A lot of the stand-alone Blu-Ray players out there on the market currently are 'legacy' players, in that they were designed based on specifications created when the Blu-Ray format was launched.
Generally these will have 'BD Profile 1.0' as its player firmware.
The specifications for Blu-Ray movie discs moved on however, and new movies are being pressed to disc with compatability for 'BD Profile 2.0'. This allows some added features like a 'picture-in-picture commentary' instead of just a audio one. It also allows any Blu-Ray players which connect to the internet to access links to downloadable content on the movie discs, these can be java based games or cell phone ringtones I believe.
If you get a Blu-ray player which has internet connectivity, then the 'BD Profile' can be constantly updated as and when new versions arrive. If you get a 'Legacy' player, you're stuck with 'BD Profile 1.0'.
'Legacy' players will still play the movie content of new discs, they just wont access a lot of the extra content.
The PS3 is still a very cost effective solution to gaining a Blu-Ray player, and is firmware updateable.
