.personality: Mateo is reckless in the best sense of the word, at least in his opinon. Diagnosed with ADHD at the age of six, Mateo would rather ask forgiveness than permission and he’s known for not thinking things through even partially. He likes anything that has the potential to go fast, anything that could lead to some kind of natural high and anything that doesn’t involve him having to focus or sit too much. Being outside is a natural bonus that he will always gladly take.

Because of this he has issues in school. He likes to see results now and not later, and even when the results are a minute later, sometimes he’s already lost focus. Things that could take the average student half an hour to do could take Mateo up to two and a half hours to do simply because he keeps wondering off or day dreaming or just because he flat out doesn’t understand what they’re supposed to be doing. Like a handful of people who have ADHD, the usual medication started to wear off after the first three years; Mateo now takes a series of different pills throughout the day to make things easier during the everyday. He also has to do psychosocial therapy to help focus himself. He isn’t the best at it, but his friends and family help.

One thing that seems to help him maintain focus is listening to music. He can’t listen to music during class of course – at least not without getting in trouble – but in passing times and lunch he can usually be found with an ear bud sticking out of his ear. The best songs are the ones with upbeat tempos. A downside is that listening to music so much can lead to him bursting into song in the halls, which can earn him more than a few weird looks, but he doesn’t care. People already think he’s weird so why not just go all out and have fun while doing it?

The one thing Mateo can do without fear of failing or being laughed at is sports. He loves them, almost every single one of them. Anything that can keep his attention and give him something to do is awesome for him. He loves playing it, loves watching it when he can keep focus; he just loves everything about them. Like many sport stars, Mateo has a good luck charm. His is a helmet his mother gave him when he started middle school. It’s nothing fancy, just a solid black helmet that covers his head, but he considers it lucky. Mateo almost always has it on or around his person and at times he pulls it out at seemingly random times. But it’s never random. He only wears it when he needs to because otherwise it wouldn’t be lucky anymore and there’s no use in having a lucky helmet that isn’t lucky. It’s special. It’s a gift from his mother and he loves it the most.

With Mateo being so rambunctious all the time, he doesn’t make many lasting friends. When he does make friends, he tends to latch onto them. They’re special and nice and kind and he never wants to leave them because they’re awesome and why can’t he keep them forever? He wants to keep them forever. He’s got a hard time letting go of people who seem to want to stick around him because it honestly doesn’t happen that much.

.history: Born on July 11, Mateo was the second son born to Bonita and Carlos Juarez. He was a momma’s boy from the day he learned to open his eyes and for the first year of his life it was a small miracle if he would let anybody but Bonita hold him without crying. His older brother wasn’t a fan of the crying bundle at first, especially with all the usual attention he received being given to the new baby, but after a few years the two boys fell into an easy relationship.

Their mother was a big believer in the Catholic faith and both boys were raised accordingly. Despite everything she still believed that her power was a gift from God and she taught her sons that if they had powers, they also would be a gift from God. Mateo didn’t believe it, not like his mother did, but simply because God and religion wasn’t something he’d ever thought of. Antonio picked it up just as strongly as their mother however, and there were many nights where the small family would curl up on the couch and read through the bible together.

Mateo made few friends throughout the year, spending the majority of his time with the next door neighbor and kids he met at his psychosocial therapy. He was always a hit there, with some clever thing to say or a new trick to show off, especially after his own power developed. Animal mimicry. Almost like being the animal, but not quite, but still just as entertaining. Mateo took full advantage of his power.

During Mateo’s eighth grade year, Bonita decided that she wanted Mateo to go to a private school in the middle of nowhere Ohio for high school. She didn’t offer any explanation or excuse, at least to Mateo, but there must have been a good one because Carlos agreed to it.

Mateo isn’t looking forward to high school at Dalton at all. It’s too far away from his family, from his mother, and he hates it because Antonio didn’t have to go to Ohio, wasn’t leaving Texas for college and it wasn’t fair. But his mother said it was right and Mateo was still a momma’s boy who didn’t want to disappoint his mother so he was going.
