REALLY good idea.

I have very little programming experience, but I don't hink implementation schould be that difficult. Only the prices may be a bit high, as the others already stated.

Wow, cool idea.

I have a little constructive criticism, though. ^_^

Firstly, however much I hate to say this (I have Construction too), I think the extra ship with Construction has to go. The Construction is already one of, if not the strongest bonus resource there is. Adding the possibility of an extra 4 income for those with Construction will completely tip the scale. Nations will need it in order to be on the same level as others.

Another thing, the upkeep costs should start lower, or the infrastructure requirements should start higher. Currently a nation would need ~5700 citizens in order to make a profit with the Barge. Small nations will seriously hurt themselves. :)

Other than that, I like it very much.

The problem is, when you have a harbor, it's implicit that these kinds of ships are already running here. Magically having a harbor doesn't get resources magically in your nation, right?

if you have a harbour, but no own ships, the ressources would be transported by independent transportation companies. I you have own ships, you don't have to pay those guys -> more money for you.

Upkeep is too high for the smaller ships and needs rebalancing in my opinion. Assuming a 28% tax rate and not counting income bonuses the breakeven points are:

Barge: $800.00 upkeep / $0.14 tax per person = 5715 citizens
Coastal trading vessels: $1,000.00 upkeep / $0.28 tax per person = 3572 citizens
Roll-on/roll-off ships: $2,000.00 upkeep / $0.42 tax per person = 4726 citizens
Reefer ship: $3,500.00 upkeep / $0.56 tax per person = 6250 citizens
Tankers: $5,000.00 upkeep / $0.70 tax per person = 7143 citizens
Container ships: $7,000.00 upkeep / $0.84 tax per person = 8334 citizens
Bulk carriers: $10,000.00 upkeep / $1.12 tax per person = 8928 citizens

As you can see from the chart above, the Barge is useless, by the time you have enough people to break even you can get Roll-on/roll-off ships; the upkeep should be lowered to about $500.00 or less.

I tried to edit a bit in the upkeep, and raised the requirement to 300 infra for the barge. :)
What would you suggest for the prices, requirements & upkeeps, you sound to be better to CN-Calculating :P ;)

The new Break even population counts are as follows:

Barge: $400.00 upkeep / $0.14 tax per person = 2858 citizens
Coastal trading vessels: $800.00 upkeep / $0.28 tax per person = 2858 citizens
Roll-on/roll-off ships: $1,000.00 upkeep / $0.42 tax per person = 2380 citizens
Reefer ship: $2,000.00 upkeep / $0.56 tax per person = 3572 citizens
Tankers: $3,000.00 upkeep / $0.70 tax per person = 4286 citizens
Container ships: $5,000.00 upkeep / $0.84 tax per person = 5953 citizens
Bulk carriers: $7,000.00 upkeep / $1.12 tax per person = 6250 citizens

Now to look at the payoff time and daily income. How long, at the required infra, assuming 9 people per level, does it take for the ship to pay for itself?

Barge:
2,700 citizens * $0.14 tax per person - $400.00 upkeep = -$22.00 daily income
$20,000 cost / -$22.00 = Never paid off
Coastal trading vessels:
3,600 citizens * $0.28 tax per person - $800.00 upkeep = $208.00 daily income
$40,000.00 cost / $208.00 = 193 days
Roll-on/roll-off ships:
5,400 citizens * $0.42 tax per person - $1,000.00 = $1,268.00 daily income
$60,000.00 cost / $1,268.00 = 47 days
Reefer ship:
7,200 citizens * $0.56 tax per person - $2,000.00 upkeep = $2,032.00 daily income
$80,000.00 cost / $2,032.00 = 40 days
Tankers:
10,800 citizens * $0.70 tax per person - $3,000.00 upkeep = $4,560.00 daily income
$120,000 cost / $4,560.00 = 27 days
Container ships:
16,200 citizens * $0.84 tax per person - $5,000.00 upkeep = $8,608.00 daily income
$180,000 cost / $8,608.00 = 21 days
Bulk carriers:
22,500 citizens * $1.12 tax per person - $7,000.00 upkeep = $18,200.00 daily income
$250,000 cost / $18,200.00 = 14 days

The upkeep on the barge is still too high. And, I think the tech requirements are way too high, they should be 1/4 what they are now.

