Release notes for Tribble reveal a new feature is coming... the ability to claim leadership of a fleet if the fleet leader doesn't log in for 30 days.

On the one hand, I'm glad STO is getting a feature like this. Fleets/Guilds need to be able to continue effectively if a key member goes dark.

On the other hand, I think we had better be very deliberate in how we address succession of leadership.

Anybody who knows me knows that I'm not in this for my ego (well, not completely wink.gif ). I've kept the big chair for myself to make sure the fleet continues to be run by the principles I set up.

But I don't want to leave the door open for our fleet to get shanghaied down the road because we invited the wrong person to be a member.

I think we need to start thinking about setting up some form of shared leadership and putting some regs in place to guide how we handle things under that model.

The actual quote from the Release Notes:

QUOTE
Fleets can now transfer leadership from their Leader if their Leader has not logged in within 30 days.

This is done through a "Claim Leadership" button that will appear on the bottom of the Fleet Roster for the highest ranking members of the Fleet that have been active within 30 days.

So... only high ranked members and only if the real leader has been gone at least a month? Not much to worry about.

If we can guarantee that you, Pr, and I all log in once a month every month as our highest ranked toons, sure. I'd assume logging in an alt doesn't count.

Given that the game's F2P, that's probably not unreasonable... but stuff happens. I'm not planning on dropping dead any time soon, mind you.

I guess I'm wondering about how to spread leadership around and do it right. If we decide how to handle it ahead of time, then there shouldn't be any surprises. Or if there are, at least we tried.

One thing I'd like to do on the honor system is to ask fleet members not to touch that button (if it shows up) without trying to contact senior leadership outside the game first. Like posting here, for example. Or emails. Or "other".

On the other side of the coin, senior leadership should try to let the fleet know when they're going to be offline for an extended period of time and make arrangements.

If I knew, for example, that I would be offline for more than a month for reasons outside my control I'd probably arrange to make one of Pr's or Marhawkman's characters the Leader and insure an orderly succession. Assuming that we stick with a One Leader system in the first place.

I'm still trying to find out what happens if the fleet has more than one Leader.

If the button does pop because the Leader is forced to be offline for some reason, who should be the one to push the button? How does the fleet decide that?

Maybe I am spending too much time thinking about this stuff. I can't help it. Blame my OCD tendencies biggrin.gif

Seeing as I'm back now, I'll be here at least once a month if not more-so.
