If it makes you feel any better, a few of them use different weapons after promotion.
But really, there have been sword-using lords primarily in the games before these, too. More axe and lance-using lords will come in due time, hopefully...

Swords tend to have more popularity all around. It's no surprise FE has so many Sword lords.

If you want to have magic user, dancing, healing, axe or lance lord, start hacking... it feels great to make tethys to use magics (DANCE, ELFIRE DANCE!).

That concept has already been utilized in two games, one both long before the GBA installments and another afterward.
