Hi Nick,
Not sure what the holey dollar is as I have grown up over here in NZ. Will look it up tho to get and idea of what its all about and the value of one. Is there any particular thing that makes them very desirable? I have looked around to find what NZ would have that would stack up to the holey dollar. I have found on an onlone auction site here and found a silver 1935 NZ Waitangi Crown coin, they were asking around NZ$5000 in very good- fine cond Any light you can shed about the elusive holey dollar would be great reading and would enlighten us who know very little about coins and their value... maybe a couple of pics too... The Holey Dollar is a very rare coin, propably the most rare in Australia. Theres prices reaching $90,000 AUD and its every detetorisits dream!
Now let me tell you some history about it. Due to the shortage of currency early in the Australian colony, a governor called Macquarie imported 40,000 spanish dollars and punched a hole in them during 1813 in New South Wales. The reason he punched a hole was to create 2 coins from the 1. The value was 15 pence for the centre and the outer was 5 shillings worth. cheers Attached Image (Click thumbnail to expand) ![]() |
