Sara sat back, stretching herself out. She had been going back over the evidence from an older case. It had galled her to think that this one had eluded prison. She was sure they had enough to convict him, but the DA told them otherwise. He was free, free to continue to commit his crimes.
There was nothing new showing up, nothing they had missed. She resealed the evidence bags with seal tape, put her initials, date and time on it before taking it back to the evidence locker. She sighed and shook her head, hoping that tis guy would make another mistake and then they could put him where he belonged, behind bars.
Nick Stokes was walking by the Trace Lab when he noticed someone was working in it. He decided to peak his head in and say hello. He saw Sara Sidle putting an Evidence Bag back into the Evidence Locker. He didn't know about any case's they were currently working on and he scooted in beside her.
"Going over Evidence?" He asked, just stating the painfully obvious for something to say in the quiet, emptiness of the Trace Lab. She seemed to be a bit stressed, but the shifts and cases made stress inevitable.

Sara had been deep in thought, jumping guiltily as she returned to present time. "Nick, what brings you this way?" she asked, smiling at him.
She looked at the evidence box, sighing deeply, "you know, I hate it when the guy we catch is guilty, but we can't make the case because of a loophole in the law" she replied, walking over and placing the box on the shelf.
"Hey," Nick grinned hoping he sounded and looked reassuring. "We'll catch the guy. We always do. Justice always wins in the end." He understood exactly how Sara was feeling.
"Don't beat yourself up over it either. The killer will make a mistake, and then we will have him for sure, no matter what. They always do," he tried to reassure her.

Sara nodded her head in understanding, "I know Nick, but it still doens't make me feel better. I worked so hard on this case, made sure I had all the evidence. Ask Cath, she'll tell you too. We had the guy, but a loop hole in the law let him through" she said with feeling.
Nick thought for a long moment. "Could I help? I know it wasn't my case but maybe fresh eyes could help," he suggested. "The case is never closed until we catch the guy," he gave another grin. He did not wait for a reply before he opened the evidence drawer. "Any details I should know?"

Sara smiled, "here" she said, handing the case file, "everything you need to know is there" she smiled at him. "I've been over it all with a fine comb and I can't see how they found a loop hole at all" she continued, shrugging her shoulders.
Nick began looking over the report, pausing every few moments to memorize something of importance, or to think about it. "I don't see any loop either...." He announced when he was finished. Nick looked up, all seriousnous now. "Did they tell you what the loop was or why they let him go?"

Sara considered Nick's question for a few minutes before replying "no nothing. Personally, I think the Judge was in on it" she said, smiling, "the more I think about it, the more I that makes sense" she replied.
"You know who the judge is? Or was?" Nick asked another question. "Sounds fishy to me," he spoke casually, but inside his feelings were churning. He hated suspecting judge's and other cops. Especially if they were not involved. But if they were, it was still satisfying to put a badcop or judge away...

Sara pursed her lips "not really, he was a circuit judge" she replied, racking her brain for any other reason he would let the killer off.
"Well the Right Honourable James Murphy was the presiding judge, so I guess we could start by doing some background checking on him" she smiled, feeling a little brighter in herself.
"He probably won't seem so hororable when we are done with him," Nick shrugged. He went over to the trace computer and booted it up. "See if this system has any information on him," he announced half to himself, half to Sara. "Then we could try and find out something about that Circuit Judge."

Sara smiled and started to relax more, "I feel better about this now I have someone else working it with me" she said softly, sitting next to Nick and waiting to see what the computer found for them.
Nick logged into the name database, and typed in James Murphy in the key box. Clicking enter the computer replied with more than 30 hits. "I know James Murphy is a common name, but this is riduculous," Nick grinned trying to joke around again.

Sara smiled, "yeah I know, but there has to be someway to narrow it down" she commented, looking at the names and sighing deeply.
"I think I need to take a break from this for a few Nick" she said, rubbing her eyes, "you wanna grab a coffee with me too and then come back to this?" she asked, shaking her head. "I know what Cath would say if she was here, let it go for now Sara, we'll catch him next time" she smiled softly as she spoke.
