Is it possible to back up the old/current database and move it to the new forum?

It would be a shame to lose all those CN historical documents.

I thought that it would cost too much. It's sad to see all these threads go though. We could keep this forum as kind of an archive.

Correct.

Admin said it was going to cost him $2000 to transfer everything over.

What? bullcrap its a forum database. it should be a simple case of saving a backup to a tar or what ever and then restoreing the back up into the new forum. Unless invision does something truely screwy for their free baords.

No, it's not bullcrap and it's not that simple. InvisionFree charges by posts for transfers. This forum obviously has alot of posts. The admin team has already said this forum will more than likely stay as a read only archive.

Well... If there's 833k posts and it costs him $2k to transfer it all, that comes out to about $.0025. If you were to remove all of the alliance forums (164k posts), all of the spam and games (30k posts) and all of the water cooler (146k) that takes out 340k posts. At $.0025 a post that removes $850 from the costs.

Now he's left with $1150. That seems a little more managable... ROFLMAO

Besides... Who needs Alliances, Spam, or the Water Cooler... <slap> <doh>

i dont see the big deal, start fresh. Its not like he world is going to end. Beside it makes it easier for the Admin/Mod team they dont have to be finding bugs and such the would occur from the transfer.

This game is doing great also thanks to its history. History is everything. Perhaps it is possible to use this as a 'read-only' archive, without anyone is doing anything about it anymore. Why transferring it to a new forum if it can also stay here? I think nobody has a problem and it is fun actually to search for some old topics.

It took us (GOONS) $30 to get our database from InvisionFree, and we only had 10k posts. It'd cost about $2700 to get this database transferred.

So invision has locked out the 'backup database' feature in the admin CP? Because thats all you'd need. It would even be a small file if compressed corerctly.
