Lucien has been sent to the Human world by the High Council of Gatherers to close the rip between the worlds and to stem the growing desire for war between the Seelie and UnSeelie.

There is a girl living in Vinyard Groove who has the power to completely close off the rip and even close the doors--the power to decimate the Fae in their entirety. He has been ordered to find her and protect her from others who also know she is there.

He is searching for her and when he finds her she doesn't believe him, doesn't believe in magic or the Fae. She believes him kind of daft. So begins an uneasy friendship as she struggles to protect her, as well as struggled to figure out how she can close the Veil..or how he can do it.