QUOTE (Comrade Philip @ Apr 29 2007, 03:16 PM)
I got an idea for improving the improvement Harbor

If you have a harbor, you can buy Mercheant ships from small boats, to BIG freighters.
If your tradepartner also posseses a harbor, your ships will be able to transport the resources faster and more effective. And will be able to earn the bonuses stated below.

Ships cannot be destroyed in war, but youl loose them all if you destroy the Harbor.

You can buy a max of 5 ships.

Following ships can be bought:

(Posted Image)
Barge - Cost 20,000$ Pr. Ship.
Requires 300 infra & 20 Tech.
Gives + 0,50 $ Citizen income pr. Ship.
Upkeep cost - 400$ pr. Ship.
A barge is a flat-bottomed boat, built mainly for river and canal transport of heavy goods. Most barges are not self-propelled and need to be moved by tugboats towing or towboats pushing them. Barges on canals (towed by draft animals on an adjacent towpath) contended with the railway in the early industrial revolution but were outcompeted in the carriage of high value items due to the higher speed, falling costs, and route flexibility of rail transport.

(Posted Image)
Coastal trading vessels - Cost 40,000$ Pr. Ship.
Requires 400 infra & 40 tech.
Gives + 1 $ Citizen income pr. Ship.
Upkeep cost - 800$ pr. Ship.
Coastal trading vessels, also known as coasters, are shallow-hulled ships used for trade between locations on the same island or continent. Their shallow hulls mean that they can get through reefs where sea-going ships usually cannot (sea-going ships have a very deep hull for supplies and trade etc.).

(Posted Image)
Roll-on/roll-off ships - Cost 60,000$ Pr. Ship.
Requires 600 infra & 60 tech.
Gives 1,5 $ Citizen income pr. Ship.
Upkeep cost - 1000$ pr. Ship.
Roll-on/roll-off ships are cargo ships designed to carry wheeled cargo such as automobiles, trailers or railway carriages. RORO vessels have built-in ramps which allow the cargo to be efficiently "rolled on" and "rolled off" the vessel when in port. While smaller ferries that operate across rivers and other short distances still often have built-in ramps, the term RORO is generally reserved for larger ocean-going vessels.

(Posted Image)
Reefer ship - Cost 80,000$ Pr. Ship.
Requires 800 infra & 80 tech + 1 Factory.
Gives 2 $ Citizen income pr. Ship
Upkeep cost - 2000$ pr. Ship.
Reefer ships are cargo ships typically used to transport perishable commodities which require temperature-controlled transportation, mostly fruits, meat, fish, vegetables, dairy products and other foodstuffs.

(Posted Image)
Tankers - 120,000$ Pr. Ship.
Requires 1200 infra & 120 tech. + 3 Factories.
Gives 2,5$ Citizen income pr. Ship.
Upkeep cost - 3000$ pr. Ship.
Tankers are cargo ships for the transport of fluids, such as crude oil, petroleum products, liquefied petroleum gas, liquefied natural gas and chemicals, also vegetable oils, wine and other food - the tanker sector comprises one third of the world tonnage.

(Posted Image)
Container ships - 180,000 $ Pr. Ship.
Requires 1800 infra & 250 Tech. + a Foreign Ministry & 4 Factories.
Gives 3$ Citizens Income pr. Ship.
Upkeep cost - 5000$ pr. Ship.
Container ships are cargo ships that carry all of their load in truck-size containers, in a technique called containerization. They form a common means of commercial intermodal freight transport. Informally known as "box boats," they carry the majority of the world's dry cargo. Most container ships are propelled by diesel engines, and have crews of between 20 and 40 people. They generally have a large accommodation block at the stern, directly above the engine room. Container ships now carry up to 15,000 containers on a voyage.

(Posted Image)
Bulk carriers - 250,000 $ Pr. Ship.
Requires 2500 infra & 400 Tech. + a Foreign Ministry & 5 Factories
Gives 4$ Citizens income pr. Ship.
Upkeep cost - 7000$ pr. Ship.
Bulk carriers are cargo ships used to transport bulk cargo items such as ore or food staples (rice, grain, etc.) and similar cargo. It can be recognized by the large box-like hatches on its deck, designed to slide outboard for loading. A bulk carrier could be either dry or wet. Most lakes are too small to accommodate bulk ships, but a large fleet of lake freighters has been plying the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway of North America for over a century.

Since there's a barge, how much is the tugboat?
