Title: Global Radiation
admin - July 12, 2006 05:58 PM (GMT)
Global Radiation is a simple little addition to the game that should have a major impact on how nuclear weapons are used within the game; in particular it should make the use of nukes more realistic. As suggested by RMMP in
this thread the global radiation level works as follows:
The game counts the number of nations hit with nuclear weapons within the past 30 days and then takes 2% of the total count and adds it to EVERY nation’s environment as an environment penalty. If there are 50 nations attacked with nuclear weapons in the past 30 days EVERY nation will receive a +1 environment penalty. The current Global Radiation value, which is the actual value added as the environment penalty, can be found on your nation information screen. If the Global Radiation level falls below .20 (which means 10 nuclear attacks or less per month) EVERY nation will receive +1 happiness. The
World Demographics screen will provide information as to how many nations have been attacked with nuclear weapons in the past 30 days. The cap on global radiation is 4.
Update 01/30/07: Global Radiation has been taken out of CN standard. It will remain in CNT as before.

Darn it! Lost my precious five stars!
Ah well, Global Radiation certainly does make nukes a much more serious weapon. I may not like it, but certainly an interesting addition to the game.

Well i always enjoy the little additions! But it should be a bigger happines level if the radiation is low methinks. <clap> ;)
admin - July 12, 2006 06:03 PM (GMT)
If the radiation is low, not only do you get the free +1 happiness but your environment also improves. It's a double bonus.
toothpikkid - July 12, 2006 06:04 PM (GMT)
i lost my 5 stars too. more realistic though.
nice admin <clap>
maybe like if its below .30 then +.5 happyness and if its below .20 than +1 happyness
vasder30 - July 12, 2006 06:05 PM (GMT)
darn i was on my way to mr. cleanlyness <doh>
oh well nice adition(i know i didn't spell that right)
Lord Alexander - July 12, 2006 06:10 PM (GMT)
Same here, my enviorment went down, but in the long run it will be cool, i just hope it doesn't cause a wave a nuke attacks!
Jhouserok - July 12, 2006 06:11 PM (GMT)
<crying> Well that takes away my 5 stars. However it makes Border walls look that much more appealing. :D Yea for isolationism  :)) :J
But good realism addition Admin, the more variables you can add the more enjoyable the game becomes IMHO.
Vorkosigan - July 12, 2006 06:15 PM (GMT)
For Posterity: Current Global Radiation Level- 1.06
Man, that means 53 nations have been nuked in the past 30 days! <noooo>

I just got hit with a viral infection and an environment penalty. :/ Not a good day for my country.
Greg23 - July 12, 2006 06:16 PM (GMT)
=( 1.06 global radiation =( I lost a star

True. I don't know if my count is accurate, but I see 24 nukes from the WSA war.

Already dislike it. Im trying to get my income as high as possible, and now it's being affected on how war mongering other nations are.
Z'ha'dum - July 12, 2006 06:23 PM (GMT)
That is simply part of living in a world with others in it.

Try to think of it as a uniting force against rogues.

Love to see new stuff added all the time. Thank you for your work Mr. Admin.
Monkey with a Gun - July 12, 2006 06:27 PM (GMT)
Hmmm....now the world needs to figure out how to keep people from using nukes...

Curses... foiled by the Rogue Rogue again!
Awesome, love the new addition... :J
Chris_Kaos - July 12, 2006 06:32 PM (GMT)
Interesting addition, Admin, although I personally think that it should be affected by your nation's location.
It would be SOMETHING to use that location for.
In real life, you aren't necessarily affected by nuclear explosions on the other side of the planet.
PingPongPay - July 12, 2006 06:32 PM (GMT)
Nice addition. The environment hit shouldn't be too devestating (unless everyone goes crazy) and it adds realism. :J
However, I don't think CN will be seeing that +1 happiness bonus anytime soon. 10 nukes or less per month is probably going to be extremely (if not next to impossible) to reach, especially with rogues.

Maybe a nuclear council? Nations would apply to have permission from the council to use a nuke. If the council deems nuclear use appropriate then they could go ahead and use it. However, with rogues, such a council probably wouldn't work, and many people probably wouldn't even listen.
edit: spelling. Spelled nukes "nues".

Sure you are. If 40 some nukes went off in asia right now, the whole world would be affected at the radiation got swept up in the crosswinds

Ragashingo - July 12, 2006 06:35 PM (GMT)
With the number of nukes around its extremely unlikely that 10 won't be fired off in 30 days. This seems a bit overly harsh, maybe it should be like 40 - 50 nukes which would represent a real war instead of 10 which represents what passes for peace around here...
Hannibal1 - July 12, 2006 06:40 PM (GMT)
I lost half a star... I'm not perfect environment anymore. :(
At least i know others are suffering too... ROFLMAO

Ragashingo is right. In a major nuclear war, anywhere from 25 to 50 could go off, and that's not even coming close to exhauting our resources.
I would guess that 15-25 nukes this month were rogue attacks. That is to say, non aligned.
GREATBAY - July 12, 2006 06:41 PM (GMT)
I lost a dollar a day for each citizen in tax,5k less a day,I would see this as a permanent event...feel sorry for new nations have to pay so long for something they will probably never obtain.I wouldn't wait for too many hurrah's on this one.

And alliances which use nukes in retaliation against them.
Letum - July 12, 2006 06:42 PM (GMT)
Make it 1% instead of 2%....it is way too punishing as is...
hubbird - July 12, 2006 06:44 PM (GMT)
What about a global cap and trade system -- i.e. all nations agree to limit the global radiation level to .2, which means no more than 10 nukes per month. These could be doled out to the major alliances, or we could have a monthly inter-alliance auction of nuclear credits with the proceeds going to an inter-alliance aid fund to provide the resources to deal with rogues by using conventional weaponry rather than nuking them.
As to curbing rogue use of nukes -- what about giving them the option to sign a non-proliferation agreement as an individual nation?
Eager to hear others' thoughts.
Chris_Kaos - July 12, 2006 06:45 PM (GMT)
Also, it seems that if you have been attacked with a nuclear weapon, it severly affects your happiness for a long time. Longer than before.

Rich333 - July 12, 2006 06:47 PM (GMT)
This "improvement" sucks so long as the suggestion that it be based on the amount of total land in CN is not implemented along with it. The more land there is, the less effect radiation should have. The global radiation level is only going to continue rising, as the number of nations, and thus the number of nuclear-capable nations, increases.
I think the nation of the individual who came up with this idea should be knocked down to zero infra, along with anyone who has used a nuke in the past month.

Quite true. People will love setting off nukes so the whole CN will suffer. Then the rouges will leave CN. <sadno>
