OOC: Long overdue?! Yep. Sorry!

There was a distinct chill making its way along the castle hallways. They said this winter would be far worse than the last. Lavinia had never minded the cold. She wasn't a summer creature - her pale complexion despised the sun.

As a child, Lavinia used to spend all days outside in winter, ignoring the freeze and playing in the snow. As a young woman, she had no such freedoms. Still, she often took walks through the snow, enjoying the crunching sound her footsteps made and the way her hair was carried by the crisp, dry winds. The cold inside? She didn't mind it one bit.

How could she? There were more important things her attention could be directed to. This was her first week as the Queen's newest handmaiden. Her instruction was incomplete still. The handmaiden overseeing her, Feroza, was expecting Lavinia where all handmaidens to the Queen convened, so she hurried her step, pushing all other thoughts out of the way.

Her hair was done in appropriate fashion. Her clothes were without crinkle, clean and fresh. She had taken care to memorise the Queen's schedule. She was ready.

Through the door and into the room where she nodded her greeting to Feroza.

If she had ever known a warmer winter, it had been too long since Feroza had lived through one. The draft in the castle chambers was not precisely welcome, but expected, and she had long since learned to prepare for it accordingly. Stack the hearths high with firewood, throw on extra layers to the beds, pull out Her Majesty's woolen undergarments from storage, exchange the autumn gowns for those in the appropriate seasonal palette, and so on and so forth.

The only difference in routine this year was that Her Majesty's bed was now shared (or perhaps, she truly meant shared again), and that detail actually altered quite a lot about her situation.

She'd not managed to endear herself to the King since his coronation, and that meant more doors shutting in her face, more reminders of her actual place in things. That was fair -- Feroza wasn't very fond of His Majesty, either, nor his brother before him, although King Sven was at least more palatable than his predecessor. But it was frustrating to have her authority in the hierarchy of service reduced, simply because he (quite wisely) couldn't trust someone who was so close to the Queen.

She was Astraea's woman through and through, if any such possession could be applied, and that meant she could no longer wait in halls she once occupied as if she were little more than living decoration. Her reputation and status as the lead Queen's maid used to be valuable within these walls. Now it had become a barrier. It was almost as if she had to start all over again, building up new bonds of trust with the King's selected servants.

Nothing mirrored that feeling quite so much as actually having to train a new handmaiden. Feroza wasn't too familiar with the girl; she'd had no role in appointing servants, only in supervising them once they were selected. All that she'd known was from what she'd seen the first time they'd officially met a week ago. Lavinia Looke was a slip of a thing, willowy and slender, fresh-faced and so very young in every sense of the word. It was not a trait that Feroza envied.

But she had made it through her first week without being summarily dismissed, so that said something about her character, perhaps. And it was long enough for the pair to finally have a one-on-one training session, which meant Feroza could figure out first hand just how she'd managed to land such a coveted position in Her Majesty's good graces.

The sun was just barely lighting the tops of the castle's walls by the time they were meant to meet. Lavinia arrived just in time. At least she was punctual. Feroza, already standing at attention upon hearing the door start to open, smiled brightly, "Good morning, Miss Looke. We've a long day ahead of us."

"Yes, Miss Panahi," Lavinia dutifully agreed, with a friendly smile. Each day of the past week had been marked with Lavinia's curiosity towards Feroza. The people she associated herself with had to be known and categorised. She always had a sense of curiosity creeping up on her when she met someone new.

"What are we doing today?" she asked.

No time to delay. Feroza strode around the girl quickly, pushing through another set of doors leading to a long, narrow corridor. It was the back passage between the royal quarters and the servants', known only to those in their small entourage. The way was lit with small lamps, warded to illuminate as people walked through the space. "It's still early yet, so we mustn't disturb the King and Queen," she said in a hushed voice, as the sounds still echoed against stone, and the route took them around occupied rooms.

She started at the top of the agenda. "Breakfast for Her Majesty will be brought to her outer chambers. King Sven's attendants shall handle his meals, though I don't expect he'll take them with her." He rarely did, always with some excuse that he had other places to be, perhaps dining with his beloved children. But Feroza knew it was the Queen's decision, ultimately, and she didn't particularly care, either way.

Everything else she had to say to the girl seemed painfully obvious, but sparing any explicit detail was unwise. If something went wrong, it would be on her shoulders as the instructor. "We'll need to tidy the space and relight the hearth. The room ought to be warmed long before she's arrived." The Queen's rooms were well sealed, glass panes instead of paper or other cheap translucency, but they still leeched cold overnight. "While she's dining, provided she has no other immediate requests to make of us, we'll begin preparing her ensemble. Hair is just as important as wardrobe."

Feroza paused then, looking back at Lavinia or the first time since she'd begun to walk, "Do you know how to style hair?" She could see the young woman had piled her own neatly, in matching fashion to the rest of the maids, but that didn't necessarily indicate a broader knowledge.
