The tale of this rose is long and sorted indeed. Settle in for the tale of how Belle, Queen of Westmarsh gained her power.

Long ago, an elderly woman arrived at a pristine castle of a young prince. Cold and hungry, she requested shelter at the castle, offering a rose in return. Disgusted by the woman’s haggard appearance, the prince refused her. Ignoring the woman’s caution not to judge by appearances, the prince shut the door on her.

Discarding her disguise, the elderly woman became a beautiful sorceress. Stunned by her beauty, the prince invited her in, apologizing for his rudeness. However the sorceress refused him, having witnessed his lack of compassion. To teach the young prince a lesson, she cast a powerful spell over him and the castle. The beautiful castle and grounds turned into a forbidding place. The prince himself turned into a hideous beast, becoming the beast he is today.

With the spell complete, the sorceress told him that his curse would be broken by true love. Only when the Beast felt love for another and received love in return would he be freed from his hideous form. However, the Beast only had until the last petal fell from the rose to break the curse, or he would remain a monster forever.

Revolted by his new form, the Beast hid within his castle, lost in despair and pity. Years past as petals gradually withered and fell. Then one day a young woman arrived, bringing hope for salvation.

Gradually the Beast and Belle became friends. In an effort to befriend her further, the Beast gave Belle free access to the library. This fateful choice set many events in motion.

Belle spent long hours in the library, devouring the stories held within books. By chance, she discovered some spellbooks hidden in the vast library. Intrigued by her discovery, Belle began to search for a way to break the Beast’s curse. She began with simple spells and gradually moving to more advanced magic. Eventually Belle tamed two ravens to respond to her will.

Pleased with her growing power, Belle set her mind towards finally freeing the Beast. First, she placed a freezing spell over the rose, slowing its loss of petals. Having delayed the arrival of the curse’s end, Belle doubled her efforts to break the curse. Luck led her to stumble upon the answer which lay in the pages of a black leather bound book.

As the Beast slumbered late one night, Belle ventured into the west wing of the castle. There she began to cast the spell over the red rose. From the book of dark magic, Belle cast a reversal spell over the rose; the fateful mistake which began to twist her.

Dark magic is a fickle art, liable to turn on even an experienced sorcerer. Instead of breaking the curse as intended, the reversal spell twisted the purpose of Belle’s spell. The red rose’s curse had been intended to teach the Beast humanity, but now it began to tear away Belle’s humanity. The rose turned black, absorbing the dark magic. Lacking proper training, Belle was unshielded from the effects of the spell. The magic corrupted her, turning the goodness in her soul to darkness.

As she worked her magic, the castle was attacked by villagers. They came armed with any weapon they could lay hands on, having learned about the Beast from her father who had been released in exchange for her. With her magic complete, Belle hurried to find the Beast. She arrived too late however, as a dagger was plunged into the Beast.

Going to his side, she held him close as he died. Rather then whisper the words that would break the spell, Belle began to whisper another spell. The strange magic was whispered to her by a strange voice, but she trusted it blindly. Using the dagger which had killed the Beast, she cut open her palm. The performance of blood magic sealed her fate, corrupting her further. Returned to life and health, the Beast rose but the spell remained unbroken. Inspired now, Belle had the knowledge to begin building her army.

The rose is now Belle’s source of magic as it feeds her power from the original sorceress. Its corruption and influence sway her to do terrible things, despite her once good nature. Despite her resentment towards the rose, Belle has it protected day and night, fearful of what she will become if it is destroyed.

Now, the fate of both the Beast and Belle are tied to the rose. As the last rose petal falls, they will be doomed to remain as the monsters they have become; unless true love can save them both…
