Rose is the youngest of An-mei and George Hsu’s three daughters, and has lived in an almost constant state of confusion. Easily overwhelmed by the choices one has to make in day to day life, Rose has always allowed her husband Ted to make all the decisions and never stood up for herself. Eventually their marriage begins to deteriorate and Ted asks for a divorce so he can rid himself of Rose and take the house. Has a very fatalistic, passive attitude. Because she believed that she was “destined” to marry a vulgar family friend, she did nothing to seriously prevent the marriage. When he died, she allowed Clifford St. Clair to marry her because she sensed that he was her destiny as well. For years she let Clifford mistranslate her broken English. When she realizes that she has passed on her passivism to her daughter, Ying-ying comes to realize her own weakness and decides

Lena St. Clair
Lena is the only child of Ying-ying and Clifford St. Clair. When she married Harold Livotny, Lena unwittingly began to follow her mother’s passive example, believing herself incapable of taking control of her life.
