In short, a cult (formed by Jim Jones who stayed as leader) formed a community in Guyana that seemed utopian but had darker secrets of possible abuse. On November 18, 1978 a US senator (Leo Ryan) visited the community and when he tried to leave many members tried to leave also, this made the leader feel betrayed. On the runway a group of gunmen (probably ordered by the leader) opened fire on the plane, killing the senator and other leaving members. It is unknown why, but the leader decided all the members had to commit suicide. Most of the members were forced to commit suicide by drinking poisoned Kool Aid but some were shot. The leader committed suicide also. 913 people died in the mass "suicide".

It is disputed whether the FBI played a part in the tragedy.

yeah, I saw a whole show of Jonestown and the cult a couple months back on the History Channel, he was actually a normal person until he moved to "Jonestown" and started taking a huge amount of drugs. Also I think it is funny that he used to be strictly "anti-communist" and then used Socialism-Communism to form his "successful" cult...

ROFLMAO ! they believe a spaceship will get them when they die! WTF?

Kevin the Great - August 23, 2007 06:17 PM (GMT)
Yeah Jonestown was pretty %@#*ed up, what with the white nights and the flavor-aid and all that.

Deniz Baykal - August 23, 2007 06:38 PM (GMT)
This explains why he made Jonestown,

Up to $65,000 in monthly welfare payments to Jonestown residents were appropriated by Jones, whose own wealth was estimated to be at least $26 million

well look at that, someone wanted to get rich... too bad for him he took to many drugs and ended up killing himself as well...

There doesn't seem to be a debate, this is staying here.

ROFLMAO Well who would be advocating Jonestown?

Moneke - August 24, 2007 09:08 AM (GMT)
no im saying "Was the FBI involved?" and other conspiracies surrounding it

FlameDarkfire - August 24, 2007 10:14 AM (GMT)
Why would the FBI get involved? People that stupid always end up killing themselves and why would the FBI want to assassinate a senator?

I kinda doubt it. I think that the Jonestown folks were just plain old crazy.

Jones knew if any of his followers got out of the compound, the army was going to come and waste him. He was fully aware he was running a cult scam and he had the safeguards in place to make sure he wouldn't go to prison.

lol so killing himself is a safeguard? Well I guess it is better than life in prison... although I think he would have been executed anyway, but what I hate is he forced his people to kill themselves as well... many didn't want to die...

Considering where he was, death on his own terms was preferable to prison.

Had he managed to kill the whole return party without anyone getting away, he would've had a better time of it. Even so, what he pulled when he killed the senator was the final nail in the coffin, and he knew it.

Kevin the Great - August 24, 2007 01:43 PM (GMT)
Point is, there was no Jonestown conspiracy. Now if you wanna talk conspiracy, we can talk Waco. That's so obvious and blundering that conspiracy really dosn't describe it.....

I'm thinking 'Chinese Fire Drill' is a more fitting description.

Waco was amazing proof that our government has no business trying to enforce the law.

Why did he kill him anyway? he could have just tried to make Jonestown look like a paradise... or was he afraid the ones who left are going to tell others the horrible treatment in Jonestown?

Kevin the Great - August 24, 2007 02:06 PM (GMT)
Well, considering he was freaked out on coke at the time, I don't think he was thinking too rationally.

That is what I was thinking as well... why did he begin taking so many drugs?! He was an idiot because of it...
