Well, seems new posts are on hiatus for a while. I won't let that deter me: I'll move this to it's own thread when the ability to do so happens again.

CN Sanctioned Stats Depot, Special Edition: Your Alliance Affiliation and You!
Welcome to another installment of CN Sanctioned Stats Depot: Special Edition.
Today's topic is a case study in how three major alliances have dealt with changing their alliance affiliation: CDS (from 'Coalition of Dark States' to 'Coalition of Defensive States'), GOLD ('GOLD' to 'Global Organization for Liberty and Defense') and ONOS ('ONOS' to 'Organized Nations Of Superiority').
ONOS and GOLD changed affiliations because they were Sanctioned during the audit on April 15th 2007. CDS' change in affiliation is a mystery to me. I suppose they didn't feel right being in the White Trading Sphere with the word 'Dark' in their name.
Without further ado, here are charts detailing the transition for each of the three alliances. The light-red colored background indicates 'not yet at 90% pre-change NS'. Light-green means 'not yet at 100% pre-change NS'. Light-blue is the default background.

Next up, we have charts of each alliance's NS and Nation count over the same range. The vertical red line is the day before the transition begins (the starting blocks, if you will). The light-green line is the first day past 90% pre-switch NS, and the dark-green line is the first day past 100% pre-switch NS. Some astute observers
may notice a big freaking gap in the GOLD and ONOS charts. That's a 'my bad' -- during the GW3 winddown hullabaloo I managed to miss recording one day of data for them. I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for those meddlesome kids. (

Finally, we have some comparative graphs:

Conclusions:
Well, it looks like there's a reason CDS was on it's way out, while GOLD and ONOS are on their way in. Note that the end of CDS' transition is the beginning of GW3; so in total, CDS has only ever spent one day over their pre-switch NS (they've never recaptured their pre-switch nation count).
ONOS has taken a few days longer than GOLD to do their switch, and have yet to hit their nation count from before sanctioning. In any case, both hit 100% of their pre-switch NS within one week. GOLD's 5-days is particularly impressive.
Of course, this doesn't capture the effects of nations leaving and joining the alliances in question. Some related phenomenon undoubtedly contributed to what we see here:
1) If you're unaligned, it's nice to hide under a badass' coattails. Someone with the Alliance Affiliation of 'Melvin Eugene von Punymeier' is more likely to suffer rogue attacks than someone with the AA of 'GOONS', 'FAN' or, now, 'ONOS' or 'GOLD'.
2) Being sanctioned is hawt. I bet GOLD and ONOS were (figuratively) fighting them off with a stick. Some folks in a hurry probably even set their AA before being formally admitted (the horror!)
3) A lot of very large alliances ceased to exist or effectively ceased to exist around the time of this audit. It wouldn't be surprising to know that a non-trivial number of newly homeless, POW or simply fed-up nations decided to join someone who is sanctioned, but who didn't help feed them their own spleen in the war just ending. As an aside, I suspect this trend also helped IRON and GPA, as well as other established but uninvolved and unsanctioned alliances.
4) CDS apparently had to deal with some splinter groups during their switch. Of course, that doesn't bode well for an alliance. Similarly, their only day over 100% pre-switch probably was helped by their pre-war run up against GOONS. I imagine a few nations decided to hop into the HMS CDS' lifeboats right around the time those marching orders came down and began to be put into effect. And what an effect!
What can we divine from this information?
For ONOS and GOLD, a vastly larger percentage of both nations and nation strength were (at the time of the switch) concentrated in active, responsive members than was true for CDS. As we all know; active, responsive member nations are preferable to the alternative. While other alliances may not be able to establish exactly how many of their members are responsive in a hurry, GOLD and ONOS have a pretty good idea. For whatever time into the future these pointers are valid, they have that extra bit of assurance as to their actual capabilities.

Hope that was educational and/or a useful diversion.
Enjoy. :v:
