Vampires
Vampires used to the stuff of myth and legend until they 'came out of the coffin' four years ago. Now, they're the public face of the supernatural world. Vampires are pale and cold, much like a corpse, and can be seen in photographs and mirrors. Some vampires have figured out tricks to make them pass as humans. Many vampires are attempting to 'mainstream', or rather live peacefully amongst humans by drinking only synthetic blood. Feeding on humans is still legal, provided it is done between two consenting adults. When a human and vampire exchange blood, they can for a blood bond in which each person is aware of the others feelings. Their fangs only come out when they're thirsty, aroused or angry. Vampires can be killed by being staked through the heart, exposed to sunlight, burnt and beheading. Silver can severely burn them, although it is not fatal. The only disease that can affect them is a mutation of the hepatitis pathogen called Hep D. Hep D only weakens them and can only be passed from an infected human to a vampire.
Although vampires are attempting to live amongst humans, they remain very secretive about their government. Vampires have divided the US into multiple kingdoms, each ruled by a king or queen. These kingdoms are based around state lines, save for the few 'city kingdoms' (namely New York and Los Angeles). Each of these kingdoms are divided further into areas, which are controlled by sherriffs who owe their allegiance to the monarch. Vampires must also obey any command their maker gives them.
Shifters & Weres
Shifters and weres are supernatural creatures who can change their shape into that of an animal. The main difference between shifters and weres is that shifters can change into any animal they have seen while weres can turn into one specific animal. Shapechanging is a heritary condition which can be passed on by either parent. All shapechangers experience their first shift at puberty. Weres are unique among shapechangers in that they are forced to shift during the full moon. Shifters can change at will, provided they have seen the animal they are shifting into. A shifter can be born to either two shifters or a mixed couple, but never to a human couple. Weres born of two were parents are referred to as pure weres and can shift outside of the full moon, where weres born to a mixed couple can only shift during a full moon. You can be turned into a shifter or were by being bitten multiple times by a shifter or were, even then the bitten person only turns into a hybrid man-beast similar to the classic werewolf. Shapechangers can be turned into vampires, although they lose all their shifting abilities. All shapechangers have enhanced senses in human form.
Witches & Wiccans
Witches and wiccans are humans who practice magic and can cast spells. The only real difference between witches and wiccans is that witches practice magic without following the pagan religion of Wicca. In order to practice magic, you do not need to be a wiccan, although you can do both. Witches and wiccans can be men or women. You have to be taught magic in order to cast spells. Powerful or experienced witches become mentors to the young ones. Most witches and wiccans belong to a coven who help and protect each other. These covens will often gather together to help increase the power of a spell.
Fairies
Fairies are rare supernatural beings, having been thought extinct for millenia. Also known as fae, pure fairies haven't been seen en masse in the human world since the fall of the Roman empire. However, solitary fae have crossed into the human world on occasion to mate with humans. Fairies look like normal humans although they often seem more attractive than normal humans. All fairies have the ability to issue shock of light from their hands and move metals without touching them. The fae are very long lived, some of them claiming to be many millenia old. Part-fae are common in some parts of the world, all of them possessing a degree of the pure fae's abilities. Pure fairies are deathly allergic to lemon and iron. Part fae can handle lemons without repurcussions, although part fae who have one human parent and one fae parent are mildly allergic to iron.
Humans
Humans are your average folks, just trying to make a living. If you don't know what a human is by now, there is something seriously wrong with you.
Fangbangers - Fangbangers are humans obsessed with vampires, almost to the point of wanting to be them. Their favourite activities are usually being fed on by vampires or having sex with them. Despite what many believe, they're not always goths and many times they can look so... ordinary that their little kink is a shock to most. Fangbangers will always be found where vampires are after dark.
The Fellowship of the Sun - The Fellowship are an anti-vampire church who preach that vampires are creatures of the devil. Founded by the deceased Reverend Theodore Newlin. Now run by his son Steve and wife Sarah, the church is steadily becoming more militant. Up until recently, the church has only had influence down south, but it is slowly starting to spread across the country.
