work. Altough the female faces still look a bit funky :|

In the end I think I'll also settle for some more armour but I am going to experiment a bit more first. I hope more people will join in 4 people isn't really a big contest...

aznswordmaster1 - July 20, 2008 05:48 PM (GMT)
I don't like how this is looking like a 3 people contest so far... :( I have a bad feeling for me...

Aeorys Kirru - July 20, 2008 06:48 PM (GMT)
Well, her class is magic knight paladin. Alongside elemental and light magic, her melee weapons are swords, lances, and chakram. Later on, she dual-wields. I want to keep her as true to her original character as possible without having to compromise.

I'm a decent fan of function over fashion, so I deliberately designed her outfit to be a little more realistic and generic rather than unique and detailed. She's a member of an organized legion (of the Church), so naturally, there would be uniforms. I think it would be natural for a mounted unit to have a decent amount of armor. Taking into account that she's young and doesn't have a very high constitution, it felt best giving her light protection, focusing on hips and shoulders (which are more easily targeted on a riding unit) for heavier materials and leaving the rest covered more lightly. Using the FE cavalier designs helped in this. The white surcoat and short cape are standard-issue and bear the insignia of the Church of Elden. Her boots lack spurs because her familiar is her steed and thus allows her to communicate with him via telepathy.

@Arno - Your hips seem to be placed kind of low. The female on the right looks fine, but the one on the left just needs a bit of a mouth adjustment. LOL The girl on the right reminds me of Tagaki Nao: [link]

frozendarkness - July 21, 2008 09:24 AM (GMT)
Your right about the hips.
And for some wierd reason I can't view the link.

Well I made some more sketches and started with the final pose.

Think I will settle for a female paladin type of character. I am thinking of a few different leg designs at the moment, So I will print out this scan and work on that first so that I have multiple copy's in case I mess up.

What I got so far:
The stance I plan to use. It a slight side view and the sword will be contected on the (its) left hip. On a personal note, I don't usually sketch like this, but I'm pretty happy about how it turned out.
Armor pieces... I'll have to work more on these.
Weapon concepts, the actual blades aren't important, the handles are. Other stuff is on this too like sword bobbles and mini armor+ concept.

Aeorys Kirru - July 21, 2008 07:39 PM (GMT)
Ooh, nice stuff. Your proportions are pretty good considering your lack of guideline usage. I'm looking forward to the final result.

aznswordmaster1 - July 21, 2008 09:57 PM (GMT)
At this rate, I'm thinking about withdrawing my entry and replacing it with something that is more suited to what I work better with. To be honest, I ended up taking this a step or two seriously, and well you can say it has added stress to me when this should be for fun. I dunno if I will or not, but I'll make my decision based on what you guys think.

Aeorys Kirru - July 21, 2008 10:12 PM (GMT)
Meh, just screw around. It's design-based rather than ability-based.

frozendarkness - July 22, 2008 08:30 AM (GMT)
K, Still not sure what to use . Made 3 Varations so far

Could I have your opinions on what works best ? Maybe by the time I've read your replies I have already decided myself, but I hope your input helps. If you think mixed things from the 3 designs would look better please state the combination.

Cool to see Ragnarok has produced some work. Looks promising and I'm looking forward to the final image.

@ Anz, just do whats fun, for me this whole competition is just an excuse to draw every day and be creative. ( I need the practice )

And don't forget to tell your opinion about which sketch work best, also people not entering the contest please vote.

Aeorys Kirru - July 24, 2008 03:27 AM (GMT)
LOL How did I miss this post? XD
]: Halo's going to lose. Having two female paladins in a competition kind of makes things hard...especially when one person focuses on simplicity and the other details the heck out of things. XD

My verdict:
- It's a tie between [1] and [2] for me. [1] has a more masculine feeling, whereas [2] is slightly more feminine. Either way, I can't really say her torso armor is very...practical.

frozendarkness - July 24, 2008 09:49 AM (GMT)
I am fully aware of the practical issues. But I was sick and tired of drawing shoulder pads. And besides I have seen more unrealistic armour designs in games that needed to pass for full-armoured females. >_<

Hope I get some more opinions before I start drawing again.
But thanx to you I think I made up my mind, not going to say my temperory choice ofcourse since it might effect upcomming posts. ;)

I'm interested in this contest, though I don't really want to join now and squish in everything into five days or so. Around when will the next contest be?

byoxxyl - July 25, 2008 03:19 AM (GMT)
That's a really awesome drawing.

Sorry, those are really awesome drawings.

Just join anyway. d : We do it for the fun of interaction instead of competition. Even if you don't finish in time, we'd love to see your designs.

Aeorys Kirru - July 25, 2008 05:29 AM (GMT)
Seeing as I haven't posted a WIP in a few days...

I'm in the final stages of lineart. Painting should take me a day and a bit, and I intend to spam out tomorrow and Sunday. I'm kind of juggling this, Sety's contest, and my schoolwork all at once, so if my stuff gets shoddy (shoddier than usual, that is)... You know why.

Sword: point left, or point right?

byoxxyl - July 25, 2008 05:31 AM (GMT)
I think left would work better.

Aeorys Kirru - July 25, 2008 05:32 AM (GMT)
Well, the hand's going to change if I turn it right. I just need the idea before I finalize.

byoxxyl - July 25, 2008 05:36 AM (GMT)
I still think the left facing sword would work better.

Aeorys Kirru - July 25, 2008 09:24 AM (GMT)
...and my lineart's finished:

Nice job AK  looks great
Second weapon concept. I using the sheath at the bottom (fun fact, it's from an old sketch of a real sword I had) and I did better handles this time.
Clothing/Armor concept. Same armor, I just tried harder.
Full body sketch concept. What my entry should look like. I still need to clean it up a bit though. The head in the top corner started as practice in drawing heads, but I just had fun with it.

Aeorys Kirru - July 25, 2008 07:47 PM (GMT)
Ooh, interesting concepts. I like the detail. Do you need help with the face?

Nyck - July 25, 2008 09:50 PM (GMT)
I guess I'll submit a few sketches if I come up with something I like. I like the design AK, although I think the head is a bit too small. Also, what do you guys use for coloring? I got Painter a few months ago and it's pretty fun.

Aeorys Kirru - July 25, 2008 11:20 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the crit. Here's the updated version.

I use Photoshop for coloring. :]

Looks nice, I look forward to seeing the colored version. Your lineart is so clean. >_>

For my sorta-entry, sketched these just now:

I can't do practical outfits anymore. >_> And I still suck at taking a theme and sticking with it. Any suggestions on these, including anatomy?
