sorry, watched movie 8 times since i posted this comment, and at least 2 of the cars are 318's, my bad!!
-------------------- V8, HA, ALL I NEED IS A SIX CYLINDER, IT'LL GET BETTER MILAGE, BESIDES, WHAT WOULD I EVER NEED THE EXTRA POWER FOR ANYWAY?, it's not like i'm going to be chased down a desert highway by a rusty old peterbilt with a psycho killer driver!

I watched this clip to see what he was referring to....and maybe I'm crazy, and I've watched the movie MANY MANY times....but I don't ever recall seeing that scene where Mann runs over the tumbleweeds and has trouble controlling the Valiant...

Somebody else said that the car was a 318. Could tell by certain fender badges it had vs ones or none for a 6-cyl.
Doesn't matter. David Mann was just a wimp and no matter what kind of car he had he would still have had a problem. After all he couldn't even maintain 80-90 mph with Murder inc breathing down his neck. -------------------- ![]() Looked like a big complication to me! |

Most clips of the car you could definitely tell it was a slant "tic". Like after the railroad crossing scene, he back outta the weeds and then takes off. DEFINITELY a 6cyl. Stock with a 1bbl carb, they were completely GUTLESS. If he had been driving a 318 car he could have easily out run the truck. That wouldn't have made a good movie, so the 6cyl was a good choice.
Yes the suspension on 70's cars were MUSHY to say the least. My '64 Galaxies and '69 F100 are JOYS to keep going in a straigh line. If you actually have the chance to drive a 40 yr old car and compare to todays cars you will see why he had problems keeping it under control(try a set of BIAS PLY tires to boot). -------------------- "You can't take me on the grade!"

The first car I ever bought was a yellow 1970 Plymount valient with the 225 slant six when I was 17 back in 1980. The engine had a spun rod bering so the car lot sold it to me for 400 bucks. I had to dirve it home about 20 miles and the engine knocked so lound I couldn't even hear myself thing. Got it home though and my brother rebuilt the engine, carberator and repainte dit for me. The inside was like new so after all the work it looked like a new car again. I still remember the firing order of the 225, 1-5-3-6-2-4. Not sure if that is the same for the smaller 170 slant six or not. One thing though the slant six was an awesome engine, very durable.
