Because to every gamer, if it's one thing Sony had going for their brand of systems, it would definitely be gaming library. Despite a nearly non-existent collection of first and second party titles, their third party franchises are undeniably their number one trump card. Metal gear Solid, to Final Fantasy, and hell, why not GTA? The Playstation Brand have possibly the most plentiful of renowned gaming franchises and icons in the industry.
However, the Playstation 3 had a few major problems which would kill the very aspect that brought Sony success. As I said before a million times, Blu-ray is still a premature format. While it boasts some pretty damn strong power and capacity, those strengths are outweighed by it's lack of accessibility, which makes it really really expensive to market, especially video games.
Developers now have to dish out more money for Sony to publish their games, as Blu-ray is the only format Playstation 3 games are released in. While some have went along with the hefty price for their games, some of the key developers that fueled the Playstation and Playstation 2 drift away from Sony, and start giving attention to the other consoles, contributing to a loss of major exclusive titles and franchises on Sony's part.
Sony was aware of this the whole time, which gave one solution. If the game library is going to absolute crap, then why don't we put some features into our system so it will attract some publicity and sales? Thus, this is why the Playstation 3 is more of a supercomputer than an actual gaming system, today.
